Hey guys,
my ride is coming up on the big two zero zero, zero zero zero.
What would you recommend that needs doing or checking at the big service? Ride is a 2004 Caprice (LS1), in good condition.
So far I am thinking the following :
Engine oil flush and new oil
New oil filter
New fuel filter
Injector clean
Diff oil (is that even a thing to check?)
Gearbox oil (see above)
New spark plugs
New air filter
New coolant (and water, obviously)
Wheel alignment and rotate (also check camber, tyres are only 10000km old)
Check for leaky shocks (shouldnt be, they are only about a year old)
Wont be replacing brake pads, as I am about to replace the discs with some 330mm VXR discs and calipers :)
Some of this probably doesn't need to be done, but I've had the car now for 40,000km (a bit over a year) and serviced it at 10K intervals, but I'd like peace of mind that its all done and I don't have to worry about it.

That list pretty much covers everything, excpet suspension which would be good to check before/during the wheel alignment / rotate.
Diff and Gearbox are probally overdue if they havent been done by now (although in the book the diff oil is apperently filled for life) a Trans service wont do any harm either, fresh oil will always be better than old oil

I guess that should be like a birthday for your car or something! That's a crazy figure. Congrats on keeping the old girl chugging along for that distance. Just goes to show that a bit of care can go a long way if you're wanting to keep the vehicle for the long haul. I'm flat out impressed!

How about an air con service - especially with the warmer weather on it's way....

Thanks for the suggestions guys, Aircon service is definitely a must, nfi how long its been since it was last serviced. Suspension I'll get them to check over, is there anything in particular I should be looking for? Whats a trans service? Transmission? Transaxle? I'll put it on the list, this is the big service after all :D
@Tangles - Yeah, its a damn good car, still tight as a drum, no real problems with it. I'll probably have it for the next 4-5 years, then either give to the girlfriend or sell and upgrade to a WM Grange (or equivalent of in 2015 :) )
Are there any other consumables that can/should be replaced?

I'm in the same boat - '03 VY1 SV8 with 180,000km .. goes well, everything works, looks fine, no rattles, etc. I can't justify an upgrade, although I'm seriously thinking about trading it in for a Crewman SS. "Old" cars now don't feel old, like cars from 20years ago.

+2 for the same boat.
My VY Series 2 SS has just ticked over 180k .
This service has alot of wear and tear parts to be replaced. Rear disks, power steering pump, new belts, and all the other general stuff. Will get it done end of the month when back from Metallica!

Does power steering fluid generally need to be replaced? If so, I'll put it on the list!

Definitely new brake fluid unless changed in the last two years.

You need to get someone who knows their stuff to go over the whole car IMO.
Looking for leaks and wearing parts that need replacement before they crap themselves.
A short list could include:
- all suspension bushes esp strut top and radius rod bushes, ball joints, steering rack, belts, all hoses checked, rear main seal, tailshaft centre bearing and donut, unis, battery, radiator end tanks, filters, compression test, 02 sensors, cv joints and boots, etc etc
replace all that and it will be a new car, ask me how I know :jester:

You in Hobart mate, or still up North.
I can recommend someone to check over it for you.

Out of interest, what are some symptoms from worn tailshaft centre bearing and donut?

driveline clunks and jerking on constant throttle is a common one.

My 200,000k service was nothing special as everything had been kept top notch over each regular service......just the usual for me, i guess i'm lucky for the previous conscious owner. The only thing i think i should have done was the o2 sensors as i think they may be on the blink, the fuel econ dropped a couple of lt's recently (just hit 206,000km).
If you've owned the car for a while i'm assuming you will have a good idea about whats been touched, replaced, fixed over the years.....go over old receipts to see what may have slipped past the radar that are prob due for a check.....
