i just recently pulled both my back wheels off, now i have noticed one of the tyres has a egg in it, very noticeable. now in the second tyre there is another 2, not that noticeable but if you run your hand along it, you can feel it. there in the sidewall btw. would these be dodgy tyres, im going to ring up the tyre place where i got them from tomorrow but i just want to get some opinions before i do. i got them end of Nov. so 5 months i have had them. i havent checked the fronts as of yet tho. whats your thoughts, thanks

i had this happen in my last car and the tyres were only 6 months old.
it was actually becuase i hit an big pot hole in the road at 100km/h.
i had tyre insurance which was $23 total when i got the tyres and they replaced them with brand new tyres at a cost to me of $19 which was because of the wear on the tyres.
just ask them first off and see what they say.

I've also had an egg after hitting a massive pothole. The tyre guy said the low profile tyres were a lot easier to egg. Had to get a new tyre and that one was also only about 7 months old :bawl:

so theres really no point in ringing them? as ill just have to buy new tyres anyway? the tyres are austyre. didnt seem like a bad tyre, until now, lol. i sure hope the fronts arnt like that.

I belive it is called a impact fracture. Most tyres insurance will not pay. It is aparently quite dangerous and should be replaced as it may cause the tyre to blowout instead of just getting a puncture. Happens to good quality tyres too as I had it happen on mine. I did not hit anything either other than the normal potholes etc but they are low profile tyres. Also had one occur on my old 4x4 tyres but propberbly had a reason due to bumps

i understand that i should change them, thats why there not on the car anymore, i have my old 18" on the back, i might check the front two later on tonight, wouldnt want a blowout

Impact fracture is the correct term for this. What occurs is the belts in the sidewall break(fracture) causing the sidewall to loose its shape. If you continue to drive on a tyre with an impact fracture eventually the tyre will blow out.

If i'm not mistaken you'll only see an egg on the inside of the trye which means you have to remove the tyre off the rim to see it?
How often should we with low profile tyres check for this?

Hey buddy,
had this happen to me as well - tyre guy called it 'tyre separation'. Anyhow, if they're only 5 months old, they should have some sort of warranty (be it that they are less than 12 months old). So if the tread is still in really good shape, ie not worn because of burnouts etc, then I would be going and seeing them and getting them to replace them with new ones and claim your existing tyres as 'faulty'. It's rediculous to put up with this at only 5 months new !!

Unfortunately there will be no warranty claim because the manufacturer will deem it to be your fault for hitting the pot hole too fast and not taking due care.Tyre seperation usually refers to the tread lifting away from the belts.

i just bought two new tyres, i asked the guys at the place where i got them what i should do and they said the same thing, caused by potholes most likely and theres no point in trying to get warranty out of them. they were 225 sized so now i have 245, so its kind of a win for me cause i wanted bigger, lol.

the "egg" in this case is on the outside of the tyre. I don't know of anyone that would pull a tyre off a rim just to check if the tyre is ok on the inside, at least not without some weirdness occuring which can't be otherwise explained

Why would the egg bulge in when the tyre is pressurised?

I had eggs (sidewall fractures) in every set of nankang NS2's I put on.

Any tyre that has these "eggs" in the sidewall would be considered as "dangerous" and should not be driven on at any speed. It usually occurs after hitting a pothole and is caused by the pinching of the sidewall during impact. This pinching damages the belts in the sidewall and allow air to bleed out into the outer bladder. So the tyre ends up with a weak spot.
I would certainly be checking any rim that has hit a pothole hard enough to damage a tyre this badly, as it will more than likely be buckled.
Low profile tyres can be deflated without the driver being aware of it
and this will shorten their life very quickly if driven on for ANY distance..

when my tyre egged it was the dealer that replaced it under warranty. but please not that i paid an extra $20 odd on top of the cost of the tyres which covered punctures and side wall damage.
i know its too late now because you have replaced the tyres but you can pm me if you want to know the shop where i got my tyres.
ps. my old tyres that egged were 235 45 R17 and the egg was caused by hitting a large pot hole at 100km/h

Mitchi pilot sport this happened to me too. I found a set on ebay for about that much to replace them. They are a kinda stange shape tyre wall on them compared to other tyres. I think they have a rim protector arrangement with some extra rubber but this make the side wall seem smaller than it really is. They grip nice though.

I argued with holden for a couple of weeks. I couldn`t under stand why they would put these tires on a ute. It is a comercial vehicle:soap:
