Hi,

Every now and again when I try to start my car it wont kick over. It takes about 5 turns of the key before the car kicks over. Ive tried starting it up with my foot on the accelerator (as if its flooded) but made no difference. I tried listening for the pump to prime but every time it happens I'm at a shopping centre car park and I cant hear a thing. I've tried swapping fuses/relays but the problem comes back after a few days.

Should I just get a new fuel pump before it gets worse? Or could it be something else? Car has done 140,000kms.

If it's not kicking over.

1. Look at the starter
2. Look at the starter relay.

Sounds like a flat spot on the starter. (Dead zone that does not work properly)
Trying to start a modern car with fuel injection with you foot on the floor will keep it from starting.

If the pump has already reached the proper pressure you will not hear it run.

Cheers,
Steve

Seems like its the pump if the engine is cranking. Have a look at your plugs aswell, they could be on the way out.

My vy ute did the same, took a few turns before it cranked over,
thought it was battery, put a new on in and did same,
ended up being the key, the little metal nipple on key head was worn
down,

sounds like the key issue,,try the spare... could be bcm, when it dont crank, take key out and turn it around then try again, the ring around the ignition barrel, plays up too.

I was going to suggest the Key as well, You turn the key to start position and nothing happens. My 'folks VT Berlina does it only rarely, my Sisters VT also does it, but alot worse - about once every 3 - 5 starts.

Problem is usually solved by turing the key back to off / lock position and then turn back to start again. Or take key out of ignition, put it back in, and turn to start position again.

Check the contact ring on the ignition barrel. If thats Ok, Check the raised contact on the keyhead. Make sure the key contact and the barrel ring are making contact. Give both surfaces a clean.

If that still does not work, the key may have to be renewed.
