Anyone wanna share stories if they have actually eaten it, I would probably try it, if I didnt know what it was.
Well my old man was saying to me a while ago horse meat is suppose to be some of the best meat going around due to the fact horses' are clean animals and don't have much fat on them.

my grandads eaten it before and he says it tasted tough as boot
that said he's a depression era cheapskate so it was probably an old nag that'd almost carked it at one of the stations he worked on years and years ago... theres enough variation in steak to make me think a horse bred for it'd probably be fine. last i checked equine and bovine are cladistically pretty close

Lived in the former Soviet Union in the mid 90's. Horse meat is on a lot of menus and from memory was really tasty though the bit of fat on it is off-putting....very thick and yellow.
Also unknowingly ate dog meat on a number of occasions. Once I found out I nearly :spew: I''m a dog lover....just don't love them for dinner!!

I ate raw horse mince in woggyland last time i was there...
Was apparently a specialty of the area. I didn't know what it was, thought it smelled a bit strange and after eating a bit asked what it was.
Taste wasn't too bad at all really...bit strong compared to beef.
Wouldn't go looking for it though.
There would be something quite satisfying having lost your dough on Number 5 in race 6 at Flemington knowing you could go and eat one of his family members as revenge. :)

Having eaten many "strange" things over the years - horse, elk, whale, 'roo, emu, possum, witchety, rabbit, sushimi, as well as all the regular stuff, like steak, chicken, turkey, fish, crab, lobster, prawn, bugs, scallops etc etc, I can comfortably say that there's nothing wrong with horse.
Properly cooked - ie - slow - it is great. Best comparison I can immediately think of is that of beef-cheek - a bit stringy, and a bit glutinous, but if cooked properly there's absolutely nothing wrong with it... In fact - not bad at all... :)

My friend and i always joke about eating them after a loss....or turning them into glue
*I like horses though and don't think I could seriously eat one (under normal circumstances)

people eat snails and frogs and all sorts of weird stuff.. cant say I'd go on the hunt for horse, but if it was dished I would give it a go..
worked with a fella that used to use a slingshot to get pidgeons off the roof, then he would come in the next day with what I thought was "chicken sangas"

My grandfather used to tell the story of being stuck in the snow in Albania as a soldier. Three soldiers and a horse.
By day 3 they were starving and one of them suggested eating the horse, the other two refused.
By day 5 they gave in. Best meal he ever had

I could not knowingly eat horse meat, but if someone dished it up and didn't tell me what it was or claimed it was beef etc, i would..
Its like Roo meat, no doubt its probably quite nice to eat, but i cant knowingly eat it...

No doubt we've probably all eaten it in a hotdog before.. Hotdog would contain all the items above and some.. Throw it all in a big blender and you wouldn't know the difference.

I eat Mortadella... yum its so nice on fresh crusty bread with some mustard. So I guess I've eaten ass (donkey...) so horse isnt such a stretch.
I'd give it a crack - lean meat, if cooked properly is meant to be delicious. The only meat I probably wouldn't eat is dog - being a massive dog lover. Could understand someone not eating horse for the same reason.
My favorite meat is Kangaroo, apparently so good for you that it wouldn't be out of place for a doctor to prescribe it to you..

Ever tried the fruit bat in Vanuatu? Seriously, protein is protein. It's the cultural side that catches us out.
