Hey Guys,

Last week i took my car in for a service and while it was there my mechanic snapped one of my rear passenger side wheel studs when getting my wheel off to change the brake pads. Therefore my car is running around atm on only 4 studs and nuts. Not a big problem but i have ordered the stud from Holden (they were out of stock).

The problem lies with the wheel nut, i have no spare so im trying to get the nut off the broken stud, its bloody hard! I've tried many different things now and i just cant get it off. The wheel nut is those allen key kind. I could just go buy a new set of wheel nuts but i dont really have time so i was hoping to just re-use this nut.

Any help will be appreciated. Myself and my mechanic are out of ideas even though it seems so simple.

Cheers.

If the stud was snapped when undoing adue to teh nut having grabbed, I don't like your chances of gettign the remaining stud out of the nut. :(

Sounds like the nut and stud have bound/welded/galled together. Any parallel thread should become loose again once the force has been removed as it's the opposing forces that make these threads grab (so for instance once you break the tension on wheel nuts they can be removed by hand the rest of the way). The fact that it's still tight is a bad sign.

Im sure there would be a stack of guys with 4 spare nuts due to putting lock nuts on. Maybe u could ask that question or better still put another set of lock nuts on(I know u said ya havent got time to get them)

I'd give a tyre shop a go mate if not a wrecker.

 $40k+ SSV and you wont spend $1 on a new wheel nut....

If you were local id help you out. Surely you could order one from Holden? I annually change all the nuts for new ones, got a box full of em.

I think by the sound of it he has aftermarket wheel nuts that can't be bought separately. I assume you have aftermarket wheels hence the aftermarket wheel nuts? If not its a bit of a no no using non genuine nuts on genuine wheels

check ebay, as there are all sorts of nuts for sale, even the genuine ones,

for locknuts

Sorry guys i should have been clearer.

I drive a VZ (SSV is on the to buy list) with aftermarket rims.

Id probably have to buy a set of wheel nuts, or get real lucky that a tyre place has one random allen key style nut for these rims lying around.

After having a crack today i dont think im going to get it off but i thought asking here would be worth a shot. Some people may think its funny or that im just being a tight arse but being a professional means i only have time to buy things on weekends. Tyre shops are open when i am at work!!!

Looks like i might have to wait till next weekend to get some wheel nuts and get this rim off and fix the broken stud.

P/S - I already have locknuts on my rims, the nut that is stuck is a normal wheel nut.

Would heating it up work?

One question. Why isn't the place that did your service and broke the stud. Fixing this?

Your'e looking for a normal nut ? they should be easy topick up for a vz, I wouldn't be bothered with the tight one it's obviously cross threaded and if you use it ,it will probably happen again.

He has ordered a new stud and tried to get the nut off so he gave it to me to have a crack but yeah im pretty sure its not worth the hassel now. Its just a time issue, knowing it'll now have to wait to next w/e.

I'll try and see if my dad has time to swing by a tyre place and get another nut like this/another set if they dont have one lying around.

Cheers to the people who tried to help :)

Put it in a vice and first try spin it on a bit further to crack the tension. Then wind it off.

Did ya vice it at the allen key end with the key in it???
....... if it is binding the slightest pressure from the vice will defeat you????

I had the stud in the vice and was turn the nut with the key and it didnt budge...i started to think im either going to wreck the key or the nut. Just not worth it.

I started the thread just in case someone had a method i hadnt tried to date but like i said its better just to buy/get a new wheel nut.

Cheers :)

Drill a hole through the stud wide enough to fit a metal dowel into it, put that into the vice and burst your fuffa until it comes off.

you could always try drilling a hole into the stud (this will be hard) with a pedistal drill and the nut in a vice.

then jam an allen key in the hole (use a hammer) and try to get it out.

short of that you could try drilling two holes in the stud.

whip up a tool with a couple of pins on a piece of angle iron and try to undo it.

short of that i think you're stuffed.

File the remaining thread on opposite sides so you have a 2 flat/opposite surfaces to work with i.e. so a vice can hold em. Whack the bugger in the freezer overnight or for a day. Take it from the freezer, put in vice(flat sides) then with an oxy heat up the nut hot!...then try to unscrew usin rattle gun etc...but dont heat too much you want the nut to expand before the threads...or you could drill up the centre of the stud several times until it is weak enough to pry out/collapse....or get pissed off, throw it across the room and blame the wife...

mate just drill and the punch it out need to be actrurate but (sorry not good speller) then away you go shouldn't take you any more than a 30min once you have the nut off if not a trye shop will have one or try covs

Has anyone mentioned that even if you get the nut off the broken stud, the thread in the nut will be rooted anyway, that's what's made it tight .... Throw it in the bin, bite the bullet and buy new ones. And btw, a missing wheel nut is a bigger concern than you might think. In NSW it is a defect and will be treated as such by most driving white SS's with party lights on the roof.
