I give up!:vpo:

My bride bought Photoshop Elements 8.0 home the other day and I have been trying to work out how to create one of those opaque/semi-transparent bonnet images to no avail.

I realise I need to get into the last century let alone this one as far as IT is concerned but it all is getting way too frustrating, thus confirming my previous conduct of sticking my head in the sand when it comes to new fangled things.:jester:

I've found a few tutorials via Google but none seem to work as easily as they describe, and they often use descriptors/terms for actions that I can't find anywhere in the programme...:bawl:

Would someone please be willing to provide a step-by-step numpty level tutorial on how to do this...please, please, please  - this Photoshop is killing me!

Cheers, TB

basically you need to take 2 photos of your car. both from exactly the same location, but one with the bonnet shut, the other with the bonnet open.

then open the picture with the bonnet open as a layer, then put the closed bonnet as another layer, on top of the previous layer.

use a oval shaped tool (or similar) and highlight the area of the motor.
up the top there should be a feather option choose whether you want a sharp edge or a feathered edge on the bonnet.

now hit the delete button. and you should have what you want.

its a bit hard to get the hang of, but once you figure it out you will be fine.

You can do it as above and get a good result.

Or, you can do it this way (http://www.devwebpro.com/see-through-car-engine-photo-effect/), and the result is a little ... errrr ... less good

Or you can go "old school". Cut a hole in your bonnet (angle grinder) and then buy a piece of perspex slightly larger than the hole.

Glue the perspex to the underside of the bonnet so it completely covers the hole and then wait until November and buy some spray cans of Santa Snow that you spray on your windows to make them look all frosty.

Spray a light coat on the perspex and you're done. Semi Opaque effect on your bonnet. :goodjob:

Hey mate,
Not that hard really.
Here's an example:
Open bonnet pic:

Now the final pic:

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn121/SSV8TE/see-through-bonnet_edited-2.jpg

What i did was resize the original pic to the same as the closed bonnet shot.
I overlayed the closed bonnet shot.
Then you go on to the opaque brush setting and make the closed bonnet shot the one you are editing by making it the second layer.
Then you just set the opaque at a percentage say 50% then drag your brush over the area's you want to be opaque and then you will see the engine slowly come through the top layer being the closed bonnet shot.
Bit of practice but it does get quite easy especially if i can do it
Best of luck mate,
Andy.

Clone tool on adobe,

take 2 pics off tripod

1 bonnet open
1 bonnet closed

open both pics in adobe next to each other

click where u want to clone then set transparancy to what u want in %

then click over closed bonnet revealing the bonnet open pic on the 2nd pic engine revealed:rofl:

im glad someone started a thread on this.. i never knew how do to it, and after a few of of you have stated how to do it, it doesn't seem to hard.

is photoshop the only program that you can do it with?

Gimp is an image processing program much loved by freeware users and Ubuntu fans. Apparently its not as intuitive as PS and a learning curve every bit as steep but I've never used it so I can't really comment.

I assume I was probably using the wrong method but i found digital lowering of cars far more difficult than the style of pic the OP requested
