Hi Guys,

I have a VYII SS Ute and would love to have a bit more power at my hands.
It is standard with a cat back exhaust that was on it when I bought it. (Not to sure what brand or specs it is...) Sounds good though!

My question is;

Is it worth getting a Mafless Tune done without getting headers?
I cant afford both at the moment...
Or
Is it worth waiting until I have the funds?

I dont know the technicals behind the tuning...
Does the car get re-tuned once headers are installed?

Can anyone give me a rough price guide and run down on what changes are made in a Mafless tune?

Cheers in advance,

Better off getting the full exhaust first. If you do the tune now then the exhaust later you'll need to go back to get the tune touched up so you'll end up paying more in the long run. The car wil run fine with a full exhaust and standard tune till you can afford the tune.

In short Yes it is worth it IMO. Tune and headers are about the same money. If you use the same tuner after the headers are installed it will only be a "touch up tune " and doesn't cost much at all. As for what they do in the tune 1 of the more tech guys would be better answering that . If you could stretch the budget a OTR with your tune.

Brsbane has lots of places you could inquire at.

Definately worth it I had a cat back on my VYSS and when I got it tuned made a hell of difference not just in pwer but fuel economy as well, my cars been tuned for nearly a year now and I still got extractors for it.. Don't mind having the get a touch up tune doen when I finally get around to putting them on.

Thanks for all the input (and so quick too!)

In regards to the OTR;

Any suggestions on a brand that should be used?
Advantages of some over others?
Cost?

Cheers

I was pretty much in the same mind set about a year ago. Headers or OTR and tune. I went with the OTR (Duspeed) and tune and was pretty pumped on the new found power. That's all with a stock exhaust.

The main reason I went down this path first was bang for buck. A full DF exhaust would've killed the bank at the time and I'm pretty much a 'do it right first time' kinda person.

Anyway if you go with OTR and tune get it from Oztrack. He does Duspeed OTRs with tunes for very competitive prices and is pretty much the guru on LS tuning.

Good luck!

Thanks Mate,

Where is Oztrack?
Aren't they in Sydney?

If you want a better driving experience then get the tune first.

Save up the headers and get them fitted down the track, a slight tune adjustment would be ideal but not 100% necessary.

You don't always have to do the OTR, headers, Exhaust then tune (Just because plenty of people do this does not make it the only way).

I recently did OTR only and tune on my daily driver a VX Berlina and could not be happier, given it was very cost effective

Are you sure it had 290 rwkw or was it 290 at the motor. My old vy ss only got around 220 rwkw with a mafless tune.

sooooo the 290rwkw car was tunned (hence why you know figures) and yet was beaten by a tunned stock VY SS. The guy in the cammed car, did he weigh 410kg? Maybe he was Stevie Wonder and he just missed a gear?

So yours was a mail order?
Is this hard to install yourself?
What is involved?

I am on a budget, but also like to make sure that I get the right thing the first time if you know what I mean. Not have to change down the track.

I am in the middle of organising a new clutch and will have that installed, so I thought I might look at a Mafless and OTR at the same time...

What sort of $$$ have you put aside to spend as there's nothing wrong with getting 2nd hand parts like headers, catback, otr and fitting them up yourself or with the help of some mates........then get a mail order tune to finish it off.

Should be some bargains to be had in the classified section of the forum :)

Um

:bsmeter:

Not neccessarily...

So it was mentioned that the cammed(mafless??) :hide: 290rwkw was a gen3, the VY SS is also. So that means that they are both gen3s and mafless. So we can confirm from this that a car with a cam is slower.....:rofl::rofl:

Mate, do a mail order, but spend 150 or so on a set of HSV headers. If you plan on doing headers in the future, do them first, then have the tune to suit. All up my mods have cost around $1200 on my Monaro. Catback was a barter for some work, Headers $150 from here, fitting and open cats was done in exchange for some IT work, diff gears $250 off here, 4" mafless pipe $75 from here, tune was 500 (mail order sort of) and fitting the gears was $400. I am not a tight ass, just aware. If I see something here that I may want, I buy it, and fit it when I have the coin, or the chance is there to work out a deal. I have great power and a great car. Having a mortgage and being single at the time meant I never had a lot of coin, but ot what I wanted by being astute.
