Has anyone got any clues on how to quiten down engine & outside noises down a bit, I have seen dynomat advertized but sounds like it is more for better quality sound of music, I am looking for sound dampener material if there is any out there.
thanks

Yeah any of that dynomat stuff works well for blocking out sound they have a specific foam stuff that goes under the carpet or you could just rip the carpet up and stick the normal stuff under their and cover it up it defineatley does cut noise from the outside out.

i would start with a paint on deadener in the wheel arches, see how much that helps and then go from there. At least u dont have to rip the car apart to do it!

I am looking at this stuff but not sure how effective it really is?

We did up my brothers car, and spent time to get it quite inside. We made a huge difference; but didn't actually measure the db before and after.

First thing we did was try and pay attention to work out the key sources of noise. Go for a drive over a few road surfaces and listen for the noise sources. Do the road test before/after each mod.

Wheel arches are the first point we looked at too; after the paint on sound deadener we could notice a good difference.

The next area we agree upon was noise from the boot area coming forward into the cab. Even a thick old blanket can help. We used the paint on sound deadener on the boot floor, boot walls and in the tyre well; and also carpeted the tyre well. We then replaced the boot carpet with a thicker grade (his original was a very thin carpet and in poor condition). We also added some material sound deadener under the rear shelf.

At this stage we noticed the noise coming from the doors. After a google search we ended up painting the lower inside of the outside skin of the doors with a sound deadener. Although we doubted this, it also helped.

We had read a decent roof lining can help baffle sound to, by preventing reverberation; but we never tried it as we were happy with the noise level we had achieved.

Replacing an under carpet sound deadener with another sound deadener, although hopefully better quality, would be low on my list. Unless you think a lot of noise is being transferred from that area.

Listening to my Commodore, I think I would start with the tyre wells.

Trouble is the dynomat weighs a fair bit and if you start putting it everywhere, you will seriously add a heap of kg's to the weight of the car.

Paint on sound deadner appears to be the way to go.

Thanks a lot guys very helpfull suggestions, I did take it for a drive today and definatly a lot of noise is comming from the tyres, so that will be first on my list, then the boot area next.
Just wondering about that mat stuff under the bonnet, is it a heat proctection for the paint or suppose to be for engine noise as well ? as I would like to quiten down engine noise a bit as well.

thanks again

I stripped the sound deadner out of my doors lol so im not too fussed with the outside noise i just turn the radio up or put the window down.
Any sound deadner no matter what you use will add extra weight the spray on deadner doesnt really compare to the proper stuff as far as reducing noise ive personally put over 25-30kgs of dynamat into cars to reduce noise in the whole of things its not alot of weight if its just a cruiser thats around 8 packs of sound deadner. So would easily cover large areas, i would go with the foam matting thats specifically designed go under carpet if it doesnt work its easier to remove.

Are your tyres OK? Sometimes excessive road noise could be the tyres you are running need replacing or it could be alignment/tracking - get those checked out if its not an expensive first option.

PS: if you have replaced the tyres with low profile, you will also get more "road noise"

Tyres will need replacing in about 12 months time, alignment been done a couple months back, they are just the standard good year ones.

Has anyone achieved any reduction in engine noise ? I was thinking about putting something under the bonnet and on the firewall.

thanks.

You could try the resomat under the carpet against the firewall. Will probably only get you half way up the firewall; but should help a bit.

Going back about 20 years one of my mates painted everything under the bonnet, including the firewall with a heat proof sound deadening paint. If was acutally a really good looking finish; and looked more as a feature than something for sound deadening. I can't remember what the name of the stuff was; but do recall him saying it was expensive; it was for a show car.
