Hi all. Have a 04/05 175kw alloytec VZ manual Ute that developed a whine, like a blower or something. (Shame it’s not a blower) It is getting worse & started around 100,000km. The dealer said he thought it was the power steering pump but I don’t agree. The only way to find that out is drop the belt. Hoping someone may have had the same fault. Now at 132km the noise is getting louder. When cold, real loud but that may be because it has no oil in it (As covered in forum, “Alloytec Oil Consumption”) but adding oil does not help. Possibly because I have driven it so often with the oil level off the dip stick may not have helped, but it whines real bad. Any info would be great.

Ive driven about 200 VZ crewmans (ex cop divi vans) and they all have it and most of them are only 60-100,000kms old, Im pretty confident its the engine balance shaft bearings. Yours being run low on oil all of the time wouldnt have helped it. Even if you know and hate the fact that it uses oil i ask you why you let it run low? How hard is it to put oil in.

Thanks for that. While you are totally correct, i.e. how hard is it to put oil in it, I do have a reason why this kept happening. Under warranty this Ute would drink oil, so I done the obvious, topped it up when low. BUT, when I would have time to take it back to the Dealer I would say that this thing has an oil drinking fault & I had to add 2 litres, or whatever. The Dealer would then tell me that they cannot count that added oil as proof, because they did not add it. I said at the time that I don’t have the time to always come in & have them top up the oil, I have a job to do. Their reply was, “Its ok, these engines hold about 6 Lts of oil, so it can run quite low”. At the time I could not believe my ears, but they are the dealers, so what would I know. So that’s why it had some very low levels at times. To be honest, I was hoping it would run a bearing or similar under warranty. But it didn’t & after the dealer so called “lost” each of the four oil consumption tests, it was out of warranty. Since then I do keep the oil level ok (with-in reason) but I almost wish to would just die. Then I could say what a piece of shit this motor was. Note: I have been I Holden owner for 25 years & this Ute has put me right off, not because its Holden but because the Dealer where I live is so shit & the engine has a fault that Holden does not want to know about.

To rule out power steering pump, turn steering wheel on full lock with some accel while engine running. If it whine mainly comes from turning steering then its your pump

Sorry to hear, sounds like the dealer has given you a very cold shoulder. Anything to get out of paying for things under warranty.

I bet if you went there now with the car out of warranty they would tell you the engine needs a rebuild as it shouldnt be using oil.

Are you sure the 60 degree V6 Alloytec runs balance shafts???

My SV6 gets this whine in it every time a V8 drives by in traffic. It goes something like this:
"Bugger, I wish I'd bought the V8 instead, next one will definitely be an 8, why do they have to rub it in, DAMMIT."

But seriously, we have 3 VZs at my house, the 2 with 175 motors both have a bit of whine in them, one worse than the other, but my SV6 has no whine at all, just a bit of rattle.
