Hi Guys,
I lent my SS VYII Ute to a mate on the weekend and it came back with the clutch pedal sitting on the floor...
Not sure how he got it back to my place, cause I cant put it into gear...
I just hope he hasnt f**cked the gearbox!
Anyway, I was told by Holden that it will most probably be the Slave cylinder.
I was told by someone else that the slave is inside the gearbox...
Does this sound right?
If it is, is there an access hatch or something?
Surely you dont need to pull the gearbox out to change it?
Also, while im fixing this problem, should I do look at/fix anything else at the same time?
Cheers Guys,
CoRy

From my limited understanding it is in the bell housing, and yes, the recommended mod is to put a bleed line in (preferably braided).
Others will be able to explain more on how to inspect/replace.

Gearbox has to come out. Bitch of a job. My slave went and it cost me a grand to have it done. Ouch.

anyone..can you buy these from USA GM same slaves it is their gearbox?
anyone looked into that, could be a lot cheaper than GMH markups like a lot of other stuff.
PS doesn't this issue usually happen after getting a flogging like most of the complaints go.

Sounds like there was a bit of "Here hold my Beer & watch this" going on.
Afraid to say that the only way too get to the slave is box out. What a great design eh?
Good luck with it.

So what you are saying is, this isnt really a progressive thing that happens?
This can happen in an instant, from bad driving?
I treat my car pretty well and never really "Flog" it.
Ill get the wheels spinning from time to time and have a race at the lights, but never treat it "like a $5 hooker"...
Im a bit pissed off with him!

Your mate sounds like a bloke that should be known as "a bloke you used to know". I would not associate with someone who has that little respect for your belongings, at the same time though it may have just brought the inevitable to you sooner than later and may have happened anyway :( Put something bulletproof in it as it will be worth every penny, i think the only slave cylinders available for them are holden spec ones?. The VZ ones are recommended i think, but someone correct me if i am wrong, the vy models are the same too are they?
I guess to put a positive light on it is at least its a chance to make it better :)
I thought "That" clutch issue was only on the VE's?

Yes, box out definately and if the clutch is more than half worn replace it while the box is out. Get an external bleed line while yer at it as the clutch needs bleeding regularly to get rid of the black pondscum that accumulates in the reservoir and gives you that shitty pedal.
Your scorecard should read $$$$$ - $1000 : Mates -1
An even better thought would be to front him about it and convince him that he brought the problem on with his western suburbs driving style.... If he's any sorta mate he may kick the can for a few bucks. If not then he'll have to go elsewhere in future for the loan of a ute and the occasional beer with a mate :goodjob:

how many kms is has the car got?
I doubt it was any fault of the driver
its a common thing for the slave to go ive seen them go in as little as
80 000km
id say it has just worn out
but unfortunately its a box out job
its not a hard job should take around 3 hrs and you would be looking at around $250 for the slave

Thanks for all the replies guys!
I rang around yesterday to find out a bit more info on what has to happen.
Sounds like it will be about a $2000 job with a new clutch.
Clutch kit - $840
Fly Wheel - $455
Slave - $200
Labour - $450
Looks like the car will have to sit for a while until I can put some funds together to fix it.
Can anyone recommend a place to do the work in or around Brisbane, QLD?
I have called 'Direct Clutch' and 'Power Torque' so far.
The car has done about 150,000kms.
So it sounds like it was bound to happen some time soon...
Just unlucky that it happened while someone else had it, I guess...
Thanks again!

You should look at getting Tex Z-Grip installed instead of the stock replacement clutch

i have had a slave cylinder go while i was driving my car, i gave it a flogging tho, changed from 1st to 2nd. thats why it went, im pretty sure if it was just normal driving it would have been fine, but from jumping on the clutch pedal to smash another gear the fluid is getting forced into the slave causing it to blow out at the weakest wore part, thats my understanding of it

the 'spirited' driving that my ute constantly gets still hasnt killed a slave. Could of happened to anyone driving it imo, its not too common to hear them give up.
OP - if you and a mate have a spare few hours it can be done yourselves. Ive done mine in my garage with the ute sitting on axle stands. Box out clutch change and back in around 3hrs. Still though Id set a day aside if doing it for the 1st time.
Last I saw Tex were selling the slaves for $99 (check their site that could be US$).

Try the Extreme organic clutch mate cheaper than your prices there I got a complete ket under a grand and clutch is still holding up with the stroker.
cheers

Check under your rear wheel arch for some rubber.
Sounds like your mate has been flogging it.

i think the km on the car will result in your mate getting the benefit of the doubt. It was likely just hanging on by a thread.
I had a mate who used to borrow peoples cars and something would always go when he was driving. Things that you couldnt point blame at him but nevertheless always happened to him.
I dont let my car just like id never lend my wife.

Plenty of finger pointing at your mate. Fair chance it's not warranted though. If he's a mate you should have a fair idea of how he treats things mechanical. If you know he flogs stuff, well, you shouldn't let him drive it, but if he treats things with respect, it's unlikely to be anything he did.
Reminds me of the classic industry scenario of a car coming in for a blown brake light globe, but 5 kms after picking it up the motor blows up.
Must have been caused by the guy who popped the boot open to replace the blown globe, so he should pay for it, because it wasn't blown before it went in...
