Does anyone in Brisbane know of someone who does top work on painting mags. I know a lot of guys have had their mags painted so hopefully someone who has had theirs done for a while so they can comment on how the painted finish wears. I have also been told to go the painting route and not powdercoat but does anyone have experience with this
I am also not sure on the colour to go for and welcome any input on this. I've stuck a picture of the ole girl up and am trying to work out if to go black (like just about everyone else) :) or to go white (bit like the Brock VK Blue Meanie)

Also seeking some advice on tyres. I need to replace my 20" and have been given the following quote on 245/35/20 (these prices are not fitted)
Kumho KU31 $214
Federal SS595 $175
Federal 595 EVO $231
I have heard good reports with the KU31 but haven't heard anything on the other 2. If anyone has first hand experience with these, the type of info I am chasing is road noise, level of grip, wear e.g. roughly what can I expect to get out of these
Cheers

gey mate do not ever bother with fedral tyres they are just cheap
crap. after around 20,000kms the fedral tyre side walls start crack and eventuly
blow out if a severe crack is there. we have only ever fitted 1 set at work due to that and we will never have them in stock or fit them. save you cash and go kuhmo or toyo saty clear from fedral
cheers

Have a mate with a wrx and got his rims powder coated for not a small amount! He wouldn't EVER do it again. Slightest stone chip and it flakes off and you can see the, all white, underneath it. On dark coloured rims it stands out like the proverbial.
I have the same coloured SS as yours and am looking at painting mine in a charcoal etc colour, but am wary of it "lasting".
I'm tossing up between getting the SS rims done or buying some nice black/charcoal rims for $1,000.
Let me know what you're getting charged for the job if you go the painting route.
Me? I'd not go white. Brake dust etc wil drive you insane. Dark colour I reckon (my personal taste I know).

cheers Always amazes me - Blokes spend a fortune on their car, then a fortune on mods, and go and put the cheapest crap tyres on them....
They are the only things that keep you out of the scenery - doesn't matter how good a driver you are or how good a car you have, if you've got crap tyres you are asking for trouble...:bawl:
Ferchrisakes, buy the best tyres you can, not the cheapest.

If it were me Tone Id be buying a can of Supercheaps finest Septone matte black and do them yourself. Powdercoating im let to believe harms the metal ingrety and is not reccomended. Painting will still be affected by stonechips and to me forking out a couple of hundred compared to doing it yourself and them needing doing again in 6 months time doesnt add up to me.

Ive had my rims sandblasted and powdercoated in satin black and the finish is very good to say the least. Have had them done for a good 3-4 months now at least and have not had any dramas at all with stone chips, havent faded at all.
I've also got 2 of the Kumho's on my car, mind you in 19", but find them a very good tyre, great grip in the wet, minimal road noise. The only downside I have of them is that I believe Im probably going to be lucky to get 25,000kms out of them, and that is with no burnouts, drags, etc.

I've had my wheels painted in 2pac gloss black, I love the look of them but I'm not happy with the finish on them and they mark so easy. Im thinking of trying powdercoat on them to see if it's any better.

Um I dunno about the above Zorak... will scratch off awefully easily and look crapola.
Had my SSV rims 2pak'ed n baked in semi-gloss black. They look awesome, and have not even the slightest of marks on them after about 5 months driving.
I wouldnt powder-coat for the reasons above - will get big chunks come off if knocked/stones etc.
Personally Tone... dont go white!

Mate,
A few of the performance shops recommend Depulu Wheels on the Gold Coast, and I've seen a number of good reports on the forum, http://www.depuluwheels.com/index.html

prepped properly, undercoated and given a few coats will be fine. done this on a mates drifter and a couple of other cars.
white would go well, only issue I see would be brake dust caking on and not coming off would ruin the look

Thanks for that and all the other replies. I sent Depulu an e-mail asking for an estimate.

Hi Seldo. Don't know where you got the idea that I am after cheap and nasties. I think you will find the prices quoted for the KU31 are very good and they would cost quite a bit more from some of the larger tyre dealers.
Given I got about 48000 km's out of the factory 20" Bridgestones with a nice even wear across the whole of the tread surface I guess I would be classified as not overly hard on my tyres. Then again checking they have 40 psi in them every week and rotating them every 5000 km's probably helps a bit as well.
I have seen numerous comments on how good a tyre the KU31 is with value for money. As for the other two, I found these are used by a lot of drift guys so thought they would probably have a high grip level and also assumed they would wear very quickly (no big deal if they stick like the proverbial to a blanket) but as I don't know anyone who has used them on a VE I asked the question.
Judging by the replies I received plus a few pm's I think I will just go for the Kumho KU31. I've never worried about grip in the wet before as like you I am in Brissie but given our latest weather maybe I should be looking at full race wets :eeeeek:
I'm with you when it comes to having decent tyres and also brakes. The new LS series motors offer easy and relatively cheap HP but it is also nice to be able to stop and go round corners.
Cheers mate

Thanks Adam. I might just drop in and see him and see what he recommends. Any chance of e-mailing me a couple of pics of your painted rims plus as I have been out of the 'scene' for about 12 months any pics of extra mods you have done

If I am honest, I would ring him first to confirm he is there.
I'll send an email with some pics but I have put some on here. Most current ones here.

Cheers mateSorry Tone - it just seemed that you listed up a choice of 3 crap tyres, and - as stated - I find it strange that some people spend all this money on their cars and then scrimp on brakes and tyres. In my book, I spend the money on tyres, brakes and suspension first, in that order, ....then comes the power.
FWIW - I've used Depulu, and whilst they are competent, I think they are exxie - cost me over $1k for 4. Having said that - I've also not found anyone better yet....But looking...
Also - you state that you don't worry about the wet....... That's all I worry about since the occassion where I approach the limit in the dry is very rare these days...but the wet can sneak up on you...
Cheers

I paid $700 to have my 4 wheels 2pak'd at Steven Goodall Panel Beaters.
Top notch job. Top notch people too.

Was that anything special mate. Colour or paint I mean. I paid half that for gloss black. A mate paid slightly more than that for satin.
I am rapt as well. It does depend on the paint chosen.

Nothing special... had one getting repaired at time because of a bingle - so got the other 3 done as well.

Depulu sent me an estimate to get them done in 2 pack, baked, gloss black centre with a machined band (clear over the top), 3 day turn around at $165 per rim. Their web site reads well. It was also their suggestion to go for the gloss black with machined lip rather than the white.
Thanks to all for your help and suggestions

I own a smash repair shop and we regularly send damaged rims to Depulu down the gold coast and to Mag It also on the coast. Turnaround time is 3 days minimum with either shop. They both do buckled rims, machining and paint. Like most places I have seen good and bad jobs come out of both. Most of the time the wheels do come up really good. Expect to pay anywhere upto $150 a rim to have them painted at a panelshop.
Cheers Matt
