I am after peoples thoughts on short headers for the VZ SS. I am inclined to go this way to keep the cats and oxygen sensors in the correct spots. It will help with regards to our driveway.
Have people who have fitted these ( I am looking probably at GENIE 008ET) found them to improve the performance and sound, in that was the bang for the buck worth it. What type of cats did people hook up to these, and if anyone has any dyno figures of before and after that would be great.

If you go shorties then you are better off using the OEM cats. Pacemaker also have tri-ys that the OEM cats can be welded to without changing the original position. They are 1 3/4" primaries as well.
Cheers Mike.

If i keep the OEM cats, do people think the cost of installing the Short headers justifies the performance increase.
Or would i be better off just putting a catback on for value for money.

I fitted Sureflow shorty's to my LS2 VZ Senator for the same reason as you stated. (BTW the VZ LS2 is the only HSV that didn't come with extractors)
Although one thing in my favour is the HSV secondaries after the cats are 3" to the centre mufflers.
They definitely made a difference be it only small.
HM make shorty extractors that bolt straight upto your cats like these on ebay.

I am considering the following:
Genie Short Headers + cats opened up + x-force twin 2 1/2 for $1300.
They alternatively quoted
Genie Try Y + Outlaw cats + x-force twin 2 /2 +extensions for $1780.
I like the idea of the second system but i am leaning towards the shorties for the previous reasons.

Like Mikey said you've answered your own question. I've got Sureflo short 4>1s along with the Ballistic Cats and they're great because they're tucked up nice high away from speed humps and the like

Been there done that and wated my money.
Had a VY SS ute fitted HM short headers, upgarded the pipes after cats to 2.5 and fitted a XForce system.
Not 100% happy so I cahnged to Tri Y, hi flow cats and F1 system fitted by Mal @ Mr Muffler.
Might spend a liitle more but the note, economy and power was so much better.

What sort of difference in performance between fitting the shorting and tri - y?

Ive got pacemaker 4->1s on my VZ and they scrape alot,my car is lowered aswell.Ive ordered some short sureflows to avoid the scraping as im finally sick of avoiding certain routes you know you cant go.Going off surfwagons dyno results it seems i shouldnt lose much power,if any.Even if i do il cop it if it means scrape free driving.

I have Sureflo's short headers on my VZ SSZ with there ballistics cats
one word. AWESOME! love the sound love the extra power too.
Bonus thing with these headers is that i don't scrape on humps etc
I had a VY before and had Pacemaker tri y's and hated it because it scraped on speed humps. :vpo:

If i were you just do it, Speak to Greg @ Sureflo he'll def look after you
just make sure you get the ballistic cats to aswell. The sound alone is already worth it :eyes:

Ive got an 05 VZ SS with the sureflo shortys (1.75" primarys) , 100cpi ballistic cats and a genie twin 2.5" catback. Its effing loud, but im thinking about changing my catback as i dont have any rear resi's. Im putting out 243rwkw with a DuSpeed OTR and an Oztrack mailorder tune.

Did (do) you already have a cat back or have you hooked up to the standard system?

I know this wasn't directed at me but mine is connected to the stock HSV Z catback system and my car recently pulled 289rwkw .

I know someone who tuned their car bog stock VT and went 198rwkw. He had the Monaro intake as well.
Then he fitted the 4-1 long headers, opened up his cats and a twin 2.5 inch Xforce system and had it retuned to suit, Same tuner, same dyno and it only went to 211rwkw.
Im thinking even the stock headers arnt too bad. Only 13rwkw and $2000.
I would think the tri-y and shortie headers would produce less power than him.
Is there any threads on extractor only before and after performance. stock VS tri-y was 4-1 long and shorts?
Im going tune only and OTR at the moment so Ill let you know what power I make on stockies.

Thanks mate i've been following your posts and have just ordered the same catch can and also about to book in for the short 4 into 1's from surflo. Mine already had a 2.5 catback on it when i got it so ill leave it for now but down the track i think ill go one of there 3.5 singles.
Great results from your mods by the way and i think ill keep copying you and talk to oztrack about a tune also.
P.S i like your car alot, well done.

Just an update. I had the sureflo short 4>1 coated headers and 4.5" 100 cell cats fitted on friday. I already had a 2.5" cat back and rear resi removed. The cat back already droned very bad and that did not changed (greg didn't say it would). From the first straight bit of road i had a big smile on my face.I could feel alot more power and it seemed to rev alot easier.I will be going back as soon as i have the $$$ and getting there 3.5" single cat back in mild steel.
So for people thinking about getting cat back v headers , my vote would be go headers first (with cats). I know it's more $$$ but i think its better bang for bucks.
P.s. I have not had a tune yet, and no engine lights have come up yet(greg did say it may happen but when i get a tune the tuner can turn it off).
I have some before and after exhaust vids but not enough posts to put them up yet.
Hope this helps someone. Just my 2 cents.:)
