Hi all,

Looking for traditional v8, grumbly, muscle car note to my ss ute. Already have bought 1 3/4 4into1 di filippo headers, 100cpi ballistic high flow cats and will have twin 3" mandrel bent pipes in mild steel. Just not sure which way to go on the following:
1) 2 centre straight through mufflers with no rear resonator
2) 2 centre hot dogs with rear straight through resonator

let me know what you rekon.

I reckon you need to do a search. Hundreds of threads like this already.

By the way do option 2 :)

I'd go with two centre mufflers plus a rear resonator, as it'll still be very loud with the 3" pipe. Also I'd recommend going with a H pipe setup instead of the x if you like more of the grumbly note. I changed my xforce twin 3" to a H pipe setup and am really happy with it. Also the H is a fair bit louder than the x as well ;)
Also look at getting it done in aluminised instead of plain mild steel if you're keeping the car for a while, shouldn't cost much more.

this is only 2.5 inch but with 2 hotdogs and redback rear muffler!

YouTube - warm start up,1 3/4 pacemakers hi flow cats 2.5 inch mild steel 2 hotdogs and rear muffler

and another with 13/4 tri y's and centre hot dogs and rear muffler
YouTube - 1 3/4 Trywi's 2.5 inch hi flow cats 2 hot dogs and rear muffler

the video recorder couldn't handle the bass! sounds much better than this!

thanks for the reply guys. I think after looking at the two vids a 3" pipe with hot dogs might be too loud. It sounds good with 2.5" but as Matt said the 3" should still be a nice note with centre mufflers (still might leave out the resonator :) Will def. look into the H pipe idea and as for the steel, i just thought aluminised was way more $$ and ppl have said its "tinny"?

finally since I am gonna have centre mufflers, any brands better then others for nice v8 grumble? I am leaning toward magnaflow.

I think you should contact an exhaust specialist like sureflo exhausts and ask greg's expert opinion on what to do.

That's ok mate:rofl:

As for the pipe, aluminised is mild steel with an aluminised coating, while plain mild steel is just painted and this will burn off pretty quickly. Aluminised shouldn't cost much more than the plain mild steel but will last a fair bit longer so it's a good option if you're keeping the car for a while.
Stainless is the most expensive and longest lasting but as you said some people think it gives a tinnier sound than mild.

For a nice v8 rumble these chambered berklee's (http://www.bestmufflers.com/bshop/product_info.php?cPath=343_344_498&products_id=2560&osCsid=52ad8606d6fef1a43ad5a59d805cb32f) should do a good job, as the chambered design does give a deeper note.

thanks for clearing that up, yeah i just assumed you meant stainless. Def. wanna keep the mild but from what you have explained id be stupid not to go for the aluminised mild steel.

ive come across the berklee brand but just seems to me that its mainly people with v6's that are going for them. havnt seen any1 with a v8 use em. Hooker and flowmaster is another brand ppl have suggested but havnt found any examples where i liked the exhaust note they produced.

Di fillipo 2.5'' with hotdogs replacing mufflers, I had this on my VY SS sounded awesome.

Haven't tried it myself, it would give a very clappy note and also more inclined to drone apparently. You'd also lose a few kw due to loss of scavenging effect. Personally I think the H is the way to go as it still gives a more defined v8 note, but has the scavenging effect as well.
A cheap bolt in like the supercat might be the way to go and if you get sick of the note, get the x cut out and go with a H ;)
