I apologise in advance if this has been covered but I searched & couldn't find the answer....
As someone relatively new to the V8's I was wondering what the basic differences in these engines are & what model Commodores they individually appear in?
Thanks guys.

LS1; was the first of the lot, 5.7l with cathedral port heads. came out in vt, then a ls6 manifold was put on for the vx-vz
LS2: is 6L, similar heads as the LS1. came out in the vz hsv an ve series one hsv
L76: 6L came out in some vz holdens,
L98: 6L came out in the ve holdens. has different design heads to the ls1 and ls2.
LS3: 6.2L. comes out with the e2 hsv.

Probably better explanation than mine but here goes -
LS1 was the first Gen III V8 in Commodores - It replaced the 5.0 Holden V8. It was introduced into the VT II in June 1999. It had 220 kW backed by a 6 speed Tremec T56 manual or 4 speed auto. By VX power was upped to 225 kW and got the LS6 inlet manifold, injectors, and upgraded engine management system, nothing else changed. By VY the 225 kW was used in the Berlina, Calais and Statesman models, The SS models got the 235 kW mainly due to a revised twin exhaust system. VY II SS power went up to 245 kW, Other Series II V8 models got the 235 kW.
Things started to change more with the VZ, The LS1 got electronic throttle control, and power went up to 250 kW in the SS models, Statesman V8 increased to 245kW and 465Nm, and V8 Calais and Berlina remained unchanged at 235kW and 460 Nm. It also got new split engine covers to replace the full cover that had been used since the VT II
In January 2006, The LS1 was discontinued in the VZ model, as it did not meet emission requirements. It was replaced with the L76, 6.0 litre. The L76 was the first of the Gen 4 V8's used in the Commodore. It had 260kW and 510Nm. L76 is the version that has the capability for the displacement on demand (DOD) But this was not used on the VZ model.
VE, and late 2006 - 07 VZ Utes got the L98 V8, which is the same as the L76, but with no provision for DOD. The L76, with the DOD enabled, made a return in the later model Automatic VE's. But instead of calling it DOD, Holden called it Active Fuel Mangement or AFM.
Manual VE models kept the L98.

LS3 came out in April 08 for the MY09 update HSV's so all E1 HSV's built after this have the LS3 motor (like mine :jester:)
