View Full Version : Can heavy rain get into OTRCAI?

Saving for my OTRCAI/tune. Just reading through "water in my engine" thread and got me thinking about Highway speed driving in heavy rain down pour. Especially after one contributor said he had water ingestion after passing a truck going through a puddle (big splash) and gave his OTRCAI a good slurp of H2O.
Thoughts on the heavy rain vs OTR battle would be appreciated

I could be wrong (again ) but I think Mick (sixlta) had a pod filter and not OTR when his motor ingested water. Pods are far more suspectible given their low mounting position. Quite a few people have tested OTRs with high pressure hoses and not had any problems.

what about washing your car, wouldnt that be just as bad if it did do any damage? (high pressure water directed on the front grill) or is that ok because the engine is off?

Had no dramas with my Russo OTR in the torrential rain encountered in SA a few weeks before X-mas.

oops how did i miss that!
I've had an ORRSOM OTR for some 18 months and no probs. It / was a daily driver and drove throught some mega heavy and constant rain during 2010 (didn't we all) and not a drop got in. Even when washing, as long as you don't shove the hose up into the grill at full blast, you'll be sweat.

I have Duspeed OTR and have been through huge down pours at up to 110 kph over long trips, and no sign of any water ingestion.

I'm also a DuSpeed OTRCAI user, and living in Queensland it has seen a splash or two of rain. No problems this far.

The amount of water going through with heavy rain would not be an issue.
And the truck going through the water created a wave rather than a splash from memory. No different from driving under water when the wave goes above the bonnet.

ive had no probs with my otr... but like any air cleaner if it gets drowned it will suck into the intake.... but washing and driving in the rain is totally different.. it has never even had a water mark on it after driving in the rain...

In my previous Ve VCM otr, a mate and I tested this theory using a moisture prob from my mums paddock soil test stuff and Water dye pad (50mm long). On a rainy sat close 25mm from memory two yes ago now The car was driven over 100km, the wipers where on full speed and quick drive to Chaddy and back (45mins).
The water dye pad was stuck just inside the upper intake lip showed a few purple tiny spots about size of match head. The moisture prob showed slightly less inside the otr than outside otr. So really no effect We found, u can go an get all technical rain direction, size of drops, wind direction but we just did a simple test out of interest.
