Hey guys

Some advice and tips needed. I currently have a DeWalt electric impact wrench which runs on 18V. The specs are similar to other makes and it is good for getting tyres off and some chassis bolts (unless they've been tightened by a zealous mechanic previously as currently is the case).

I've had my car worked on in the past and haven't had a need to touch it of late. On Sunday I had my gun fully charged but could not get off bolts holding the rear crossmember bushes (Z bushes?) that are joined by the diff and cross member as I wanted to grease them being urethane.

So having this situation happen a few times over the years with over tightening I'm interested in getting an air compressor and impact wrench / rattle gun that is much more powerful then my DeWalt electric that will allow me to do a wider range of stuff on cars. Note I'd only be using it for the impact wrench.

What do you guys recommend? What price range am I looking for a set like this?

Also can you buy compressors that run on 240V that will do the job or are portable compressors all powered by fuel.

Thanking in advance

I recommend to you a SnapOn breaker bar. Sounds like your DeWalt is up to the task for most jobs.

If you were to get a air rattle gun try sourcing a new one off ebay U.S. they are much cheaper there. I got a ingersoll rand gun shipped for $300 it's silent as a mouse and has about 1000nm in it.

The compressor has to be capable of running the tool your using..

If it cant hold and supply enough air as its being used you will find it rather gutless for the task....

No point spending $400-$1000 in an impact gun which needs a $1000-$4000 compressor to run it.

Will a breaker bar do a bolt which an electric DeWalt rattle gun can't get off? I'm guessing I'd need the biggest one they sell? What do you think?

That is something I have thought of and I guess why I need additional advice. I'll hold off purchasing the compressor and rattle gun. Anyone else have an opinion on this.....interested to get as much info as possible

a breaker bar is a must in anyones tool kit, you will find that the bolts you cant get off have been loctighted and a breaker bar to do it up. a breaker bar will do most bolts, you can get big ones for certain jobs, but a normal sized one in a normal tool kit will do pretty much all.
