So my parents are picking up a new VEII Calais tomorrow and they were told by the salesman (in the context of explaining the ongoing delays in delivery)that cars are now shipped to dealers in containers.
Surely that's not right? Packed into a container rather than being put on a car carrier?
BTW, the car was ordered on 23 October with a 4-6 week delivery timeframe quoted. It was apparently built sometime around the first week of December but has spent a long time in transit, including apparently a fair bit of sitting around at Elizabeth before it went anywhere. Can anyone else who has recently picked up a new Commodore comment on their timeframes?
It's good news for me too, as I'm scoring their '03 Vectra which means no more catching the bus to work for me

Maybe he meant an enclosed transporter which provides greater protection however has less capacity.

I picked up my Calais redline on 17 November and that was 6 weeks from when it was ordered which is how long they told me it would be. Cant comment on how it was delivered though, sorry.

No mainstream car is sent by container. If imported they are shipped by ro-ro, then delivered by open or enclosed car carrier, or if local, by truck or maybe rail.
Enclosed car carrier is the likely option as you describe.

You sure he didnt say 'cartainer'?
When said quickly it sounds like container, which some freight companies would like to have you believe when they are shipping your car around Australia.
Sounds alot more secure, but isnt really.

When selling my Maloo to Perth, A lot of the vehicles transported with TOLL transport are put in containers.
My Maloo was trucked from home to Syd, put in container and train freighted to Perth and delivered spotless.
Not having to Cross the country with dirt and rain, he said not all get put in containers but alot are starting to go by container for the protection reasons also.
Mine took around 9 days to cross from door to door.
Hope u get it soon!!

I'm sure a used car buyer can choose the level of protection he can justify/afford but I thought the OP was talking about Holden supposedly sending out cars from the factory in containers?

See post above.
I think youll find it would have been shipped in a cartainer, not a container.
Freight companies like you to think they said container as punters believe its safer so they can charge more, but cartainers are just enclosed rail freight wagons that most new cars are shipped in, not individual boxes like shipping containers.

Yes He is talking about new car freighted in container and asking nbasically has anyone had this or new cars getting freighted and just saying when mine was sent it was not specified to travel in a container, and that the toll car carriers said it depends on what they have available at the time and where they are going and try to get the majority of what are travelling a long distance on the rail, whether it be container/cartainer.
I know that the containers you see are not your regular containers and have like a raised container roof in them and these are the containers they are freighted in.http://www.railpage.com.au/f-t11340431.htm
Just stating that I had a vehicle travel by rail as that is what they did in that circumstance whether it be new or used as there were brand new cars travellin with mine also. And that the car turned up on the other end perfect and was stated to no washing etc and wasn't as was immaculate detailed black and arrived as was.
If they can use rail when travelling further distances the better my opinion.
But more to the point, hope your parents get their car soon and it arrives nice and ready to go and u enjoy it and scoring their old car.!
How unusual a car salesman talking shit ;)

Cartainer would make a lot more sense. Anyway, the parents are off to pick it up in half an hour and I'll be able to take a good look at it tonight (as well as pick up "my" Vectra in the next few days) - so it's new car day for everyone :)

Right now, at home with the wife and kids. It's not going anywhere; the Vectra will be the "drive to work" car.
