Just heard some nutter shot dead a police dog and wounded two cops one being the handler and senior constable., routine call. Thing that really pisses me off is the tax payer will fork the bill for this aR@ehole to have a free ride in jail, its too easy bring back breaking rocks and hard time

Unfortunatly I'd say that for the police dog handler, this incident may end his long and probably distinguished caree. He has now lost his best mate and it generally takes some time (years) to develop the close working relationship and trust between officer and dog thats required.

Badass dog yes, well trained, could be argued no. That dog continually had to be forced from the offender and then turns on its handler locking on to his hand.
NZ and the UK need to get with the program. There is no point having guns in vehicles or response vehicles with weapons in them. Walk up to a crazed lunatic who pulls a gun on you "hang on a sec mate. Just let me run back to the car and get my gun to make this fight a bit fairer". or "hang on mate. I just need to call someone down here that has a gun as well. Just give us 10 minutes would ya". It's ridiculous. The relevant Governments have a responsibility to provide the safest workplace they can. By not supplying the tools to the troops to defend themselves, against what is a very real and proven threat as shown above, they are failing to provide that safe workplace.
Policing is inherently dangerous, but measures can still be put in place to minimise harm.
