Looking for some new back tyres for my R8 clubby and would prefer to get the potenza's again as they seem to be very good.

Although some guys around here want to charge an arm and a leg for one tyre. (900$)

Where could I find some.... cheaper ones.

Thanks :D

I've been looking for some too as mine are nearly shot :)

I've been looking around and found a few ppl are using Kumho's (ku31 or somethings like that) or maybe sumitomos are "suppose" to be good aswell, I think both brands are about 400$ each from memory...All are 275/35/19's with the right load and speed rating...

Ya dont really wonna go tooo cheap or you'll have no traction at the best of times...

you won't get the 275 for $350 that is the front tyre (245) that was at that price.
Kumhos will work, a little skatey to be honest, Falken FK452 work better, best I found, but a little expensive is the T1r Toyo (around the 500 mark).
I am currently running the Falkens (have used the toyos and kumhos) and they are ok for the money, I would say equivalent to the bridgestone, your choice - your wallet

it is the price we pay for awesome cars :) Alsong as the fronts are good the back are that bad if you down grade in tread :), but you still wont something half decent....

ring arund a see what options are out there, a few different tyre shop get it different import tyres so it seems, what one shop has, another might not.

Shit tyres shouldn't be on ANY car, let alone one with over 300kw!

Agreed "shit tyres shouldnt be on a car" unless its a bucket of shit, BUT there are "cheaper brands" out there that are "just as good" as the "expensive" brands.

Wake up to yourself........... Cheap shit tyre that fails in the sidewall before you get thru the tread. Not to mention the road noise.

I got two rear tyres Kumho KU31 275/30/R20 for $250 each. Fantastic tyres at a 1/4 of the cost of the bridgestone. They're alot softer but the way i see it if i get 15k to 20k on them and replace them they will still only cost me $1000 for 2 sets of rear tyres. thats still cheaper then getting the bridgestones (which your really payin for a name more then anything)

KU31 - i'd recommend them and im sure there are plenty of other people who would too. Great grip, good tyre SENSATIONAL price!

Found the Kumo's to be a good value for money tyre whilst not as good as the Bridgestones there still a good tyre. The comment about 2 bob tyres is true but Kumos arn't 2 bob tyres.

I have 245 Hankook's on the front and 245 Nangkang's on the rear of my car and tbh they are pretty good. I can't tell the difference between them and Bridgestones for grip but the Hankook's are noiser for sure. Both brands are wearing quite well.

I have gone through a lot of tyres over the last 10 years and found the tyre I liked the best was a Hankook silica compound tyre. That included Yokies, Bridgestones,Pirellis,Falkens,Nankangs and Dunlops . Others will no doubt disagree but that has been my experience with performance tyres.

cheers

i just replaced the rear tyres on my WM Grange with HANKOOK VENTUS V12 EVO , very impressed with these, very quiet and very good grip in all conditions, ive have my fair share of nexens and nangkangs etc and imho they are crap in comparison, ive had sidewalls perish and crack, delamination etc, dont be a tight ar$e put something decent on it, shop around for either bridgestone, pirelli, yokohama, dunlops etc, stay away from the cheapies, they are cheap for a reason

I wonder if many people know that the cheap tyres are the same as what bridgestone and the other big companies had a couple of years ago. The bigger companies sell there old tread patterns. if the design was safe 2-3 years ago then they will be safe now.

The moulds are sold off yes, but its the construction within these tyres that are the issue and also the rubber itself. Its generally cheaper rubber and ply's within the tyre that makes them handle and perform poorly.

If anyone is keen I have two, 275/30/20 continental conti-contact-sport 2 tyres, to go to a good home? Done 3000km :)

If you are going to spend 40,000 plus on a car it is not hard to stretch a few hundred for decent rubber.
Contis, dunlops, michelins, bridgestones are the brands I would stick with, but bridgestones are easily the most pricey.

I havent heard anyone (in any of the tyre threads) meantion the Yokohama Advan Sport's.

From what i can gather, they are a good tyre... and pricing (from the only shop i've asked so far) is around the $600 mark for 275/35 19.

http://www.yokohama.com.au/ourtyres/tyre.aspx?tyreid=58

Manufacturers including Bentley, Porsche and Audi, and tuning houses including Mercedes AMG and Gemballa are using the ADVAN Sport road tyre for its premium quality, performance and comfort level

explain then the sidewall failures, poor grip and much noiser. ive said it once and ill say it again, you only get what you pay for, and there is a reason why they are cheap. the only thing the cheap tyres seem to do is last a long time tread wise on normal driving if the sidewalls last. if you go thru tyres from doing burnouts etc then you would just put the cheapies on, but thats about all they are good for

In response to the original question, consider importing them directly yourself from the USA or Europe. Start with TireRack and see how you go from there.

My $0.02 on the issue of changing brands is based on my experience after 10,000k's on Pirelli P-Zero's:

Excellent ride quality
Very Quiet
Fair price
Poor wet weather traction
Not capable of dealing with the lateral loads of an 1800+Kg car

Don't subscribe to the theory of 'cheapies on the back are OK' - they aren't unless you are happy with the potential outcome of the car that wants to swap ends every time you turn a corner in the wet.

There are no doubt other tyres out there that are capable replacements for the Bridgestones, but the problem is you may have to try a few sets before you find them unless you can get a definitive answer from someone who has actual experience to learn from, under the conditions you expect to use them.

In terms of grip, at the track, the Pirelli's on my GTS are useless. On the road, they are acceptable in the dry and unacceptable in the wet. There is nothing inherently wrong with the tyres, they just aren't suitable for this particular car, and that's the general problem with deviating from the tyre specified by the manufacturer.

I'll be going back to the RE050A's because I can't afford to experiment with another set, and I don't want to have to sit out track days because my tyres aren't up to the task.

I think a lot of the anecdotal "evidence" that some cheap tyres are as good is because a/. the tyres they are replacing are worn beyond the tread wear markers and b/. initial wear and feel from any new tyre will feel ok for the first few 0000km.

Ask the same people what they think after 15 -20k and the response will usually be quite different.

If money was no object we would all be replacing our tyres with brand name tyres - no question. No one would want wing wong branded tyres if they had the choice.

The real question is, 'can you get similar performance for a lot les $$$'? Bottom line is yes. Khumo, Yoki advans, Toyo, Falken and even Maxxis make tyres that cost much less and offer 80%+ of the name brand performance.

I personally can't understand why people scrimp on tyres and fuel. People will happily spend big $$$ on wheels, bling, power upgrades but choose to save a few bucks by getting cheap tyres or use shitty fuel.

Had a debate with one of the guys at work - spent $20k + getting his XR6T to over 450rwkw but has standard brakes, suspension and shit tyres.

I disagree the Bridgestones RE050A's are a fantastic tyre and have won many tyre tests out there, other brands like Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli and the fantastic Eagle F1 from goodyear are all quality, unlike nankang etc.
Whilst you/we may as amateur drivers feel that the cheapies are as good in fact when it comes to emergency stop and avoidance you will in almost all cases find the cheapies will leave you well a little peach faced.
I can't think of a Ferari or Porsche or BMW with kumho on it?can you?

I could get parliament house and make it out of paper and glue, as long as it looked the same its just as good? Using the same tread design means nothing when the actual construction of the tyre is lacking itself.
