View Full Version : Oil change frequency??
The last full oil change on my R8 was at 37,500ks (Interim service but still did a ful oil change - I was told HSVs need it!!!).
I have it booked for its 45,000k service. Does it need another oil change after only 7,500ks? I know it wont hurt it, it can only be a good thing, right?
I've checked the levels - all good - and in maintenance mode, oil life is showing at 51% (this was recalibrated at last service so should be spot on).
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers.

I do 5-6000km at most with my VU.
Though with the bigger sumpful of oil in the VE I don't see anything wrong with doin 7500km oil and filter change.

The thoery behind the increased service intervals is the increased sump capacity from VT-VZ 5.7l which held 5.2L with oil filter change approx to the VE 6L which takes 8.5L with oil filter change approx. They did the same with the VY 3.8L ecotec. Now two trains of thought bigger sump keeps oil temps somewhat down, there fore oil won't "go off" as quickly, oil takes longer to heat up due to being more off it. But as is always the case we are at the mercy of oil companies and occasionally will find some oil going off quicker than others (mainly with the cheaper brand oils) Nothing wrong with leaving it to 15,000 km in a ve or 10,000 vt-vz but is in no way a bad thing to do a oil and filter change in between.
Just make sure you do your weekly checks ie. everything that has yellow writing or a yellow cap. Manufacturers colour code what they want you to keep an eye on.

I do our VE every 7,500km which seems to come around alot since we did 45,000km's in in 18 months. My VZ is every 5,000km's.
Recently I was speaking to a Holden District Service manager about cam shaft failures in stock VE V8's that are driven hard. I know of 4 locally completely stock cars. He suggested a combination of oil quality and dirty oil cuasing issues with the oil pump on occasion making 1 of the roller lifter run dry.
So 7,500km's on a 'normally' driven VE is the go, anything driven really hard more often.

I get the VY serviced every 6 months, which usually equates to every 4-5 thousand kilometres. I've let it run up to 10,000km in the past when it was being used lots, including lots of highway work, and it's never missed a beat.
According to the service manual, it should be doen every 10,000km or 6 months.

you can't change your oil too much :)...
well, in my opinion, it's not possible to have the oil too clean, too new, or too often replaced...
so if you're booking it in for a 45,000km service, do it as the book says, by the book... it's good for resale too :)
on average, i do my engine and trans oil every 1,500 - 3,000kms.............
Thanks guys - figured as much.
Previously in my SS it was serviced every 10,000ks/6 months. With the E Series HSV there is an in between service (every 7500ks) so it always comes up quicker than I'm used to.
Cheers.

Interesting they now recommend 15k intervals though huh? At my last oil change at the dealer they told me it didn't need it. I asked them to anyway. When I got it back, I found they hadn't replaced the Mobil 1 with Mobil 1!! :vpo:

They achieved longer oil changes by increasing the sump capacity.
However ....
I don't like over 10,000 klm changes in engines as combustion by-products can be quite damaging to your engine not to mention start the old age sludging thing.
I prefer 10,000
Cheers

hold both the up/down buttons (under mode/set buttons on dash), turn on ignition, it will beep and ask to confirm, hold set button till it disappears.

I,m with the rest , 7,500 . Even my daugthers echo had black oil when we bought it , but after 7,500 k's oil changes it's nice and clean.
My neighbour had an air cooled 4 stroke mulcher which overheated from the fins on the engine became blocked under the engine cover. When it cooled down the engine oil was like tar and it wouldn't start. The local mower shop said it was stuffed... full rebuild. So I told him to drain oil for 24hours which moved very slowly, like treacle. Put new oil in got it started ,run for 5 minutes and changed oil again, did that 3 times and now it's perfect ever since.Lucky it only takes 1 litre to change...lol.

As Steve said, achieved by increasing sump capacities. Also oills are constantly improving with better technology. Longer service intervals are due at least in part to fleet demands in order to reduce running costs.

Yep it's all about servicing costs.
