Hey guys I would like to get an opinion from you about my case, what to do.

I just had an operation "bursted appendix" it was realy bad. The doctor told me that I am lucky to be alive :)

The thing is that I've got income protection insurance and just received a call from them that burst appendix is treated as illness and not as injury?
So that means I am not covered at all :vpo: (have to wait 2 months - stand down period for illness)
I understand if you have sore troat, fewer, cold etc but not surgery etc.

I haven't been working for more than a month now and its really frustrating, no income...

Did anyone ever have the same problem as I did? Any advice is going to be helpfull.

Cheers

Is your "income protection" 24/7 Accident and illness????

I would say it comes under illness aswell, and as long as you have that cover I dont see the problem.

Only thing I dont under stand is why does is it take 2 months and for what???

I have 24/7 Accident and illness cover and if I get sick (illness) I get money within 14 days as thats what the agreement was, But in saying that, every insurance company is different, some are 14 days, 30 days, and 60days, doesnt really help waiting coz the bills and cost of living sure as hell cant wait :(

Sounds right to me, appendicitis is an illness, don't get it falling over, or lifting heavy things, or getting run over by a tractor.

I am a financial planner with a major bank and specialise in personal risk insurance.
Most income protection policy's (well the ones I use and recommend) cover you if you cant work due to injury or ILLNESS.

I would check there PDS closely and see what they do and dont cover.
Theres a lot of new players coming onto the market at the moment and some of there policys aren't worth the paper there printed on. always check the fine print.

Most products usually have a waiting period (before you can claim) of 30 days but can be anywhere from 14 days up to two years. Whats your waiting period?

I think he was saying he is covered, but since it is classified as an illness they do not cover the first 2 months.

I have just checked my insurance policy and I've got 40 days waiting period for illness. I was just hoping that they are not going to see that as an illness.

Yea the bills are coming and they never stop. I just received a bill for car rego, insurance, BAS, tax on income, motorbike rego and its all this month :) I need to win a lotto.
And before all this happend I was back home on hollidays for about a month...and BTW the airline lost all my baggage.

Tough situation there mate. But you will probably have to grin and bear it.

Look on the bright side, you have good health again and are alive to tell the story.

I had a burst appendix when I was 5 and it was misdiagnosed for days, so almost didn't make it myself. All the best.

Yeah, nothing worse than all the bills coming at once....

Ya BAS doesnt have to be paid untill the end of the month, but if you ring up they can give you an extention as long as you give them notice,

rego, well you have 2 weeks after the due date on the road, then 2 weeks off the road, then another month or so after that, dont know if you know, but technically you have 2/3 (cant remember exact) months to finalise your rego after the DUE date (obviously you gotta hand ya plates in and not drive the car) but atleast you know you got the time.

At the end of the day, ring them all up if you cant make payment ontime, tell them your circumstances and they are usually more than willing to give an extention for when you can pay it...

Or mention bankruptcy and they'll all shit bricks and give you all the time you need :D, worked for me ages ago hahahaha

Thank you guys for all the support.

I really couldn't pick the worse time to be off work. But yes, health is on first place. It's going to be hard but I'll find out the way.

I've got another appointment with my GP on Monday and I hope he is going to give me green light so I can go back to work.

Just to share my bad experience with you in future for all of you if you have some strange abdominal pain, (specially on your right side) If you go and see the doctor, insist to do the ultra sound of your belly. They told me that the ultra sound isn't going to show anything but I guess they were wrong.
When I was there, complaining about the pain (I almost couldn't walk) they just gave me morphine, few pain killers and send me home. I felt like stoned.
After few hours I was already back in more pain (when the painkillers stopped working) but it was already to late because the appendix has bursted and I could have died because of it.
