hi all
I know ve's have a sensor before the cat and one after to read exhaust temps. By gutting the cat and putting a straight pipe through the middle will this have any affect on anything.
i guessing the penalty will be the same as using 100cell cats

no one would ever know if you gutted your cats...
and if you got an epa notice just change back to normal cats...

Dont gut the cats, it smells horrible, and any cop worth their salt will know exactly what you have done.

not a too good idea, i wouldnt sudjest it at all, for the time and effort to make a fool proof set of cats that look real but have no inside you may aswell buy a nice set of ballistic cats.
if you get caught its a hefty fine :(

100cpsi cats are illegal as they don't filter as well as the emissions standard requires, but they filter a hell of a lot better than nothing at all. You can smell a car running without cats a mile away, and you can hear it. There is no performance difference between running quality high-flow cats and gutted cats, why risk it and turn your car into a beater at the same time?

easy to get busted, infared temp gun aimed on the body of the cats will show up the empty cat real quick.

Even hiflow cats burn out to a point where there hollow anyway.. Depends on your tune and how much power you make but I've had quality hiflow cats last few months then it's back to shooting flames again

anyone got any advice on a sideline issue i have encountered...
have a full system, up until recently comprisded of xforce headers, balistic 100 cats and a set of 2.5" xforce cat backs. Running mafless tune and worked a treat.
Copped damage to one of the cats and decided to upgrade to magnaflow stainless steel 2.5" cats. I am told they are 200's.
My issue now is that the car backfires on the downchange and even coming off a feathered throttle. Also getting 02 sensor codes.
Driving me insane.
Going back to my tuner asap for some checks but would appreciate your .02c in the meantime.

I would suggest that if ever you got done for them (and it seems they can be fairly easily detected) the courts would take a much dimmer view of someone who had gone out of their way to deliberately flout the law than someone who had put working cats on, even at 100cpsi, and would fine you much more substantially.
Not worth the risk IMHO.

I was told they are better quality, flow better than the 100s and are Euro 4 standard.
What havent they told me?

100cell flow better than 200 not the other way around. I think his taking you for a ride

The Euro 4 standard bit may be right but from a physics point of view I can't see how they could flow better. Quality I can't really comment on except to say I know lots of guys with the Ballistics on all manner of machines inc FI and haven't heard of one failure, whereas I've heard of quite a few on XForce and DF cats.

In short ... the magnaflow 200s flow better than OEM supply CATS but not as well as 100s ... HOWEVER ARE LEGAL and Euro 4 compliant.
It's then up to the punter to decide which they value more. Improved flowing, compliant CATs or the highest flowing not quite so compliant CATs.
In respect to gutting CATs ... the car will STINK and sound very tinny. Not worth the arsing about.

They sound pretty bad gutted, have heard them on VT-VEs and are shocking. Also crackle and fart on decel witht he run off.
In all honesty why would you bother changing from standard on a street car?

i had piped cats on my vx. didnt really make much more performance, but it did sound good.
also got defected more than once, and got more than one road worthy for it, and they never picked up on the cats.
it took a bit of stuffing around to make it look right, but now with the ballistic cats on the market, you wouldnt waste you time stuffing around with piped cats.

If for argument sake you had two 100cpi cats in your hand but one was a 5" body and the other one was a 3" version, would there be a difference in performance flow characteristics? What are the benefits of running a smaller or larger size bodied cat of similar cell characteristics?

According to figures I remember seeing in Sureflo's sponsor's section the larger body cats flow better. That's why Badseed went to the trouble of getting 4.5" body cats fitted on his VE. I also think I remember reading that Sureflo now have 4.5" body Ballistics that will fit the VE without modification.

i was lookin on evil bay, and there are 100cpi cats avalible that have a euro 3 rating, not sure if its true, but if they are avalible, it might be a good and leagle option.

ill see how my stock hsv cats go with the cam this weekend, if its no good ill give these a try.

No ones mentioned anything about the environment so I will...every high-flow cat..is doing us damage :1peek:
I'm most of the other mods done to the car are illegal as well just put a stright through pipe in the cat. They get a lottt of crackle on the decelleration and you might even get the occasional flame fly out if the noise isn't enough attention.

So is the crackle predominantly a feature of running hi flo cats? Will the crackle be more apparent with say 100cpi cats as opposing to 200cpi versions?

What about HSV cats?
I have HSV cats fitted to mine (VX) and picked up 12 RWKW just by having them fitted when it still had the standard tune.
I know the VT-VY II HSV cats have larger intake and exit pipes than standard are VE the same? as in do they have larger openings too
Also what mods (have/are going to) been done ?
