View Full Version : Buying a 2nd hand car for $60,000 with 100,000ks...smart or stupid?

I have been looking at Range Rover Sports for the past few months and totally LOVE them but they are still $60,000ish for examles with around the 100,000k mark. They are 6 cylinder Diesel Intercooled Turbos so they should last a long time but I remember Range Rovers of old with terrible electronics. Would the new ones be any better??

I don't want to spend $60,000 on a car and have to have it fixed lots.

Other choice is to go something like a Kluger Grande but they are a bit boring and every man and his dog has one. No one in town has a Range Rover which I like (I was the only person with a VE ute 12 months ago and now there are 30-40!!)

Hmmmm

Porsche ceyanne.

Yeah I like them too and they are cheap for what you get. And you can't kill a Porsche.

I'd go a Kluger. There is a reason why lots of people have them. Reliable with lots of toys in them. Useless off road though. My Subi Outback goes more places.

If you start looking at Cayenne's, make sure you look into servicing costs. Last thing you want to do is spend $60K on it and then find a service costs you some insane figure compared to the Kluger.

If you cant afford to pay the service and up keep in the more expensive cars then I would forget them. Budget for the worst case scenario.

Do you want/need a proper 4wd or not? Rangie is ok but then so is a Disco III HSE. A mate picked up an 18 month old Disco III SE with 30k on the clock for $55k. Good buying, never been off road just towed the horse float... and campervan. Lots of options if you just want a plaything that can't go offroad.

If you were talking about a RR Vogue I'd say go for it but the RR Sport is inferior to the D3 in almost every way other than pose factor. Much less load carrying space, not quite as good off road (partially due to ridiculously large rims for a 4WD).

I'd also recommend the TDV6 D3 (actually sold mine only a couple of months ago) but if the thought of uber expensive servicing costs doesn't appeal I'd look elsewhere. My 2yr service cost $940ish and that was just standard logbook.

Don't try and save money and buy the V6 petrol. I know 2 people who did and they've regretted it every day since.... (need a petrol tanker)

Awesome on-road and off, but I would NEVER own a Land Rover product out of warranty. BTW: A Bluetooth kit for mine was over $2k (standard Bluetooth kits won't integrate with the LR Stereo.....

Maybe ask the same question on the aulro (australian landrover owners) forum. They're a good bunch of guys with a lot of tech knowledge about these vehicles.

If your not going off road I woul go an x5 td. Much cheaper to repair and IMO a better car or as been said a porsche

I just sold a Kluger Grande (Mrs's car) and couldn't rate it highly enough. We looked at a new rangie or Disco but ended up with a new Prado Kakadu (Bought the Toyota as I gave me more peace of mind). Do a google search for "most reliable cars" the landrover /range rover almost every time comes in dead last and believe me out of warranty repairs to a rangie is (A) highly likely and (B) requiring a second mortgage.

The newer the model , the better they are :teach:.The current ones are awsome

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for .

Obviously try and go for one with low mileage, one owner if possible , and full service history.

Regarding the other makes , it all comes down to personal choice . I know plenty of Toyotas that have had their fair share of problems and I guess you have just have to be lucky when buying a second hand vehicle .

Just make sure you have a little in the kitty($$$) for unexpected surprises and remember, buying a second hand vehicle is one thing, but being able to afford to maintain it, is another............Cheers John

No I don't want one for offroad. I have a small Suzuki 4WD basher for that. Just getting INCREDIBLY sick of poor roads and speed bumps and gutters and car parks etc. They all seems to be getting worse. Even driving my parents stock Commodore is a pain with gutters etc. I love the V8 and noise and cool looks of a lowered car but need to mature a bit and get a more sensible car for everyday. And maybe a motorbike for the fun speed.

The Range Rover is just a bit too much of a worry for me in terms of costs involved (potentially) with a 100,000km car....as I also do high k's so buying a car with 100,000 wouldn't be too smart.

A Kluger would be more than enough of an offroad car (odd 5k trip down the dirt road to the river etc).

Also Nissan Murano's look cool and have lots of nice stuff inside.

I think a day of test driving is needed with some 2008 and newer cars.

Thanks heaps though guys!!

I guess it all depends on what kind of new car warranty was left and the condition of the car. For that price you might as well buy a new car.

Myself, I would go the Hyundai Santa Fe in the diesel, manual of course, 5 year unlimited k warranty.

I’ve got a couple of mates with fairly new Range Rover Sports and they are sensational. The brand does have a bad rap but I’ve been told they’ve improved a lot and the ones I know of haven’t had any problems. They’re both V8 versions and I’m thinking of getting one myself as a daily.

+1 for the not owning a landrover out of warranty. They have never been known for reliability (see topgear) but they are very nice. I would expect servicing costs to be high, and something like a VW Toureg or X5 would be a better choice both are depreciating nicely now days and similar high service costs as any premium suv has. Kluger is a nice vehicle, preferably AWD model and if you buy used ensure its not ex-rental or also Toyota Prado Grande, not a lot to go wrong with toyota,

But , better off getting one with a bit of warranty .

Problem with the Disco 3 and 4 , is those rear doors are ugly .

It's a 4wd, ugly is standard. If you wnat pretty don't buy a 4wd.

As said above if 4wd isn't necessary look at X5s or the equivalent Merc.

I'd give them a wide berth. Father in law and his best friend have owned 4 between them and had nothing but trouble, especially the 2005-ish models.

Also, a friend of mine bought a VW Toureg, the V10 turbo I think, and has also had problems. Trouble is, it costs a mint to repair every time something breaks. He is trying to get rid of it, but the lease payout is too high.

It depends on what you want from a car. If you're not going to use the 4WD or tow something heavy, why buy one? If you do want those things, get a Japanese 4WD, as they will be more reliable.

If you want the Range Rover because you like it, go nuts, but expect it to cost a shedload.

If your doing high km's like you say surely you would be looking at turbo diesel, so that would mean a Prado I would have thought. My parents 2 year old 3L TD averages about 8L/100 on highway, and actually drives pretty nicely and the auto seems to be the pick. Same as you they went from a tuned VYSS to the Prado because of the roads in western NSW.

I’d have a chat with a place that specialise in the car. See what they say. Try getting an estimate for servicing and potential things that may go wrong. Better to buy what you want.

Wait for the right one if that's what you want.

Can someone photoshop this picture with the bonnet up....may give a more realistic view on Rangie ownership...lol
I think its luck of the draw with a rangie/landrover some are great some not so but its the reputation that gives them horrendous resale values.
When I was considering a disco 4HSE it was the owners on the landrover forums that in the end turned me off them with the horror stories.

:teach: It all comes down to luck with ANY second hand car.

We just got rid of our BMW X5 (bought brand new 04) and had a fairly good run out of it .

The main reason we sold it was , it was getting a bit old and it is now where owning one of these type of cars will cost you a lot of money. It`s things like sensors ,control valves and switches etc ,that are expensive . The actual servicing is quite reasonable.

We have replaced it with a new Range Rover Sport (2010 model), with the extended fac. warranty ( wish me luck )

Buying a car with 100,000km is probably the turning point where things start to go sour.

I spoke to a dealer principle of a major delership and there is a definate perception that 100,000km cars are over the hill so to speak. They really have issues selling cars with more than 100,000km, trade ins will get next to nothing after 100,000km racks up.

I wouldnt spend over $10,000 for a car with more than 100,000km but thats just me. No matter what car it is. I want a sence of newness to the car.

I would say get a new Kluger instead.
