View Full Version : Orrsom vs VCM otr

This maybe be already discused, but what I want to know is:
How is it that every otr makes pretty much the same amount of power or so they say. Now if you compare the size of the air intake on orrsom and VCM, the vcm is a lot bigger and it goes right behind the grill too.. So the question is does the orrsom makes pretty much the same amount as vcm or ramjet for that matter? I've had vcm on my ve and it was awsome, but the car got written off, unfortunately so I am getting the new one, but:) with orrsom otr hence the curiousity..:)

the only way to really see which is better is to buy another vcm otr and test the 2 on your car, run them on the dyno and run them on the strip if you can to see which is better. They might make the same or near the same power on the dyno but there is a very good chance one will feel better to drive with on the road:).

The vcm makes pretty good growling noise and i felt the more response and power down low, but that's all i had on the car and pretty sure it had a tune before i bought it coz it made 247 rwkw. the one im gettin is cammed making 322 rwkw and the orrsom makes nice noise, it whistles more then vcm. its nice tho.

I think with the VCM you get a free bag of dirt aswell..

Bit harsh, both good units, had both, would still buy the vcm over the orrsom, for looks and extra flow over orrsom, i had about 10rwkw extra, granted it was a new filter,

I believe that bag of dirt comes served inside your engine

Go the vcm best value for money by far dont worry bout the dirt gettin in crap, all otrs will i have had a good look at them and they seal well just apply a little grease to the rubber edges.

Has anyone had a bad experience in a rain? How big are the chances of the water getting inside your engine? I used to slow down and keep the revs bellow 2500 so the engine wouldn't suck any water in a heavy rain..?:eyes:

Consider Duspeeds they can be painted the same colour as the car, filter changes are easy. Plus his fibreglass doesnt warp in the heat from the radiatoras easily as some plastics so its filter wont fall out or fail the seal.

+1 for duspeed, basically the same as VCM except it looks better, you don't have to pull it out to clean the filter and it doesnt have the seal problems VCM are going through now

See that black strip on the top with two screws, you just undo the screws and that strip slides up with the filter in it...

the black strip clips in and hold the filter in on my the dus there no screws to unscrew on the one i have the rivets along the top of the black strip are to hold the filter retainer in
i see it looks like the other one does have two screws

and you can look in through the vents and see if the filter is in properly or looks dirty with out taking it out if you like

do you have to lean the radiator back to fit one? I might have to get rid of orrsom and get dus then...

Water in engines. Free compression. FDC is all over this.

Correct me if im wrong but when an air intake is adequate, you can make is bigger etc etc without any more gain. So if the orrssom thing is doing the job isnt any slight variation vcm etc etc just going to do the same thing?

I think the better unit would come down to the materials and which resists heat transfer better??

Define adequate? No such thing as the perfect intake. There are always gains to be had with FDC designs.

Macca mate, English is my second language, so if I ask what the FDC abreviation means I hope it's not gonna sound stupid... :( the orrsom that my car comes with is a carbon fibre so I assume it should be very good then..??

Yours must have taken alot of water to stuff your engine! You look at top feulers their just this side of hydroliking thats how much fluid is going in i have driven my ute from summernats to Liverpoll with hard rain for 2 hrs on an opend 14 inch K&N filter out of the bonet and never had a problems.

I can pick up a CF orrsom OTR to replace my SS growler intake for $300 delivered.

Is there any point? Any real gain? I'm really after a duspeed but can't really afford it.

iv had ram jet and vcm otr,

the vcm was the better unit, filter is bigger, looks factory, fits better, has more deep induction noise, has better throttle responce. seems to have more pull up top. and vcm also supply the infill panels, and there back up service is second to none!

whats the rush save up and get a duspeed you know you want to. your car is nice top it off with a colour coded dus intake, great design with the performance to match.

In back to back testing we also found a noticeable gain from Dus Mk 1 to Dus Mk 2 OTRs. See http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=141041. Pic of mine in white as you would probably get HoTBoZ - looks awesome.

It is real carbon fibre on Curtis' old car. I spoke to Charlie @ Orrsom about a CF one when I already had an Orrsom on my SSV sedan.

Bloody good price as from memory the standard Orrsoms were around $600 and CF added $300 or so. Badseed went from a Growler to Orrsom and (again from memory) picked up 8 or 10 rwkw.

I will second that opinion although a stock intake with two hole mod outperforms the ramjet on the dyno :):)

About $350?

PM me if you are interested - it will save me advertsing it separately.

Yeah, I was thinking that Wonky:) I like it a lot!!:drool: although I have to say my ORSSOM being Carbon Fibre & with Chev's logo on top of it makes me  every time I pop the hood..:bow:
I think it's a very good OTR & I'm not as worried as I was when I had VCM OTR due to their warping issue.
VCM made good pwr & induction noise, was responsive as well, but I can still hear ORSSOM growling (although not as good due to cam & X force :))
