View Full Version : Semi-syn Mobil oil used by dealers?

Just got my VY1 SV8 back from a dealer service and it's developed the dreaded lifter clatter. It had a slight clatter when hot previously, but now it's clattering all the time.

It appears the dealer is now using a version of Valvoline 10W/30 in LS-engines. I asked what they used previously (which this engine has been using for the last 100,000km). They said it was Mobil GS, but I I'm wondering if I heard properly 'cos I can't find anything about it on the web.

Anyone know what they would be referring to? I'm assuming that VE 6.0L engines (non AFM) would probably use the same type of oil as my old banger?

I'd like to just to get back to "normal" ..

In our normal workshop we use castrol 10/30, in the HSV workshop we use mobil 5/30 semi synth with fully synth available at extra cost.

Mine uses Mobil semi-syn 10/40 & then I do a change myself (using the same) between dealer service intervals. No lifter/engine noise to date - car has just clicked over 50,000 k's.

had my 15k service yesterday and they used "valvoline VPS 10w30"

no problems here.

Its likely that the Mobil product they used was available for bulk purchase only and not sold to the retail market, similarly to the old Castrol 'GTX3' 10W30. Its a possibility the Mobil oil wasnt semi-synthetic either, like the GTX3.

What "type" of Mobil oil is that? Sounds like this might be as close as I'll get these days .. might be good to go up a level from 30 to 40 for an older engine.

VPS Stands for Valvoline Professional Series which is a workshop only product (not retailed) which is a synthtic blend oil (same as castrol magntec)

comes in a range 10/30 10/40 and 15/40. you will see alot more of this product when it goes into the retail market later this year.

Why not just call the dealer again to clarify the series of mobil oil being used?.

The other alternative is to contact your local Mobil distributor (or mobil tech line) and ask them if they know what oil it might be or what oil they were supplying that dealer with. I have done this in the past and they have a record of what workshop oils are delivered in bulk.

BTW you can buy the workshop oils, its just that they come in either 20ltr or 205ltr drums as a minimum, but they will sell to the public. Contact Mobil lube line and ask them for your local Mobil distributor.

Cheers,
Phil

Mate, I've always thought that a 30 weight oil is a bit too thin...
I pick up the Mobil oil from Repco/Supercheap.
Mobil Super 2000, 10/40w, Semi Synthetic, High Performance Motor Oil. Comes in a 5 litre grey coloured container.

Will you damage anything with too thin an oil when it is hot?

I have a noisy lifter when it gets hot...

Will this kill the engine?

I'd strongly recommend a 10w-40 weight oil as I believe the 30 is too light when hot and that's why everyone is having noisey lifters at normal operating temps. Is it also coincidence that there are lifter issue with the L76 and L98 motors??

Dealers are permitted to use any brand of oil they want, as long as it at least meets the minimum specs Holden require. I've had the Valvoline in mine before, with no noise.
Interestingly, I reckon I've heard at least one person say that they had lifter noise with every single oil option out there, including the slightly thicker oils. There simply is no "perfect" option guaranteed to work.
