As the title states, Im up in the air about what I wonna do next

I found 2 different sets of rims I like and was tosssing up weather to get a set and lower my car while im at it

...OR....

get some higgins CNC heads put on??? Dont know if I'll do a clutch straight up. might see how the LS7 does for the time being,.

Here's the pics of the wheels

$2900 (top) vs $3800 (bottom), dont know if they do less for cash or are set on them prices??

But the Higgins CNC'd Heads complete with valves etc... are only $2800 + gaskets & fitting and obviously a re-tune

Hmmmmm Tough decision.... I want them both hahahahah

where does it end.....:1peek:

There aren't massive gains to be had doing the heads. My mechanic said straight out not to bother because the cost vs gains (on the L98 in my case) just isn't worth it, so he's obviously happy enough to lose a little profit there and give an honest opinion, which I obviously greatly appreciate!

As for the wheels, the top ones look classy, the bottom ones aggressive. How do you want your vehicle to look?

I'd do the rims, I like the first set, we have been thinking about them for our silver R8 wagon. Is that price just rims?, 19's or 20's. I haven't priced them yet, will give me a good indication of price.

I'm not usually a fan of aftermarket wheels on an HSV but I love those ones in the first pic.

i would definetly go rims and definetly be going the 1st set, look way more classier. The 2nd set just look ugly and damaged i reckon having the chrme lip the way it is

For what it's worth, from a 52 year old that's done things before, and spent heaps, get the wheels and the look first.:)

From what you have, a nice set of wheels pulls the looks, who knows what's under the hood? and really who cares.

Save some dosh, for the next newbie while getting the looks on your ride. and maybe "up" the exhaust for the note to go with the looks.:goodjob:

As for the wheels you've shown, you choose, they're both fine, one more of a classic, the other agressive looking. It's your ride, your dosh, ask away but you choose, then you'll always be happy, just keep whatever you have (stock I assume), in case you sell, change your mind or get a pink slip later.:vpo:

With 475rwhp, what work have you had done to the engine already?

Sonny put a set of Higgins heads on my LS1 a few months after he did the cam upgrade and the dyno figures went from 263rwkW and 672Nm before the heads up to 302rwkW and 761Nm. So I gained quite a bit by doint the heads. I suppose it depends on what works been done to your engine already and whether the better heads will complement those modifications. I suppose it also depends on whether you want to improve the looks of your car or its performance too.

few different answeres...good to get different perspectives.

I currently have a 227/231 crow cam, LS7 clutch, heavy duty lifters, valve springs, VCM OTR, Pacemaker 4-1's, magnaflow high flow cats, twin 3" manta system, maffless tune.

Currently pushing out 475rwhp (354rwkw) and thought doing the heads would be worthy, push me over 500rwhp and give me more torque?? Dont know really, thats just my guess :)

As for the rims, My clubby's silver so I already know how good they'd look :D, I like the top ones too but also think the bottom ones are good because of the aggressive look, BUT in saying that Im leaning more towards the top ones

I'll prob go see them both in person.

Prices are for 20's with tyres.

P.S: All the stock parts that I take off my car are put in my shed ;)

How do you find keeping them clean???

As you know the VE HSV are prone to brake dust

I've got up graded brakes which also produce some dust (PBR M-series). It's also one of the reasons I went with a predominantly black rim. Cleaning is easy (just a brush between the spokes) but I don't do them too often as unless you're only a couple of feet away, you don't notice the dust anyway. Only problem you may encounter is gutter rash if you stray too close to a curb, as they do protrude slightly past the tyre wall. Had mine over a year now without incident however.

I liked them for the Monaro because it gave the coupe a more european performance car look (eg BMW M5) and you can fit the biggest brakes ever made under them.:)

When every one gets after market rims.

what are ppl thought on staggered (say 8.5's front, 9.5/10's rear) ..vs.. non staggered (say 8.5's all round)???

Obviously keep lowereing in your thoughts.

For what it's worth I've gone staggered, 19s, 8.5 front and 9.5 rear with just a guard roll at the rear. It's also lowered slightly on Pedders XA coilovers. Can go lower but exhaust would scrape on speed bumps. Tyre wear appears even all around so I would recommend staggered for sure.

Not everyone is gonna lika the rims, if they did it'd be a boring place :)

I Like both rims I put up which is why its hard to choose if im gonna buy a set. IMO the rims actually suit the clubby nice... either way I went....

Rims are very much a personal choice but I agree with Kuzman - think the second set are :spew:. Then again some people probably think that about mine but I love them and that's all that matters to me!! :yup:

As for heads - that price ($2800 + gaskets + fitting) sounds expensive to me from what I believe guys over here have paid for the Higgins heads. A lot of money for probably 15 - 20rwkw max.. Depending on your exact cam characteristics you may also start running into PTV issues (piston to valve clearance).

An E series would just look sooooooooooooo wrong with skinny tyres on the rear, plus you would lose traction which will obviously be an issue with all your power!!

I've had 2 VEs with SSLs all round and my ute had SSSLs all round (changed fronts back to SSL due to low front bar) both running 20x10s on the rear. Hardly ever scrape the tyres on the guard, though rear guards are rolled to the max.

yeah Im not 100% sure about the price off the heads, the 2800 price for the heads was a while ago, cant remember exactly how much it was and if that price was fitted and tuned or not,

It was just something I asked about whilst I was getting the cam done about 6 months ago :P

Im gonna ring up start of Jan and get exact prices, but I roughly remember that figure when I inquired at the time, like I said, im not 100% if it was fitted and tuned or not .

Cam spec's are
Crow cam/Hot street cam
227/231
.585
.585
112lsa

Considering I have 475rwhp now, doing the heads will give me over 500rwhp, but the main thing I wonna find out is will the Torque go up much??

As for the rims, IF i get them, I think I'll go staggered :)

31-12-2010, 01:05 AM
The most noticeable improvement will be the gain in torque with the new heads, the maximum KW number probably won't increase too much. Worth doing in my opinion, with your current list of mods your engine will love it.:goodjob:
