Hey guys today i finally got my ls1 going with new springs, pushrods, cam and gaskets etc. But after the car warms up abit a ticking noice tends to surface.. Has anyone experienced this? anyone know what the possible problems are? i have changed the lifters to ls7 lifters also. And count out the coils and injectors cause they seem ok. Most of the noise is coming from the rear passenger side of the engine.

Extractors not torqued up properly, or gasket stuffed? Could either get noisier or quieter as motor warms up, depending on exact issue.

ok i will check it out. yeh cause the ticking is coming from the exact spot where it was prior to the lifter changeout

OK well this morning when i check the car, when its cold, oil is cold. The ticking/tapping noise seems to disappear. Weird i really aint sure wtf is going on.

i have pretty much the exact same problem. using castrol edge 10w-60 seems to have helped, but not solved the problem so i really don't know...

My Clubby is the same, I think it's been that way since I bought it, if not soon after. I wonder if it's when the oil warms up, it thins out, and lifters get noisy. I wouldn't mind it fixed, but don't want to spend plenty for a minor problem that you might not cure any way, and if you did, may well come back before very long. I've got nearly 90,000 km on it, engine was rebuilt about 38 thousand Kays. It's only done about 50,000 Km since rebuild.

Bit strange that there's a ticking even after you've new lifters put in... Does the ticking keep up with the revs? As in do they get quicker as you give it more revs....?

+1 on what Wonky said. What brand oil do you use?

Sounds like my issue which is in another thread for VE SSV's... Only once the engine has been running for about 1minute the issue goes. It happends every day...

I have had a complete engine rebuild and it came back, then had another set of lifters and now its come back after about 6,000klm. I am going to try Penrite HPR10 (10/50) as soon as I can. But I have to wait untill the holden rep makes another decision as to what going to be done about it. My engine is still under full warranty.

The noise has been independantly diagnosed by 4 engine centres as a problem in the valve train (i.e. lifters). Why is the 64million dollar question.

I am not sure why I need to run a heavier weight oil to stop the problem as others run the thin oil and dont have any such noise. I seem to still have good oil pressue etc. The only thing I can put it down to is more failing lifters or the oil pump maybe starting to fail.

Yeh seems to be a common thing, i ordered a new high volume oil pump, cause with the cam i got in its reading the oil pressure a little lower than usual. so i will try the oil pump out and if that dont work i will most likely try the lifters again. Its just weird, last night i could not hear it so i put a load on the engine (put in gear and stalled it) then the noise came back again

i had exactly the same problem in mine... so i did myself..

Recod heads...
lifters
rocker arms..
full VRS gasket kit..

and it still ticks when driving for about 10 mins... then goes away..

i will be changing the oil pump soon because they do wear out over time, could be the seal in the oil pickup tube, causing air to get sucked in with the oil instead of just sucking the oil through the pickup.. which will then cause less oil circulating around the lifters and the other parts of the engine..

oh also try Castrol edge 10w60 oil as this kinda helped my problem..

and sometimes the airco idler belt pulley will cause a ticking noise also

check oil pressure before you spend more money on trying to figure out what it may be.. as i wasted money on my problem lol..

Yeh i am looking at the mellings high volume/high pressure oil pump and see how that will go.

yeh well its actually got standard hsv exhaust on it.. i torque up the exhaust its got something to do with the oiling system, cause i changed the oil once and the noise went away.

How long did the noise go away for? Did you try a new oil?

Well it went away til the oil got hot, but today i finally finished up installing my new mellings oil pump, and out in castrol 10-60w oil. Seems to be working great, when hot, no foreign noise even when the car is warm and i rev her up. The oil pressure seems to be 2 higher pressure as well. So i reckon it was possibly oil pressure problems.. Cause the oil pressure switch while the car was warm and idling was reading about 1.0volts - 0.9 volts. But now when warm sits up to 2.0volts at idle... (if anyone dont know the oil pressure switch gives a 0-5volt reading)
