View Full Version : How low can I go without replacing springs VE

Hey guys,
Just wanted to know how low could I go without actually replacing my shocks+struts?
I can only go about 30-40mm down on the front (due to my driveway) but I wanted to go a little lower on the back, maybe about 50-60mm, might even out the car a little better as well.
I'm just concerned I will do damage if I go to low without proper suspension.
Any thoughts?

Just changing springs may look good but is pretty useless and can be dangerous if the standard shocks bottom out while driving (hitting bumps etc, no a couple of ppl that have had accidents because of this...)
for what its worth atleast buy shocks with a shorter travel, may get away with front struts.
just my 2cents

Yeah, I know, I had my old VN with cut springs and it was sitting on bump stops, no ride at all, fair say I never had an accident, but at the same time I'm no stupid driver and I would look at the road right infront instead of cars or pedestrians looking out for pot holes and such...actually that makes me quite stupid..
But I don't want it to be like that, I want some ride seeing I have kids now and a nagging wife, need everyone to be happy :)
I might look into struts, etc. Just that pedders said I could get away without them seeing I wasn't going that low, but that was for a 30-35mm drop all round, I want a bit lower on the back...

30-35mm...from current height. Which isn't much, but he also said the SS's have 'performance' struts and shocks anyway....i got no idea....

if you go any lower than 30mm you will need shortened shocks on the VE's

Yeh thats what I think I will do, gotta get rid of my wheels first, then use that cash to buy proper suspension...

Yep! :goodjob: I had King SSL all round on my SSV sedan for 12 months before Monroe/Kings released their shortened shocks. The handling improved markedly when the Monroe GTs went in!! Before that it was actually dangerous on some roads!!
The other advantage to waiting and doing it all at once is it will save you around 3 hours duplicated labour to fit shocks if you do that later. (That's what I was charged by another place before I started using Black Diamond (Protek).)

The only other thing I'm tossing between is do I spend double again and get coilovers?

I can't answer that one. Many people swear by them and others who have had them have sold them on. John at Protek Tyres in Oakleigh (Black Diamond) has had both and always gives honest, unbiased advice.

If you plan on doing track work, yeah for sure and it has it's advantages on the street too!
I personally couldn't see myself getting 'that serious' with track racing and/or adjusting heights when needed etc. So i opted for a general package which consists of King SSL all round and Monroe GT Sport shocks all around pic here (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/slowe21/VE%20SS%20-%20Lowered%20June%202010/P6141502-crop.jpg). Very happy with the result! :)
Give the boys at Protek Oakleigh a call and i'm sure they can tell you more.
Cheers,
Andy

Yeah that looks like where I want to be..but the front looks a little too low, can you measure the height from ground to front spoiler for me??
The main reason I wanted coilovers was because I could get the height perfectly for my driveway, otherwise I'm guessing and if I stuff up that guess, I won't be able to park in my garage anymore :(

Good idea, when you come down my place, the test will be to see if you can get it up there :) Your car is where I would like to be but seems a bit too low..

If you are primarily after looks go Kings springs and Monroe GT shocks/struts. Most drivers will think this a quantum leap in handling.
I used TEIN coilovers in my VZ and can only say that the car handled brilliantly, but then my expectation of suspension is higher than most. It was overkill at twice the price of the King/Monroe option.
Protek highly recommended as is Advantage Suspension in Moorabin. No BS advice.

Thanks for that, I don't really want to fork out so much just for suspension, so I might stick with King/Monroe option. Just need to really stipulate to those who are doing it that I can only go so far.
Protek and Advantage are quite far from where I am, anyone recommend anything for the northern suburbs? Pedders are good but quite expensive..

i put kings sssl all round with the monroe shocks to suit. the ride is great, handeling has improved, and it doesnt look like a off roader now!
with the 22s i still have 100mm clearence, i take it down dirt roads, up gutters, tow trailers, carry bikes and all sort in the tray, never had a problem. only scraped for the first time on the weekend, when i was goin up a dirt track with the bike tralier on and bike gear and camping gear filling the tray.
save the coin and get shocks, my sisters ute has the same springs as mine with stock shocks, and it rides like arse compaired to mine. also with the spring and shocks it takes out the bouncy felling that i find you get with stock ve suspension.

Mate as others have said if youre going the springs and struts route definately get them both done at the same time. I had Pedders sportsryder springs put in first which lower 25-30mm. At first the stock struts handled it okay but the ride then deteriorated quickly and badly with it crashing around over every little bump. I then had to pay double to get the sportsryder struts installed. Great ride after that.

At the lowest point(s) of the SS front bar -- 15cm from bar to ground.....both sides. Measured in my garage on a flat ground.

Fantastic, thats probably as low as I could go and your car looks pretty low. So you had SSL (Super Super Low) Kings and Monroe Shocks?

I have ultralows and kingspring bumpstops with the stock shocks. It seems to ride good but I think these shocks won't last long with it this way. But as others have said go the short body shocks, they sit abit lower with the shorter shocks I believe.
I'm going to go koni shocks or teins soon. I have terrible axle tramp at the moment and matched shocks will help fix this somewhat I believe.
I had real sticky tyres before have changed now to kumho ku31's so if that doesn't improve it by much i will go straight to coilovers.
