View Full Version : Power chips
Do the power chip upgrades improve fuel economy and give slightly more power, not that you would notice if it was a couple of KW.
How can they improve the performance etc if the manufactures can't?

Yeahhhh...Like da man says. These days you lob at a tuner's workshop or send the ECU for a 'mailorder' approximation.
Just out of curiosity I looked up PowerChip - surprised they're still in business

Head straight to one of the Brisbane based tuning shops and get a proper mafless tune...

They are not very good that mob.
I used them and no notable benefit. So expensive too.
Are they really still trying to sell these things for LS1s? Surely no-one buys them anymore. I wonder if they have ported MAF's aswell?

Chips come from the fish shop.
If you want to go faster, get a decent tune. MAFless if pre VE.

Save your money on the "power chip" type tune and put it towards a proper dyno tune if you think you need one. Any mods planned for your ride? I' went down the "power chip" road believing it would make a difference and it didn't. Couldn't notice any difference in the performance or the ecomony of my car. I always used 98 fuel and maybe that was the reason. I was told the power chip that was installed locked in the ECU mapping for 98 fuel only but it was based on the original. I went full on with the mods after that. NOW I CAN FEEL THE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So if one of these Tunes can get more power, why don't HSV tune them better then?

Same reason they dont put 440's with a blower in them lol

The custom tune allows parameters to be optimized for YOUR engine rather than all engines across a range of vehicles. It also liberates the detuning that Holden and HSV built into the early LS1s etc to allow an upgrade path for future model releases (eg. VZ LS2 at 297, VE at 307kw). Would be best to combine the custom tune with some intake and exhaust mods to maximise your gains.
believe me, you will be pleasantly surprised with a nice mafless tune, maybe just a catback exhaust and an over the radiator cold air intake (OTR). My personal preference are the gents at Walkinshaw/Powertorque (Brendale) but there are other competent shops around also. You also gain significant fuel economy improvements (the way to sell it to the wife but it is true).

I'll second that with powertorque. There also at Ormeau too.:)

Only 20minutes too, just one flash a power read out and your done;) there very fast.

I'd be doing the intake and exhaust at the same time as the tune, you'll get much better gains.

its all to do with emissions and keeping ADR complied

Yep, plus leaving room to move for future models. Anybody who tries to chip a later model V8 is a fool - unless they get a cop chip! :lmao:

Eh Wonky, but the cop chip with "flux capacitor" is even better trust me:rofl:

You cant go wrong with the good old "Cop Chip" . Proven many times over, by the good old trustly 3.8Ltr VN Commodores. There sik cuz.

Yes best on the market but very hard to get. Only chance of getting these is if you know someone who knows someone. Do you know someone...?:)

That's right Stu, and if you go one step further and bridge in a harmonic flywheel combobulator, you've got the complete package!

I can't believe that we have a "POWERCHIP" thread on LS1.com - it's insulting to the wider LS1 community! Mods please remove!
It's like having a thread topper like the new Ford SC GT/GS on a Holden site.......
:confused::confused::confused:
HSV did tune them better, look at the VY series 2 HSV 285kw compared to the VX SS at 225kw and VX clubby at 255kw. they're the same engine, the differences are (mainly) in the tune, exhaust and intake mods. Did they plan that in advance? well, what do you think? And even in that case the VY2 retained the MAF, met emissions requirements, and (in the case of the auto) still had abuse mode.

The above a good example of the old adage: there is no such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer. :slap: Of course it is relevant if it stops some poor sod spending his money on a Powerchip rather than a proper tune. So now people cannot ask questions? This is forum snobbery.
For the record.. I know the crew at powerchip and they don't "chip" ls1s etc.. they flash tune them. They may not rank highly amongst the holden/ford drivers but they dominate in the merc/bmw especially c63!

It was a tongue in cheek post - The thread had been answered by the second post.....the whole topic has digressed since then - and has been a play thing hence the Polariser comments - which I'm pretty sure most people had realised weren't serious......
Of course it is relevant that someone asks the question - so people understand the market - but they would have got that by the fourth post.

Many of the sponsors on this forum stock FDC, very popular in Sydney. We don't see the need with what we utilise.
