I have 235/40/18 tyres on my 06 ute . The maximum rating is 61 psi .
But what psi should i be running on an empty load ?:)

Definately no more than 42, 61 is simply the maximum the tyres can take and is never recommended for daily use ever :)

61 psi would have them looking rather like a cinnamon doughnut...
For normal driving, follow the placard recommended pressures. You could 3 or 4 extra for a loaded vehicle or for spirited driving.

Tyre pressures are a bit of an individual thing... especially on utes which have more weight bias towards the front (when unladen).
If you like a nice sharp turn in (ie minimal tyre flex) then 38-40 psi in the fronts & 34-36 in the rears will work. Chuck another 3-4 psi in the rears if you are carrying a reasonable load - and another couple of psi if you are a piano removalist.:)

40psi is what my tyre guys recommend for even wear and its always worked for me. That's cold static pressure btw as you will always get a small pressure increase with heat. Some guys use N20 to offset that slightly. But it is slight so I just use 80% N20 as I find its more readily available than stuffing around with N20 bottles. :1peek:

I always use 40 all round and never carry a load. Fronts wearing perfectly evenly (245/20 on 9" rim) backs have a fair bit of camber to fit 275/20 on 10" rims under the guard with SSSL springs without scraping so do wear more on the inside. They were reversed 5,000km ago.

I think you will find that 61psi is the maximum bead seating pressure of the tyre and you shouldn't exceed that when seating the pressure...

As for pressures I run 42psi fronts and 30-32 in the rear but don't go by my rear tyre pressure as I have quite wide rears and run a fair bit different psi compared to say a standard 235/245 which normally run around the 36-42psi average depending on weight of vehicle:)
