Picked it up Saturday morning.

Alto Grey
M6
E85 compatable
Onyx/Razor Leather
Sat Nav

Wish I got the redline pack now for the brembo's but this will do for now.

Planned mods are:
1 7/8" headers, 2.5" system, stock tips
Xcal3 E85/98/91 tune
OTR intake
Lower it a shitload, matched spring/shock combo (still researching this)
Wheels (20x8.5 & 20x10)
Tints
Bee sting aerial.
Ripshift

This will be MOTOR magazines new long term test guinea pig so hopefully get some good data/performance from the car and show off some local products and their performance gains.

Couple of things I've noticed, drives real nice but clutch pickup point is very low, can this be adjusted at all? seems like it takes up about an inch off the carpet, I'd prefer it a bit higher.

Heaps of torque, love the fact you can take off in second, short shift to 4th then pop into 5th and that will cover from 30kph to 100+ very broad and grunty. Surprisingly tough sound for stock, sounded tits in the M5 tunnel :yup:

Can't post any photos yet, need to get 20 post despite being a member here for years :bawl:

I'm a photographer for a crust, so there is going to heaps of snaps of this car to come :)

Any insight or thoughts on the planned mods I have would be good, I'm planning to have Dale at Castle Hill Exhaust do a majority of the work.

I'd PM it to you mate but I need 20 post, maybe just maybe this will be enough to hit 20, let me check.

Edit: no good, once I hit 20 I'll definately drop you a PM :)

I took it for a run through the National Park today, I'm in love. 3rd gear just eats up the road and has the balls to take slow corners or long sweepers. Brilliant.

I find the car doesn't like to brake during cornering, even trail braking unsettles the car at 8/10ths, will be looking to rectify this with suspension goodies.

Clutch is becoming better by the Km, much better now than when I first picked it up, perhaps I'm getting used to it.

Still not 100% sure on these brakes, but I'll reserve full judgement until more km's are put on.

I picked up my white Redline last week. Had it dropped and got rid of the shocking redline wheels on the way home from the dealer.

Will be watching this thread :)

Nice, what rims did you get? I'm having trouble finding rims I like the look of with an agressive enough width/offset to have some concave. The search continues.

I'll try get a photo up for you mate.

They're the size your after, with 245/35/20 and 275/30/20 out back.
Mines the redline, so I have slightly less options than you will because of caliper clearance with the Brembo's.

King ultra low springs brought it down just enough, and the ride is acceptable.

Will probably slot in some new shocks eventually, but for now its fine.

ahh nice, yeah a photo would be good.

Heres a quick snap I took whilst doing some "shakedown" testing on my favourite stretch of road in the Royal National Park :)

I'd disagree. I'm running a full hurricane system with 1 7/8" headers, 3" hi-flow cats, dual 3" system, ramjet and Xcal3 with E85 tune and it's perfect. Makes 290kW at the wheels with solid gains at low and mid rpm.

The 6 litres seem more than able to get good gains from the larger headers and exhaust systems where as the old 5.7's would lose a little low down.

Say 2 dirt bikes and gearbags? Approx 240-260kg?

And this Alto Grey is just as nice. Reminds me a bit of platinum.

At least if you have coilovers you can jack the @rse up if you're going to take the bikes out.

If it's already dumped then another 250 kgs might have you kissing bumpstops

Coilovers should be better for carrying weight than if you go for a shock and spring combo because they're adjustable. If you have low ride height with shock and spring then load her up and your on the stops then there's not much you can do. At least if that happens with coilovers you can wind some more height in and adjust the dampening to suit.

I plan on loading my road bike + gear into the back of my ute for track days. I'm going to see how I go with one bike and gear (around 200kg). If there's no problems I might even see if I can get a mates bike on as well (will probably need a fair amount of adjustment as that'll be around 400kg in the back plus 180kg+ in the cab). That might be starting to push the envelope but you can only try.... :)

I'm looking at buying some ramps now.

Thanks to Pedders Bankstown, new XA coil-overs were installed today. Did a quick blast through the Royal national park in the arvo and the handling is transformed! Sits so flat and firm through sweepers to slow hairpins. Only thing holding this car back is brakes. Went mushy after a while. Overall I'm rapped with the suspension. Massive thanks to Pedders for their support with this product.

perhaps lower the rear a little more, maybe the front too but not as much to level it out but looks fantastic

brasher
14-12-2010, 04:59 PM
yeah the front sits a bit high, I need it like that to make it up the driveway at home :) This weekend I'm going to measure it at it's lowest and then calculate how much lower I can go.

Already scraped it on the big speedhump at work today, what would have taken the hit? Was only minor.

mad_industries
14-12-2010, 08:00 PM
depends where it hit?
front = wouldve been the under plastic behind the front bar
middle = most likely an exhaust flange??
rear = possibly the exhaust under the diff if it wasnt a full width speedhump

just take things on an angle and youll be set ;)

Normally the exhaust. Did it sound like a metallic scraping sound? My exhaust has gone to war with my driveway since the coilovers went in. Have to wind the rear up a bit I think... :)

Today was a good day, picked it up from Dale at Castle Hill Performance and still have a grin on my face.

Had the following fitted thanks to some terrific support from some great Aussie companies.

KPM full 2.5 inch stainless system
GM Motorsport Ramjet intake
GM Motorsport Ripshift
SCT X-cal 3 tune Box.

Stock it made 218rwkw and torque was dipping after 4000rpm.

Dyno tuned by Dale, it made 261.7rwkw and a fat 600Nm of torque that stretches a broad rev range  I'm stoked! It sounds amazing and goes like the clappers :goodjob:

Thanks mate,

I'll put the graphs up tonight.

The figure was made on E85, made slightly less on 98.

I have 3 tunes on the box.
E85
P98
Stock

Amazingly the stock made 256rwkw with E85! So the base Holden Tune is pretty good. The fuel put in it was Caltex's Winter Blend (from a barrell) Dale ensures me with Summer Blend it should have a bit more in it.

I should note, we left the MAF in the Ramjet. It's such a new car that I didn't think it would be wise to be running it MAFless incase of warranty.

Oh, and it sounds ridiculously tough, added a bit of a lope at idle. The sound is mint. It's not really deep but a more raspy wail akin to C63. I love it!

Glad your happy Chris,

the tunes in Chris Xcal are a straight 98 octane and straight E85 tune, the a tune that will allow mixed blends similar to what the stock tune allows so if Chris has 1/4 tank and needs to fill up he can swap to that tune for that tank of fuel.

so he has the best of both worlds!

Not meaning to digress off topic- just getting my head around that one! Just to clarify for my simple brain- is E85 tune specifically for the 85% stuff and the 'a' tune is stock tune which can handle a blend of everything?

Also how empty does the tank have to be before filling up on the e85 and using the tune?

yep the e85 tune is for the caltex eflex fuel, the 98 tune is for straight 98 and the "stock" tune is for mixed tanks..

i would suggest if possible to run the tank to about 1/8 and then fill up with the different fuel..

Yep, the X-cal3 holds 3 tunes, so at the moment I have a full tank of corn juice so Im on the E85 map, say for example I get down to half a tank and then top it up with 98 octane I then switch to the "stock" tune on the box and it will run that mixture no problem.

As for how empty, probably would be best to do it as empty as possible, less than an 1/8th perhaps before switching to another fuel.

Can always switch to the stock tune till it Dilutes even more and then switch it to the right tune. Best of Both worlds as Dale said.

It only takes about 2 mins to swap tunes, did it myself this arvo and I'm technically capable as a jellyfish

There is only 1 map on the stock ECU, and a sensor that can determine the content of the fuel in the tank at the time, it adjust to suit.

So I have 3 tunes, the stock one (modified a bit) a pure 98 and pure E85.

Only ever ran it on E85 though, cheap as chips :goodjob:

Reason for 2.5 inch was the car is a daily, wasn't keen on a very loud car that would wake my neighbors up with my irregular work hours.

If the need arises, I'll go bigger but not for a while, very happy with the KPM system

I'm in the process of sourcing some new wheels for this car, I want something that will be super agressive but fit without too much modifications, leaving me really the only option to fit BMW wheels and run some hubcentric spacers.

OK, so this 256rwkw was with exhaust and e85 juice only...so NO tune mods at all??

Reason I ask is because I had VCM OTR & KPM 3" installed yesterday, running Caltex e85 and unfortunately didn't have a factory stock base run as time was limited, but it pulled a 259.8rwkw followed by a 259.9rwkw straight after.

Using my KPM supplied tunes in the XCAL box...I managed a 262.2 with the 98 tune...oddly the e85 tune resulted in a best of 257.6 or something...very strange???

Funnily enough I've been keenly watching the progress with this ute in every MOTOR mag that's come out. Here it is! I just purchased a SII Redline SSV sedan and also went down the 2.5" KPM route. Now looking to do pedders coilovers XAs as the FE3 in the redlines leave you able to stick 4 fingers between the tyre and the guards... :S

How are the coilovers going? Have you played with the shock settings and found a good mix? Been researching heaps and only want to do quality mods; you seem to be on the ball picking some quality gear.

After you've found some wheels, whats next?!

Photo's look great btw!!

Thanks, good to see someone following the build.

Looking at VMR V710 Wheels in 19's 8.5 inch front and 9.5 inch rear +30 front offset and +35 rear. Should fill out the guards nice and sit flush.

Brakes will then be done, looking at Harrop Ultimate kit, I'm still researching brakes.

Then after a few months will be back to CHE for a Cam and Retune. Loving the E85, cheap as chips and getting good mileage and power.

Out of curiosity...what sort of milage are you getting with e85?

I had mine custom tuned at KPM last week with an end result of 277rwkw on e85 & 271rwkw on 98.

I am still on the 98 but will switch to the e85 tune next I fill up & see how it goes. I was averaging 13.4L/100km on the highway (2 up, full boot) with e85 and about 17L/100km around the city before the custom tune.

getting 16.7L per 100 on E85 or roughly 450km's depending on how I drive. Can get this easily into the 15's if taken easily.

was getting high 12's with 98 octane, however I have not put the car back on 98 since getting the tune done, 98 should be lower again on 98.

E85 is getting pricey though, paid $1.25 a litre last Saturday.

Best thing is exhaust looks brand new, no carbon buildup. :goodjob:

Any updates mate?

I just got the pedders coilovers installed on my SII SSV! Not a bad bit of kit. As you said, it feels much tighter on the road now!

What have you set the rebound/bump settings to? I'm currently running 23front/15rear and it seems to be a happy medium. Had it on 25/25 and it was a bit too bouncy for normal roads.

15Front and 10Rear at the moment because I've just been using it to get to and from work, nice and comfortable. Click it up a few notches if I go somewhere good on the weekend and want it a bit firmer.

I'll have to give that combo a go. I'm curious to see how they change in feel. Cheers mate.

Nah mate not really, just enjoying driving it still.

Have bought E1 GTS rims and will get them done in a sort of Matte Charcoal colour soon, whilst I'm there I'll do the brakes, the Brembo 4pots from the redline look like a good well priced upgrade.

Then it's saving for a HTV1900 or cam, still undecided but the blower sounds more inviting :woot:

Still getting good economy from the E85 as a daily, 15.7L/100 seems about the normal, cost bang on $70 to fill up so it's not too bad at all.

I'd definitely recommend the brembos! Great bang for buck I think.

The GTS' will look great! Good choice with colour.

15.7s a bit in the highish side, your average km must be under 50?

Tough choice with blower v cam. Good luck with it!

thanks, note that those fuel economy figures are on Caltex E-Flex fuel, not 98

Yeah I'm aware! I was averaging 13.5 on E-Flex @ 60km/h avg.

bit of an update for this thing, both times was in the right place at the right time and grabbed some bargains.

Got a set of ADV.1 5.1's in 19x8.5 +28 front and 19 x9.5 +30 rear fitment.

All research led me to beleive that this would be a pain in the ass to fit and work, but after a guard roll and bumper bracket trim all is good and no scrubbing at all.

You might recognise these wheels as the same ones on the Walkinshaw SSV "supercar" they are the same design but these are 19's vs 20's, and these have MUCH more concave and aggressive offset.

Falken Azensis 245/35's all round, very good tyre.

Also scored some 4 pot Redline brembo's from Thompson Holden.

http://holmart.com.au/online/images/brembo7large.jpg

Next, will matt black plastidip the front grille badge and add a SSV redline badge on the tailgate.

Lower the car another 30mm all round and I'm happy for a bit :)

Wheels look good mate! I'm surprised how nicely the 19s look in the guards. The stock Holden 19s, due to the offset, don't have the same appeal.

brasher
04-10-2012, 04:55 PM
yep thats right, It's all in the offset :)

When I first got the rims I was a bit dissapointed, they looked tiny in black, once the tyres were mounted and suspension settled it brought a smile to my face :)

Quick PS of how I want it to sit (maybe not this low)

It takes me ages to get into the work driveway as it is haha, I'm thinking 10-15mm between guard and tyre and making some skid plates for the cats lol.

Good day today got a lot done.

Got the brakes fitted at Dales This morning, Heaps of clearance.

Stops unbeleivable now, and will only get better as they bed in. Very happy.

Dipped the grille badge and put on SSV redline rear tailgate badge, looks much better. Also deleted E85 badge from Tailgate.

Haha thanks mate, I travel to melb a fair bit for work. Could be arranged.

I am very happy with how it turned out, the exterior mods are done for now. I was thinking of doing a very small CF front lip, CF mirror caps and CF wrapping the roof though maybe.

Just needs another ~100rwkw now.
