this is a old school question we are getting our sons factory injected 6 cyl VK back on the road & buying next door neighbours factory 5 litre VH for $800 bucks will it be a straight swap over putting all the VH running gear into our VK
this includes all suspension & exhaust. should be straight forward yes or no

It will go straight in, but there's so much stuff you gotta change over from the donor car...
Its a two man, long weekend job...and one of you better know what ya doing...
It really aint worth the hassle
Your better off putting an EFI 5.0Litre in it if you want a V8...Would cost about 2-3k all up including an engine/box...

Im hearing you, but this car has it all 4 wheel disc's sports exhaust great suspension big panard rods T400 auto good motor with mild cam, a much cheaper conversion.
maybe a lot easier with vic roads as well, but efi would be better for sure just a bit costly for the son

Main thing you may have problems with is the early engine number going into later model, check with the RTA etc.

Thats what I was thinking - VK had the Black V8 while the VH had the Blue motor. You may have trouble with the transport dept, RTA, etc in regard to this. As sometimes putting in an earlier series motor in a later model car is not allowed.
What Id do is grab the Diff, Suspension, and other bits needed off the VH and get a VN - VS injected 5.0 and transmission and put that in.
Or even do up / restore the VH if its not too far gone.

The blue v's balck 308 will be the only main issue however I dont know if it would cause too many dramas.
Wiring is the other item you will need to graft together but again not too much of a drama. Power steer pumps sit on opposite sides if you are going to run them but you should be able to swap the lines over.
Are you going to swap the tanks and everything over? The VK will have a high pressure pump to suit efi but the 308 wont require it. If you swap to an injected 5l however retain the VK tank and efi lines/realy etc to simplify that part of the conversion.
I personally would go the injected 5l using the VH disk brakes etc. Especially if you carry over the T700 which gives an overdrive as well.
The biggest hassle I had with my VK was integrating the wiring which if you can track down some diagrams you can peice most things together. It is pretty simple once you strip out what you dont need and work out what you need to graft into. I kept most of my engine loom intact which made it a lot easier.

You can install any motor into any vehicle so long as you have it certified by an Engineer.
That's why to simplfy the transplant you would use the correct prefix engine dedicated to the year of the VK 84-85. I done it before here in NSW & in one case the RTA insisted I had an Engineers certificate. Aside that relatively simple conversion.

Emissions law will not allow it, you can fit newer to older, but not the other way. The only exception I know if was a red 6 into a vh, but it had to be straight lpg.
What's wrong with the vh? I prefer the sl/e to the vh.

the bloke next door got it off family in NSW to do up & flog to make some money it has a brock body kit but the cars body is shagged.
the guy wants the HSV wheels & thats it.
thanks for your comments
I might check with vic roads about the engine as I thought vh & vk would be ok, it would be a shame cause my sons mate loves doing this stuff

The other way you can get it to pass vicroads is to "upgrade" the blue V8 to Black standards. Im not exactly sure what that means on the old V8s, but for example when a mate had to fit a VS V8 to a VT, all he had to do was add some emission stuff to make it the same as a VT V8 from factory. Im not sure whats different between the blue and black motors, but im guessing the block will be the same so you might only need to change heads/carby and/or emission stuff. Again im not really sure, but maybe wait for someone who knows what their talking about or head over to oldholden.com
Cheers
