lost 2nd gear on a 4L60E

hey all,

So up until now my stock standard 4L60E has been handling the power from the cam ect (265rwkw) but has now decided to partly shit itself. Long story short, i was cruising at 60Ks or so and booted it, the box dropped down to 2nd gear and then instantly hit limiter and just sat there bouncing off it, and not going into 3rd, at which point i manually put it into 3. Now it will not go into 2nd gear at all. From a stop start it will rev out 1st until it can go into 3rd, and when at cruising speed it wont drop back to 2nd, only 1st(if possible) or nothing. Basically it has lost 2nd gear, but only 2nd gear.

What could be the cause for this? Ive been told that it cant be the band as i still have a perfectly fine working 4th gear. I will be ringing around some gearbox shops tomorrow arvo when i get time, but curious to see if anyone else has had the same problem, and what it was exactly.

The cause? treating a box like shit! that and they are weak as piss, anyway, your up for a rebuild, either that or a bandaid

the exact same thing happened to mine...
however, the car was stock with a couple of bolt-ons... and, being a VY II HSV, it had the 4L65E box... but anyway...

the problem: second gear evaporated...
- every other gear worked though, and i drove it for about 2 months like that. changed the oil and there was some funky business in there...

the cause: manual shifting an auto...
- i used to cruise around with it locked in 2nd in the city, and on the freeway pull it down to 2nd to overtake... blah blah blah... these boxes can't handle abuse, manual shifting and most of all, excessive heat...

the repair: brand new gearbox...
- box was replaced with stock transmission. i put on a big mutha trans cooler, started servicing it every 10,000kms and i believe what has worked the best is that I pull the stick to D for drive, and 3 for race... that's the extent of my 'manual' shifting now...

first box lasted 32,000kms, car now has 67,000kms on it... and about 180 passes down the strip, almost 20,000kms with a 6k stall and 7 or 8k with a TK cam...

Before you do anything else, check the fluid level. I had that problem in a VYSS and it was low on fluid. Topped it up and it fixed it. You've probably already done that but worth a look if you haven't checked the trans fluid for a while.

Just to be clear "vyls1wa", i knew the box was going to die eventually(not this quick admittadly) and i know ive caused it. Im was only after what people think has actually failed in the box. Although to be honest, i only ever cruise in 'D' no manual shifting and not even power mode, also has a pretty decent sized tranny cooler too. Box only lasted less than 3000Ks with the cam. Oh well, shit happens i guess.

OT: thanks for the opinions/tips everyone else. DC347 who is building yours? Got a pist of whats being done? PM me with more details if you like.

Vulture i have checked the level. Still full, but not looking the best. Also has some minor metal shaving in there...

I told you it wontlast long. Johnnos lasted about a month, and yours was about the same. Johnno tried telling me that mine will go in a couple of weeks, considering his went 2 weeks ago, yours went yesterday, so nw its my turn. I think ill be driving it like a grandma until i get the coin to build mine haha.

I'm guessing you're talking about Neil Maxwell (Precise Auto's). I had him build a tough as nails C4 for me back in the days when I was hotting up things with Blue Ovals on them (XD).

No its actually "Qld Performance Automatics" in Spanners road. Did alot of research and not knocking any other shop I have decided to go with them. Can give anyone a list of gear he is installing if anyone would like.

nah we didnt sadly. I sat at home waiting for old mate 'Mr. Lazy Ass' above to tell me when we were going. He slept in till midday and then never ended up calling me anyway. You really dropped the ball on that one OMR346. I think he may be trying to slow down the progress of my box getting built. Because he knows when i do, ill leave him in my dust haha.

I check the fliud levels and they seem fine, do you think I am up for a new box?

Not sure what sort of built and how much coin you wish to spend on your box??? If you are looking for a cheap fix David is not someone to talk to. Like I said not cheap and if you check your PM you will see what he is doing to mine. Also not a Quick fix as the parts still haven't arrived from the USA and probaly wont till late next week.

Yea its F**cked. Losing 4th is odd though. Usually its 2nd, 3rd or both.

This is getting off topic. I will be calling atleast 2-3 of the big name places in SE QLD tomorrow on my day off and get ideas of prices and how soon it can get done.
