Hello,
I am about to get new tyres and was set on getting Falkens. I have done a few searches and found the views were michelin or continental.
I would like to keep the tyre cost under $500 a tyre BUT would look at paying more if I will get better tyre for the money.
Weekend monaro with alot of power and wheels custom to fit the car. 20 inch 8.5 wheel. Street driving NO track work.
I have no idea about tyres. Really no idea.
Any help would be great.

I have Falken 452 on the rear and they grip pretty bloody well considering the way I drive:):) not noisy or harsh I have had yolk advans, nitto's, bridgees, and several others on at different times:):) the only other tyre I would have on the car for drives would be the nitto for grip:))
On the front ATM I have sumo htrzIII and they donthe job quite well considering the odd occasion around barbagello if in Melbourne go see John and the guys at Protek they can supply And fit what Eva ya need that's where I get my Tyres from and I am in Perth

the tyres youre talking about you wont get for under 500 a corner,
the falkens are about 4-500 a corner and still a great tyre, id say stick with them...

Thanks for the replies.
The only real reason I wont go over $500 a tyre is I have a feeling the car will do under 5000kms a year and suspect the rubber will age before I use tyre.
I have a tyre bloke who will fit them and I was going to buy the tyres of eBay. A set of Falkens up here with be over $1800 fitted but if I buy them of ebay it will work out to be half that.
It seems wrong that the car is getting delux treatment in mods but I know nothing about tyres and dont know which I should put on it.
get george the school teacher to run the rims down to dubbo and get the tyres from tyrepower. got the falken

What about Kumho Ecsta Spt? I recently replaced my rears (275/30/20) after the first set did 25,000km. Quite a grippy tyre (have seen them compared favourably to Bridgies etc) and last reasonably well. Well under $300 per corner and no doubt in the size you are chasing even cheaper. I have 245s on the front and at 28,000+ km they still have heaps of tread left. :goodjob: Only slight negative is they do get a bit noisy when they're worn.

Alright I will go the Falkens. I have a sneaking suspicion my girlfriend has brought me 2 for my b'day. She just unleashed the fury after I told her I was getting opinions on other brands.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
George is at his wedding and wont be back for a while so I will sort something out.

I might have already got 225's for the front. I will tactically start a conversation and see how I go. I had the 225,245 and 255 on the eBay watch list so I am not sure.

Yeah, i hear you. I need 4 tyres as well, but I'm leaning towards Pirelli P Zero. I have Potenza re760 or adrenalin and they are very good grip wise and have a recent wear rate, but they are noisy now with not much tread left on them.. New Contis are apparently the grippiest tyre at the mo, some say it's even better then Michellin PS2...? Downside to Contis is that they get worn out quite quickly..???

Yep, as Ryan (DukeZ) says, definitely go see the guys at Protek (Bridgestone) in Oakleigh. It is owned by Black Diamond (John) on here and they really look after forum members, especially fellow Chev's guys (John has all his work done by Chev and knows your car very well!).
Right at the start of Ferntree Gully Rd, right next door to New Oakleigh Ford.

Bridgestone Potenza re050a like VE oem will outdo a Falken anyday dunno how you come to the conclusion they are better?
Latest tyre test from wheels suggests that the Goodyear F1 are the go for wet and mostly all round performance. Certainly better than Falken's.
Anyway any of the good brands like michelin pilot sport 2's or 3's, Bridgestone Potenza RE 0 range, Goodyear F1 or Continental Contacts will perform better than those cheapies people neglect themselves with.

i wouldnt say im neglecting my self when i get a good cheaper tyre. on the road you would never feel the difference, if your going to those more expencive brands why not go to a semi slick, (better again)they would wear just as quick and would give better performance in the extremes where my cheaps apparently wouldnt.maybe im not putting out enough rwkws to see the difference. i could bend on the fronts being more important but a hardly driven weekend fun machine on the back roads? go the correctly rated cheapest tyre i say..

on the contrary, if your having the weekend only punt in a high powered car or be it a lower powered hot hatch, you are better of with the best rubber you can afford. It is the determining factor if your car stays on the road or goes off, stops in time or not.
People tend to put crap rubber on their car cos it's an afterthought, kinda like spending $4000 on a bed (yet most of life is spent there). you get what i mean? Not trying to offend.
And Wonky i believe the ecstas are great tyres for the money.

i understand your arguement but i have had many tyres on the front, even smei slick falkens rt215 and as far as i can feel there is no difference,, on the rear ive had some of the more expencive brands and there was a difference.. the cheaper nankangs grip better.. the car when i first got it use to break loose in the rear in first on a set of goodyear f1's(40% left) under hard exceleration. now with the nankangs it just squats and holds.. . i was surprised. im not saying there the S@#T but they are a good buy for the price... better than some that dont even make the correct load rateing..

I like to stick with well known brands. Having said that I'm not prepared to pay a fortune for the tyres, coz I tend to slip the rears quite often, accidentally of course.. :1peek: I've had nankang and I've had federal and to me they are only good for burnouts and donuts :) which is something that I like a lot :):)

Trust me there is nothing wrong with Nitto's look at the RE55 which was one of the main tyres and still is used by alot of guys runnung sprints etc etc

I will end up going back to Nitto's on my next set of tyres again

Pretty impressive... Who makes these? Are they really that good? The pattern is all over the place, but according to them it seems to work, huh? Cost for 20"?

Funny you should mention that. I got all the delux mods done on my VX SS including the suspension. Six months later I visited a gutter on the way to work and did about $6k damage to the front end suspension. My car still had the original Brigestones on it with about 60,000 kms. When I took her back to get the suspension replaced I was informed that the tyres had gone off with age (about 6-7 years old). Didn't know about tyres aging, I do now though! Still, it could have been worse and I suppose I got out of it lightly. I ended up putting a set of 19" VZ II Maloo rims c/w Pirelli from NVU.

If your only doing 5000 kms I would go semis. Should last you a year or 2.

hmmmm so I guess whats next to say is, if money was not an issue and I wanted a tyre that was great in the wet, dry and gripped (tried to grip) with a powerful engine, what would/should I go for.
I would love to go semis but read they are not suited to rain. Is this true.

I would like to drive the car to the drags then drive it home. Would like to be able to drive the car anywhere anytime. I guess I want a daily driver that I only drive on the weekend.
Yes I only take it out if it is nice outside BUT if I go for a run to the nearest Maccas the weather can change 3 or 4 times. It doesnt rain much where I am but the last 2 months has proved that wrong.

Look semi-slicks will only perform when warmed up, as long as you can keep them warm they will out do a normal road tyre even in the wet.
As for money being no object, well you need to look at the premium cars like Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Lambo etc. Think Michelin pilot sport/cup, Bridgestone Potenza, Continental Conticontact3(overpriced and perfomed not so good in tyre test), Pirelli, Goodyear F1.
They don't use Kumho, Falken, Nitto, Maxxis and so on, if these brands performed as good as the more expensive brands then the manufacturers would use them to keep costs down. A decent tyre although not fully semi-slick is the Toyo R1R it performed very well in the latest Motor tyre test only losing one round to the F1 and only bested by the two fully semi-slicks in the test!
