we just got back from hong kong after 3 weeks around Asia
way is it all the drivers over there from double Decker buses to limo drivers, drive like this
they pull up to the lights put it in N (auto) lights go red put it in drive and push the throttle to floor get up to speed take foot of the throttle and put the brake on then back on floor with the throttle then on the brake this goes on from the time they start of to the time they stop even on the open road for a 2 hour drive at a 110 speed limit in a merc limo
they must use more fuel and go through more diffs and tailshaft uni joints then the rest of the world put together I'm told the indians drive the same way it is very uncomfortable to get in a vehicle over there especially cabs and buses

I'd say because they have only had cars for like 10 years, and are used to driving mopeds. !

I currently live in HK.

I asked a taxi driver why they drive this way, believe it or not, he said to save fuel.

Go figure............

same in Taiwan, being driven around Taipei accelerator - brake - accelerator - slow 10kph - accelerator - up to speed - slow down - accelerate back to limit....... I wanted to neck myself :lmao:

Maybe it's one of those old wives' tales that people had adopted cos everyone else does it. They need Mythbusters... or at least someone to point out that using the brakes a lot is very wasteful of energy.

I've seen the study where accelerating to the speed limit briskly, then coasting, saves more fuel than slowly accelerating to the limit.

However using the brakes is rediculous

I read much of the same thing in a few places about modern fuel injected cars that they use more fuel accelerating through the rev range slowly rather then getting to the peak shift point quicker to change gears to lower the revs back down.

Not just Asian drivers mate! I see plenty of local non Asian drivers do this as well. Simple inability to modulate the throttle. That takes some skill which a lot of us take for granted. Good old "stab and steer" method for driving LOL!

You should have punched her in the face for that.

actually the truth is a lot of them are amateur race drivers and really don't care about anyone's comfort, they just wanna get from A to B as quick as possible. It's not un common to find them playing Daytona in local arcades in their spare time.

WOW that is an unexpected answer
i would say what they save on fuel thay would spend on drive line parts and brake reapers
how about the cabs in Kowloon and hong kong every one a Toyota crown look like a 70 model

Funny because the ones over here just drive 20km/h below the speed limit in the overtaking lane. The closer you get to them to indicate your frustration causes them to slow down even further.

If I could summarise the driving style in one word it would be - 'Oblivious'.

Sometimes I seriously wish I still had my 80 series Landcruiser with alloy bullbar :vpo:.....not that I am an agressive driver:evil:

yea i also noticed this i was in hk for 8 nights a month ago, i thought it might have had something to do with traffic congestion if everyone putted off the line and drove like grandmas it would clog the streets up, def need mythbusters for this one...

and i love the toyota comfort cabs with the lever to open the lh/r doors haha, and the constant putting in neutral when stopped was a bit weird.. suprised me how i didnt see a single accident the whole time i was there, they drive like lunatics just pull out in front and cut ppl off.. crazy town!

Reading your post was an agonising experience, to say the least. I thought Australia had a 100% literacy rate? :flip2::rofl:

In all seriousness, from what I've seen, the drivers in Hong Kong are pretty decent and actually have some lane etiquette. Maybe the OP was always stuck in traffic, which explains the constant accelerator/brake modulation.

Drivers can throttle pump as hard as they like. I just wish they (wherever THEY come from) would sod off out of the right lane if they want to drive at 10 km/h under the limit. You know you're in trouble when the mobile road block is some sort of commercial van or a Camry.

Why do these dumb bums drive slowly in the right lane? Perhaps it gives them a 500m gap in front because everybody else in the right lane is driving at the speed limit? This gap lets them focus on other important issues . . . like mobile phone calls or texting?

You walk up to a slab of wood in a wall. It has hinges on one side. It's a DOOR! There's a protuberance half way up the slab. It's the DOOR KNOB. Thank goodness for stereotypes!

Way? Try why. And there are no K's in nothing. Bring on the school ratings Kevin and Julia. ;-)

yeah i wish i had an old car sometimes, to just push the wankers off the road :evil:, then i calm down and pass them, usually in the left lane.

My wife believes that they just don't have the driving gene.

ye mate i agree

they seem to walk the same way they drive. they cut you off when you are about to walk around them and form a wide hurdle while walking slowly so you can't walk past them at shopping centres even though they should be able to see you trying to get through. :bawl::vpo:

White Rider

sounds like they don't want to leave gaps with the car in front or they'll get 10 cars trying to merge into the space.

I've noticed that too. They tend to zig zag across the footpath just like they drive on the road. It must be genetic.

I rember a few weeks ago on the southeastern a taxi driver (newly minted usual melbourne type) only had two modes accelation & brake. Guess never knew about the tihird - coast cruzing mode, must be costing the taxi's owner a fotune in wear & tear plus gas!

Rember reading Peter Werret's book, he had the worst similar experiance like above - being driven by a GM USA executive!

Should make it part of the license test (drivabilty of the driver)

The other I've witnessed is sudden lift off and reapplication while in OD, the car is not going to shift up?

Strange what one sees on the road these days.......

My wife's reply is that some women do but it must be a recessive gene as most don't. :)

Hahaha.. I used to live there.. Cause the bus drivers are maniacs over there.. I kid you not.. They pedal to the metal all the way even when there's steep slopes. They scare the crap out of tourists who sit up the top level at the front.. lol.. That was 18 years ago.. Good to see nothing changed there..

i drive, from the suburbs, to the outer city, and back, every day.
i would say, 85% of the dumb/wierd/wtf kinda driving i see, is from the above mentioned.

i watched in amusement as one started slowly coming out of a side street, then to realise she was heading towards oncoming traffic.

truly clueless some of 'them'

i even give the really bad drivers nicknames to amuse myself on the long journeys. once there was the MadMerger, who had absolutely no sense of distance. constantly merged in front of people with, i swear, less than a 30cm gap. older lady, had no clue what she was doing wrong. very dangerous at freeway speeds.

The simple answer is they drive with both feet in an auto. Damn frustrating as a passenger as there is no pause between accl and decel. Driving along just fine then bam hard on the brakes.

Good skillz if they do :goodjob: Braking with my left foot has taken a while to not over brake. It takes a bit of practice to develop the fine motor control :smilesandbanana:

A South Korean woman who finally passed her driving test after 960 tries is ready to buy a car and get behind the wheel.

The Yonhap news agency reported that 69-year-old Cha Sa-soon passed the driving part of the test last month.

South Korea requires a written test first, and Cha took it nearly daily since April 2005 before passing last year.

Yonhap quoted her as saying she wanted to buy a small secondhand car to visit her son and daughter and for her business selling vegetables.
