Who has there car signed off by a engineer?
I believe any mod you do should technically be signed off by a engineer?
For those that have, are they expensive? what sort of stuff will a engineer sign off on?
Cheers

I'm going through the process now - It's not easy. Mostly because suppiers can be very un-cooperative with the necessary information. There are a lot of suppliers who claim their products are ADR approved but as soon as you ask them to put it in writing, they get personally offended and don't want to know about it! Most suppliers also don't understand the requirements for engineer certification, which is a shame really as they could sell a lot more product by doing their homework and understanding the applicable laws.
Costs around $800.

I got mine engineered for turbos, cam, and exhaust. cost me around $200. But had to get emmisions test (free), and a drive by and stationary noise test ($100) before he would sign of on it.

What is the set up of your car? I would have thought a car with cam and exhaust, let alone turbo would fail a emissions test?

Mine actually passed fairly easily. During test there is no full throttle testing, and with my turbos been fairly large they saw virtually no boost. Bloke at test centre said quite a few cammed and turbo cars have passed..:)

turbos make it easier to pass emissions

Ive been told the opposite that superchargers are, i always thought turbos were easier though. Apparently where you can sit the cats make it easier?

I was referring to turbo to a cammed N/A car

thanks for clearing that up, my mistake, its been a long day :)

One thing that I think most people tend to overlook with modifying their car and hoping to get it engineered is that its not so much the turbo or supercharger, etc itself thats considered illegal. It's moreso the stupid sh*t thats done in the attempt to fit certain bits and pieces that is generally frowned upon.. I'm referring to simple things such as hacking up strut towers and reo bars for massive intercoolers and piping, unboxed and oiled pod filters, poorly setup fuel and exhaust systems, etc..

I just want the basics done

OTR
i have changed to a fast manifold, and converted to a T56... so nothing to crazy

Which engineer did you use ? playschool engineers ? there isnt a engineer in this country that will charge $200 to enginneer a car, somethings not right there,i would re check the paperwork.

Had my Torana engineered long ago for the big block and it was over $2000, many friends doing LS engines in Toranas and the engineers are starting at $1500+.

most engineers certs start at 800 depending how far you have to go.
and yes the closer the cats are to the manifolds the easier it will be too pass emissions due to the cats heating up quicker on cold starts

I drove from Canberra to Sydney to have John do my car also. Cost me about $1000, that was blower, cooler, pipes and wheels.
He was really good during the install of the cooler. We sent him pics as we did it and he came back to us with what he wanted. He was never to busy when we were ringing him and throwing questions at him. Real top guy.

BTW, what do you mean by "cooler"? Intercooler, oil cooler, transmission cooler..... ?

Paperwork all fine, and accepted by the rta !! If you do your homework there is quite a few that dont charge an arm and a leg. If it was dodgy the rta and or blue slip inspector would have picked it up. Also due to a stuff up with rta paperwork, a rta inspector also went over car !!!!

I would agree with that i had my car engineered after relocating my abs unit that included brake testing on an airstrip and that set me back $900

The first few I rang were up around the 1k mark, and they also still needed same tests as the one I ended up using, ie noise, drive by noise, and emm tests, and weighbridge ticket. One joker wanted 3k for one, and he said he would do all tests in house (bar emms test).
By shopping around a bit, the whole deal from start to finish, incl blue slip was well under $500 !!!!!! Including a detailed report with photos , e.t.c. And ive been pulled over since and cop said it was all spot on !!!!:):):):):)

Using the same engineer as vy2ttr nice guy and reasonably priced...... Think he was $300 for me but i am including extras.... And he is by no means a "Playschool Engineer" Very nice assumption from a bloke staring at a blue screen. Some Engineers think the whole process is a licence to print money..

hi,all sounds good but what if car doesn,t pass emissions test? noise setup etc should be ok. are you expected to return at some time to be retested for emissions ??? thinking turbo cammed 408 stroker even without the turbo working during test might struggle??? dont want to have to change things to past tests if its not the same as is now!

vyttr,
I dont know you or ever seen you, dont take it personally, but if you really beleive that your car is engineered because you paid $200,thats your choice, the rta is not a engineer shop neither is the blueslip guy, they all go off what the playschool engineer wrote on the report ,its bit like buying a car, then returning for warranty to the dealership & you find out its no longer there :)

No offence taken sonny, and we have met, we had a chat about this very thing at a skid pan day not to long ago. And every engineer I spoke to wanted to see and check the exact same thing as my "playschool" man did. He even wanted photos and details from when I built it. And believe me he checked quite a few things.
At the end of the day we only need the bit of paper for rego and insurance reasons, and to keep the cops happy. And why pay more than you have too.:) I could understand a higher price for major mods, i.e custom hot rods, or major brake, susp work. Or major body mods. Not for a simple cam or turbo fit-up. Its not rocket science.:):)
Also worth noting that the blue slip guy in this case was in fact also a engineer !!!

Wow, that does sound super cheap, just goes to show it pays to shop around.
I would agree with a lot of posters though, most Engineers do charge more. I paid just under $1500 for a 350 Chev into an LX Torana with a Top loader and 9 inch which required brakes and suspension. I did add a cage and drop tank near the end of the build and that added a little more to his time and was reflected in the cost. Even so at $1500 I got a lot of peace of mind when driving it.

As Sonny said John @ Consulmotive or Peter Gillard.
Pete is in the process of putting my mates Blown HJ (383 w/671 on top of it) through. The only thing it hasn't passed yet is the drive by noise test due to a farkin noisy blower belt... :bawl:
John did my mates convertible turbo 260Z datsun. Now THAT is a weapon of a car....

Agreed. There is a guy that works independently in Newcastle that only charges $300. He has retired since.
I can see engineers charging $800+ for heavy modified cars but just exhaust & suspension etc seems a little steep.

mmmhh, might be some thing to look into!!!!
Just had cam, otr, full exhaust fitted, mafless tune.....very impresive results....(will post dyno results very soon) in appropriate thread.
But would love it to be engineered so its 100% legal :D (as we all would)
Anyone no any in the WA PERTH region????
