Hi all,

Thought I'd start a thread about car wash places that let use ur own car wash products ie. bucket, wash mits, detergent etc.

So I'll start the ball rolling with the autobrite carwash (seaford?) just past the intersection of seaford rd and dandenong frankston hwy next to the BP. The operator there really doesn't mind as long as the place isn't too busy - which is almost never anyway.

Hopefully this helps some people in the area.

cheers,

Gav

By rule no your not alowed. If they can't regulate what soaps you use then they won't know what your putting down there drain. Most places have water recycling machines so the detergents that they use suit the systems. I was once told that I couldn't use my own detergent/bucket because the EPA does checks to make sure they are complying. I was told by an operator of a car wash place that I can go ahead and use my own bucket/sponge/soap but he is obligated to write down my rego plates and if the EPA fines them then he can pass on my details and report me for using my own soaps.

As far as the bucket sponge thing I think people sit in the bays for far too long if they have there own sponge and when you want to get a load of people on say a saturday morning in and out, you can do it faster if you have a jet wash and a broom. I personally use bucket/sponge but I don't mess around and in and out in less than 10 mins.

while on the subject, does anyone still do it at home sneakily

i.e drive into the garage filthy, but come out sparkling

My neighbour does that.. It's funny seeing water running out from under a closed garage door down the driveway.

Far out I could not even begin to imagine the mess I would make in my garage if i try and wash my car in there with a hose!

I doubt many places would be that keen due to the recycling systems for a start. Other than that they are a business trying to make money so they certainly would not encourage people to bring along their own stuff - it just doesnt make sense.

I would say some employees working at certain places might turn a blind eye but if the owner found out they wouldn't be too impressed.

The 2 car washes i use do not have any signs up stating you cannot use your own bucket and detergent, so I do. Without having these signs posted I doubt there could be any recourse via EPA.

Just rock up to any carlovers. Hose it down, use your own soap and wash mit, hose off. Easy.
Although having a water tank and pump at home eliminates the need for that. :)

Car washes are not manned after hours

Nobody there then to hassle you about the buckets :)

Washing the car inside may not be illegal could be a shade of gray though

Keep it up

I usually go after hours (about 9ish) when there is no attendant to bug me and so I can take my sweet arse time to clean my car becuase not many people are there to wash their cars as well.

Excuse my ignorance - but are you not allowed to wash your cars in your own front yard/lawn, in the eastern states?

Sheesh, if that is the case i couldn't imagine going down to a car wash place.... I spend a minimum of 2 hours on the car every time i wash it... The joy of owning a black car i guess :errr:

Best thing i did was buy a cheap Karcher $99 and a $12 bucket.
Water in bucket sucks directly into Karcher which uses 80% less water.
Easy and i can do it at home. Why didnt i do this earlier.

Ha Ha Badseed i have been guilty of that in the past. Not many would admit it though:doh::doh:

No washing cars at all in Victoria except carwash places or if you have your own tank. Mind you its been raining all day and it has been a wet winter with storages on the way up. Fingers crossed.

I still cant figure out why they've got such strict restrictions in the east compared to the west, when it rains so much in Melbourne! Is it because there's a much bigger population using more water?

I use FW1, which doesn't need water. I'm a bit paranoid about rubbing dirt into the finish, though, so i always give the car a quick hose down before. It makes the ute look pretty good, plus you can use the stuff on your rims and windows

No matter how much rain we get it stays under 40%, something smells fishy...

You know what would be handy? An underground carpark that has a hose, a drain, and is well lit. A place where you could wash your car out of the sun/ heat in summer and out of the wind/ cold in winter, and.....well pretty much any time you want really. Like, say under a block of units. Wait a minute, if i just walk downstairs.......... :eyes:

Cheers
