Just a quick question. I'm washing the filter in my OTR but want to mow the lawn while I wait for it to dry. Is it safe to start the car up and back it out of the driveway without the filter installed.

Definitely. As long as you are not driving around without a filter for long periods that is fine.

If you get some course grit sand and put it down the intake it absorbs any oil residue in the intake and removes any carbon deposits in the combustion chamber ;)
Just kidding, please don't do that...

Also with the sand, it port and polishes the heads.

See Evman now you're just being silly. The fine sand out of my sons sandpit worked much better. I got a couple more seconds out of it before it seazed.

Also with the sand, it port and polishes the heads.
Only if you use the fine sand fron the Gold Coast coarse sand like down here gets clogged in the throttle body.
cheers

OP... that's fine mate...
i drive mine often without the air cleaner... actually did on saturday... 6 runs at the drags and then a 44km drive home at 10pm... i saw a lot of bugs, which means i must of chomped a few into the motor too...
they burn up eventually ;)...
i've known guys to run with no air cleaner all the time, day and night, for months on end... a quick start, idle across the lawn, and shut down won't hurt anything...

Lots of guys run without filters at the drags. I'm not game to because knowing my luck it would ingest something bad.......... :(

While we're on the subject of filter out :)
Going to the plex tomorrow, How much time could you gain by pulling the filter out and dragging???
Or is it not really worth it?

I am running a VCM OTR on my car mate and it made 7hp difference between having the filter in and not. Whether yours will do the same and whether it's enough to warrant the (minimal) effort is another matter :)

...............warrant the (minimal) effort......
And (minimal?) risk???

:yup: There's not much on a strip that's going to get sucked into the intake but there is always the pre-run burnouts, and there's almost always someone doing one in front of the car before it's your turn ;)

Yeah, mine a VCM OTR aswell :D, good piece of gear :)
just didnt know if it was worth taking it out for the drags (when I get there of coarse)
much of a time difference if removed or is there no point.

It seems there is a common misconception that only rocks and ford pistons will damage your engine if ingested through the throttle body if no air filter is fitted.....
Unfortunately this is far from the case. Why do they make air filters that will restrict the flow of any particles larger than 10 microns ?? (a human hair is about 40 microns) Because the very fine dust you can't even see does lots of damage in the long run. Might as well throw some valve grinding past in with the oil to speed up the process
Dust is just fine sand and has the same abrasive properties as larger particles. For a 7 horsepower gain or any other reason, it is not recommended to run the engine for any length of time without the filter fitted :)
