auto or manual mate? if its manual its fairly easy the manual knobs just lift straight up, just give it a real good yank, dont try twist it off cause there got some lock in design thingy, and the other one just place on in position and give it a hit with a rubber mallet mate

shit. that might help.
manual boss.
is the boot any different between an SV6 and the HSVi item?
as it is a gear knob and shifter boot together

You need to give it a real good yank. If its never been off before it will be very very very tough to get off!

The boot is attached to the gear knob you will have to remove console top to get to screws that hold boot in place . I bought a new leather knob and boot but haven't fitted yet as I can see myself damaging lid getting it off .

i change my boot and knob over not real hard once you'v done it, there is bout 8 clips in total i think, just start at the front near the head unit and lever it up along slowly down each side, then disconnect all the electric clips, you;ll also need a zip tie to tie the knob to the boot, there is 4 philips head screws holding the gear boot on too

To save your self a black eye. There is a clip under the gear knob. Take off your transmission sournd unscrew the boot. Pull the boot over the knob and put a small screw driver under the knob and twist. The boot is onlyheld onto the gear knob with a cable tie.
Good luck.

when stating the transmission cover, im guess this is the piece of flat plastic that starts just infront of the ESP button, back to the cup holders fitted inbetween the two rough edge plastic panels?
eg. (please excuse, got the pic off google)

is this the piece you mean? also, how do you pull/lever this up?
with a small flat-blade screwdriver?

if you take a look here (this is from the Billet Products Australia site, their instructions on how to install their short shift kit) it's outlined pretty well. It goes through the steps of jacking the car up to make it safe etc, but ignore that bit and just go through the bit where it outlines removing the boot, knob and console bit.

i found it eaiser if you start near the window switch. The esc and pwr window switches should stay in the suround. just un plug them
gently lever the suround up working your way toward the dash. it is only held in with plastic clips.
good luck

But now I want a short shifter.

Thanks for the tip- I couldnt get it off otherwise.
Just to clarify put the screw driver under the bottom of the rubber grommity thing (once you take off the boot)- see picture.
