I looking to buy a LX Torana Hatch but may have to go east to get one. If the car is registered in another state I assume it will have to go over the pits to get it registered in WA? I am mindful of the fact that a post July 1976 vehicle will require some form of emission control hardware which most likely will have been removed. Any info or tips will be appreciated.

cheers

there is 2 ways around this....
1. you will have to convert it back to how it was on the show room floor, ie std exhaust manifolds and inlet manifolds...

2. convert it to gas and remove the system after its past...

either or will b costly..
to convert it to gas u will need a licensed fitters ticket to pass it...

Interstate or overseas vehicle
If you bring a vehicle from interstate and want to license it in Western Australia, you can do so without the need for a vehicle examination. However, licensing an overseas vehicle does require a vehicle examination. You will also need an Import Approval.

License a vehicle from interstate
If a light vehicle coming to Western Australia from the Eastern States meets the criteria below it can be be licensed without the need for an examination.
Light vehicles include:

Motor cars
Motorcycles, including mopeds
Goods/ Commercial vehicles
Trailers, including trailer plant
Caravans.
Criteria
The light vehicle:

Has a Tare weight and Aggregate weight less than 4500kg
Is currently licensed in an Australian jurisdiction
Has been licensed in your name for at least 12 months
Has an approved immobiliser fitted if required (note some exemptions apply - refer to our immobilisers web page)
The vehicle is unmodified; or has been modified and issued with a modification permit from an ES jurisdiction; or has a modification that does not require approval
The vehicle does not require an annual examination [taxi, hire vehicle, bus, driving school vehicles, vehicles with more than 13 seats (including driver), vehicles used to carry children to and from school (8 seats or more)].
You will need to attend a Licensing Centre or regional Licensing Agent to license the vehicle. To save you time, we have provided the 'Application to license an interstate vehicle without inspection' Form MR20 below. If possible you can complete and bring the form with you (forms are also available at Licensing Centres and regional Licensing Agents).

More information, including a list of other documents you will need to bring with you, is provided in the form.

There's the big clause in the middle there... It can be registered without an examination if it was already registered in your name for 12 months. If you purchase the car over east and want to register it here, it will need to be examined.

Have a good read thru the NCOP's on what is required, but at the end of the day, it can be luck of the draw on what gets passed and what doesn't.

White lie is 100% correct. I've done this before and dpi told me the same.

Yep I also agree with white lie, its luck of the draw. Some how my GTO passed with a cam, decent exhaust and 90mm ride height ( floor to lowest point of the car). All the inspector said was dont rev to high when passing cops as ill get a yellow sticker . I went to Balcatta on a friday arvo if that helps.

so what happens when you had a engine conversion LS3 from LS1 what happens does that need a different inspection before examination at testing station

Depends if they pick up on it or not... Or if you declare it I guess.
May need the 5 gas test, which is what they'll still require if they pick up that the camshaft is modified.

But if the car was already registered here and you want it examined for the engine change, then its a slightly different process to registering a vehicle or getting a complaince notice (yellow sticker) removed.

I suppose there is no reason why I couldn't transport the car to WA but retain QLD registration in my name (use a friends QLD address)? Obviously it will be off the road for 12 months which is no big deal while I complete a restoration.
