Can anyone tell me what grade to use it has 150,000km on the clock and have some bolt on mods exhaust.headers,OTR Z-grip ect..

From memory 6L it good. More is apparently better in the LS1

Do a search on the grade of oil but the books say 10w/30 or 10w/40

before everyone comes in telling you to do a search. The consensus is.

Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60
about $60.00 for 5L

overfill by .5l if you are doing any circuit work.

I believe the oil refill capacity is about 6.3L including oil filter

I think that 6.3l is going a bit steep. 5l +0.5l should see you right.

Castrol Lube Guide states: Service Refill Capacity: 5.0-6.2L including oil filter

I've been putting in about 6.3L with oil filter in my VYII SS since i've owned it every 5000km without any issues

Holden and the latest workshop I am using which specialise in a lot of LS1's have always put 6 litres in mine from new. If left to settle overnight it shows a slight overfill, if checked after stopping for a minute or so it shows pretty much on the full line.

Sump capacity changed over the years. Not entirely sure about VY+. But I know VT VX is almost bang on 5L. I don't even look when doing my own. Throw a whole bottle of 10w60 in and walk away.

Thanks for all the input guys i was think about 10w 40w but its quite hard to find in the full synthetics. Castrol edge 10w 60w i have been told is good but in the winter months a lower viscosity should be used .Is this correct??

Would 5w 30 be pushing it considering the kms i have because its quite cheap in the Castrol edge at the moment.

What oil type has been used in the car to date ???? Not always a good idea to change.
5/30 is a little on the light side (unless you live in the Arctic Circle). I've used Mobil Semi/Syn 10/40 and found it quite good - but you need to change it every 5,000 k's. A full synthetic oil would enable you push the change interval out to 10,000 k's.
A lot of guys use & recommend the Castrol Edge 10/60. I would use it if I was running a forced motor (supercharged/turbo) as you need the additional film strength it provides. In my opinion, it's a bit of overkill on an (internally) unmodded engine.
There are plenty of oil threads to read if you have a day or two to spare.....

My VY Series II is 6 litres. Whatever happens, 5L is more than likely not going to be enough. Just pour 5L in and then check the dipstick...simple.

Well mine uses around 9.7L, but has an external cooler.

Keep an eye out for specials... I picked up 35L of Castrol Sport Edge 10W60 for $50/5L recently. They also had 15w40 for the same price...

Its also probably worth looking at a decent filter, it amazes me how many people run stock filters on modified/high performance engines.

I use pureone oil filters... Basically they are a heap better than stock (catch a LOT smaller fragments) and not "THAT" expensive. IIRC they are about $13-15 each, compared to $5-7. Still, considering most members here spend a shit load on their car, its hardly going to break the bank.

I ordered in 10 last time, so ive got them in stock for a few changes (Im running dual filters, so should get me 5 changes).

On top of that, it might be worth looking at a filtermag. Basically its a magnet that attaches to your filter, and helps catch metal fragments.

They must have changed the spec for VY, the Holden VX owners book says 5.0 inc oil filter for a VX LS1. I recently changed mine and 5 litres seemed right. Did the sump change from VX to VY or did Holden just up the recommendation.

from what i heard they never changed the sump but the dip stick was changed from VX to VY.

This is correct. My manual says 5L(VT) but holden revised the dipsticks in the later models to read full at 5.5L. I always put the extra .5L in mine.

From an ex- 10W60 edge user in my last car an LS1.
You were trying to find a 10W40 full synthetic??
I'm going to toss this snake oil seller into the mix
Nulon 10W40 Synthetic (gold bottle) around 50-60 clams for 6 ltr
I did run edge in the taxi but tried the snake oil brand on advice of the main XR6T forum after royal purple etc, and in the ford anyway the turbo spin-down is dramatically quieter and longer on the Nulon than the castrol, it stays cleaner longer and is recommended weight for our cars
I have had no issue with it or it's quality.

Can anyone tell me if 5.0L is correct for the VX LS1 and would 10w-60 be good for an ls1 that has done almost 200,000kms?
Thankyou.

Don't forget if you are changing your oil filter that you will need more oil.

Just had a quick look at the VT --> VY workshop manual that I found online and it says.

Oil Capacity: Gen III -5.7 V8
w/o Oil Filter 4.7Lt
w/ Oil Filter 5.0Lt
Also if you are changing the Filter
a)Pour some clean engine oil into the filter, until level is approximately 2 cms below top of filter.
b) Smear some engine oil over the filter seal
c) Screw the filter into place until the seal contacts mating surface of adaptor. then tighten through a futher 2/3 of a turn.

Hope this helps.

Maybe just fill it to the correct level on the dipstick , crazy idea I know but I did read somewhere that's what there for.

Or as i have seen a couple of people do , fill it through the dipstick tube till it overflows and then drive it.

It's amazing how much extra oil you can put in and they still run ok.

Thankyou.I used to own a VX before my VY and 5L wasn't enough.
I can't remember exactly to be perfectly honest but it was either 5.5 or 6L that I needed. 10w60 (I presume castrol edge or mainlube) is widely used by people on here so I'm sure it would work in yours.

When ever I have had my VX SS serviced by Holden or lately the local LS1 workshop, they have always put 6 litres in the VX, been doing that for the past 9 years. A quick check on the dipstick after a minute or so shows full, but a sit overnight in the garage the level is above full and just into the first bump or ripple on the dipstick. I was interested to see what the local workshop who do heaps of LS1's would put in it when they did my first service with them, on checking the next morning it was exactly to the point Holden had been filling to, just into the first bump on the dipstick and the invoice had charged for 6 litres of oil.

From the HSV -vt 11 handbook. For optimum fuel economy, use 10/30 SJ GF2 engine oil.If this oil is unavailable use SG,SH or SJ grade engine oil. with viscosity of 20W/50 or 15W/40. (HSV) recommends Mobil 1 for the LS1 v8 engine). Service capacity. 5 litres approx (incl. filter)

That was written over 10 years ago. As said above, the dipstick was revised from VX so it took 5.5l+ to reach full. There are also SM grade oils out now(Edge for one) with much better qualities than the old grades.
Just because it's in the service manual it doesn't necessarily mean it's the best for the engine.
