out of fun, test drove the fg xr6t turbo and i have to say never impressed. these autos compared to holden are out of this world. gear changes are smooth, doesnt gear down when you back off and alot faster than the ve. so as a holden owner, what do you think of these cars.
personally, probably the best car to mod for the money. fg with tune 270 rkws and 600plus torque.

Was a one eyed Holden man til I jumped in my FG. Love everything about it, everyone I've showed the car to has been blown away by it and they're all Holden boys. VE has a better chassis but my stock suspension FG still out handles my old VZ with suspension work and they really need Brembo's stock. The standard 'premium brakes' aren't too flash.
Luxury pack in them is a must as is the ZF box. That's my review. :)

I know of a few ve ss auto drivers that have had they're autos "re-tuned" and love them now. My previous ride was a vy ss, and there is a big difference between the vy and ve; the ve just handles better and i feel more confident in it. Also, the 6.0 ltr pumps out more power than 5.7; mine with tune, extractors and OTR is around the 265 rwkw mark.
As for a driving a turbo 6, i guess it comes down to personal taste; you cant beat the sound and grunt of a v8. Last week, i had a rip shift installed at NJC, and Tuffie took my car for a quick spin to "break it in" :) while i was standing outside at Nick's garage. It was the first time i heard my car being thrashed while not in it; and f#$@ me dead, it sounded great.
I drive both a VE SS & FG XR6T regularly. The XR6T is a great bit of kit, acceleration on the roll is just devastating. The gearbox is literally world class, used in audis, maserati etc. BUT compared to the SS I don't find it as fun. I'm not sure what it is, maybe just the fact that the turbo is so good at what it does, it's almost clinical. Put the foot down, it accelerates with fury. Hit the brake, it stops. That's what it does, and it does it a little too well. The SS has character, that instant torque with no lag, the beautiful sound, the better seats, better driving position, the interior wraps around you. I feel like a big kid in the SS. In the turbo I feel more like a hardcore speed freak and not necessarily in a good way. When you're having fun in the turbo, you're breaking the law. Give the turbo 1/2 to 3/4 throttle on the roll and it's the same as flat footing the SS. It's good for winning races, but nothing beats the character of a fat V8 in my opinion, you can have fun in the SS just cruising.

I got my FG turbo in '08. Its done 63000kms now.
I have really enjoyed owning the car, if you want sheer speed for your money this is the car for you!!
I think the only thing lacking is the exhaust note.... having said that mine is a manual and you can play some fun games with induction note, turbo spool and blow off (yes you can hear the stock blow off in the car......just)
I am a big 6'2 guy and I do a lot of highway kms. I find the car very comfortable, I also find the mix of handling and ride quite acceptale for me ... I dont take my cars to the track.
The weak point in the car has been the diff bushes .... I go through a set every 25000kms so I will be due for some more at 75000kms !!!!!!
I have been getting them replaced under warranty with the same crappy ford bushes each time (Ford wont fit uprated ones and I am not paying to supply them!!)....but I know of some people that have gone out and bought aftermarket bushes and resolved the problem.
I really want a V8 for my next car, the FPV GS looks crappy and the GT is out of my price range, so I looked at the SS, drove one the other week and was left stone motherless cold by how slow it was!!
So I am looking to get an HSV, and only because I am used to the performance of my Turbo. ( I am not interested in modding my cars).
I want a car with at least equal straightline performance and a V8 rumble ..... guess what ... thats an HSV not an SS :) :)

If the GT is out of your price range, how on earth do you afford a HSV?
I also prefer the V8 sound but the VE HSV is a heavy bugger and in stock form, not re-noun for fast launches.

GT is in hot demand at the moment, its selling for more than 74,000, no discounts out there........ and I have an uncle who is a Ford dealer....
Plenty of floor stock E2 Clubsports or Maloo's out there for low 60's .... gotta love HSV tacking on some new bits of plastic every year or so making the resale pummet :)

Slow? A stock SS is actually slightly faster than a stock XR6T according to the times reported in the car mags. Turbocharged cars often feel faster due to the way they deliver power.

Haha...touche!
Ford do make a pretty good car though...I've driven them in the past. But if you love something (or someone) then that allows you to see past any potential flaws or faults it might have...I'll always love my Holden...no matter what...

Agreed the FG XR6T is definatley a sweet ride I have been lucky enough to swap my ssv ute wth a guy I work with just for laughs, and have to admit that I was pleasently surprised. As someone else stated its definatley all in the power delivery, as linear as Ford has made the arrival of boost its still a completley different kettle of fish. The Auto is super slick and thats definatley the route I would be going if I were to buy a F@#rd but the seating position reminds of sitting on a VL again. Literally F@#rd falcons feel like your sitting on the car rather than in it.
There really isnt much in it performance wise both great cars just deliver it in a slightly different manner.

why cant holden with all the development that went into the ve get a proper box. is it money issues, dont know. but if the ve had a zf box, this would be ultimate

Ive had no issues with my box, granted at one service they reflashed the ECU or some shit to change the shift points or some malarkey, but other than that, it does what it is supposed to do...
Those who want there box to upshift/downshift exactly when they want it should have got themselves an M6, not an auto.

I'd say that GM had a hand in that and most likely pretty seriously insisted that the GM box was used.

Errr no..... this has been proven time and again by stock Turbos running sub 13's or low 13's at the drags and beating stock HSV's.......
Plus I believe wheels or motor got a 13.1 outta the G6E T same day they got a mid 13 out of the Calais V V8........
Like I said I am in the market for a new car..... been out there driving the options ..... the SS is slow in comparison..... sorry.
Still I want a V8 this time 'round :) So its looking like it will be team red :)

Seat of the pants you wont be able to tell the difference between a 13 second run or a 13.5 second run. The turbo power delivery is very different which is where the feeling of power comes from. You could have the power go from 50kw to 300kw in 1000rpm and light the tyres every time, but it's still only making 300kw.

Well clearly notoroius benny has the ability to deciphre the difference. His ass is very sensitive!

The other thing to remeber is that the turbo has suprisingly large amounts of torque down low that the (stock) V8 can't match. But hey, who cares about low rpm. Drag races are all about high rpm

mmmm, not sure about that. Stock FG turbos have beaten me before quite easily. Haven't gone up against a FG F6 as yet but not sure I want too!:bawl:

Someone I know through another forum went from a mid 90's WRX to an FG XR6T with the ZF box and was more than happy with the 13.007 he did with full weight, 1/2 a tank and stock 19" dealer fitted option rims at the WA Motorplex. For a factory car ~$50k, straight out of the box, that is impressive.
The SS is slow, so shut ya face!! :)
Farkin LOL
EDIT: I was close, just checked it, this is his signature -> [DEDLYWEPN] - FG XR6 Turbo - 13.008 @ 108mph, stock standard with 19's and a full tank!

Yikes!! I didnt want to start a fist fight!!
Dont get me wrong, there are things I do like about the VE SS, its comfy to drive, and I reckon its a good looking car, its certainly not a 'slow' car , especially if comparing it too a Boss XR8 ..... now thats an annoying car to drive!!
But to drive them back to back you can indeed tell the difference by your bum!! Thing is the stop watch confirms the bum.
Over the 1/4 the difference is only a few tenths, but out bush where I live miles away from a drag strip ... or even a set of lights! its not how quick my car is from a standstill that I care about ... its how fast I can pass that B double in front of me :)
I am used to the massive roll on thrust that the turbo has ....... and my bum tells me clearly the SS dosnt have the same...... especially in the higher gears.

That's the only thing that would really stop me buying a Ford, apart from the ext styling. The driving position reminds me of an old Fiat. The steering is off-centre and the seating is just plain wrong compared to the Holden.
The Ford engines were once a big let down but that's the case no more. Ford are now leading in the engine department. But as much as I want to love the Fords, I can't commit to ownine one. It's a pity because the cars are at leasgt as good as the Holdens, just different.

We have both Holden and Ford sitting in the garage.
Wife's stock standard G6E Turbo ran 13.0 @ 107mph on the factory 19"s and also gets exceptional fuel economy. You are not going to do that in a standard SS or HSV.
However seat of the pants it feels a lot slower than it its quarter mile time.
Slow? A stock SS is actually slightly faster than a stock XR6T according to the times reported in the car mags. Turbocharged cars often feel faster due to the way they deliver power.
You really shouldn't be comparing cars through random times in car mags. Someone had done a 12.59 STOCK quarter in an XR6T, timeslip and all.

The auto is a much smoother unit and much more intelligent than the Holden unit whilst left in Drive, when driven in selective shift the Holden will blip the throttle on downchanges to match revs to gears (like heel toeing).
When i test drove on i couldn't get over the driveline shunt you got when backing of under heavy throttle applications (dealer said it was g forces).
And i have said it before that damn driving position blows as does the standard chain mail cloth interior :spew: IMHO
