I haven't heard much about the series 2, but the previous model was the dog of dogs. A former work colleague bought one - during its first two years it spent more than half its time in the dealer workshop. By all accounts this was normal. After two years he traded it at a huge loss (lease still had a year to run, plus serious depreciation due to their reputation as unreliable).
Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

I've also read that the new one is pretty good......but after my wife owning a series 1, I wouldn't piss on it iff it was on fire. By far and away the worst piece of shit I've ever seen, was described to me by a wholesaler as "shit of the earth". But yes, have heard good things about the new one.

if it is anything like the new Land Rover Discovery it should be awesome, but it most likely isn't....
yeah , i've heard all the bad stories about the 1st freelanders
and yes i wouldn't piss on it if it was on fire , burn baby burn .
but i hear only good things about the freelander 2 .

If you're serious, I'd suggest a little test: ask the dealer for a written undertaking that they'll provide a loaner from their demonstrators for use whenever it's in for unscheduled servicing / troubleshooting. Given the reputation of the series 1, they should know it's the only way to rebuild credibility for the model. The response will give you a good idea of the dealer's confidence in the series 2 reliability.
Let us know how you go if you try.

A bit left field but my old boss bought a brand new suzuki vitara. Similar size to a freelander and it impressed the hell out of me. Interior quality was good, they are meant to be half decent off road for a small 4wd, he has had it for nearly 18 months now and not had a problem with it. Might be worth a look

my missus used to work for a mixed make dealership which suzuki was apart of and she raves about how suzuki had the lowest warranty claims of the lot

When we went looking for a runabout for the mother inlaw the swift was miles ahead as the best drivers car. Plus we got a whole heap of option thrown at us. Ended up buying the swift and she hasnt looked back. They are very underestimated as a car brand in my opinion.

If it's anything like the Land Rover Discoveries my father in law has owned, run the hell away. Poorly built, unreliable heaps of poo that break down constantly. He now drives a Pajero, because he wanted a car that could go more than a week without mechanical failure.

Dunno about the old ones but my boss has a brand new one and with 6 big guys in it it goes hard, he has the tdv6, drives great and finish is excellent

Function was never the problem - reliability was. The father in law had 2 of them, and once they got past about 2 years old they had constant problems, including major mechanical issues. And these were vehicles driven gently by an older guy, serviced according to schedule.
The new ones may well be great, but no way would I be taking a chance.

Head over to the Aulro forums. I'm sure they will have an opinion.

An old mechanic once said to me "If it's got ROVER in it's name, don't buy it"
