View Full Version : What other mods short of a cam upgrade?

Starting to get a little bored with what I have at the moment lol.
Current set up is Russo OTR + MAFless tune, Dual 2.5" X-Force exhaust system inc high flow cats and extractors.
Next mod lined up is a 3.7 diff with Trutrac + Harrop sports cover, but once I'm done with that I'm stumped at what else to do.
Im thinking of maybe going stally and some high ratio rockers or but even an E85 tune since Caltex near me now has it on offer (can the VY2's even be tuned to run on E85?). Im really unsure on what else to do as I dont want to disrupt its daily manners
Even though I said no cam, I wouldnt mind one aslong as it didnt effect low rpm drivability and throw the fuel usage out to far

can still get a cam to give you the low down torque and power whilst wouldnt be a large duration cam would give the nice lumpy idle and have to power range in a traffic friendly rev range.

Are brake and suspension upgrades under consideration?

yeah brakes and suspension are on the cards but im planning the brake upgrade after stepping up to bigger rims(aiming for 19's) as I only have 17's on at the moment.
I was thinking of swapping the C4/330mm rotor brake upgrade from VS into the VY but i dont think it would be much better then standard

manifold with the high lift rollers, that'll give you the torque lift where u need it. I put on a fast manifold and 1.8 rollers, did wonders before the cam.

Fast manifold? Magnificent looking manifold for very little gain. Good way to waste some folding stuff though, even with a big cam and heads :)

from what ive read the LS6 manifolds are pretty much the best 'streeter' manifold, the FAST ones etc come into play when your chasing the last bit of hp high up in the rpm range.
Would a bigger T/B be advisable? in not sure if the outlay of cash would be worth the few rwkw it gains but from what ive read it does increase throttle response.

Yep, get your LS6 ported properly and match it up with a ported and polished stock T/B. I spent big coin on a Fast/Nick Williams Combo on my H/C LS1
for zero gain, dont make the same mistake :)

Unless it is slightly used and cost buggar all.:):):)

Useable torque increase was for instance before, in drive vehicle kicked down on cruise control @ 115kmph on about 15 hills at least between Syd Melb on the Hume.
After same trip same speed etc there was one, max 2 it kicked down for. = useable increase in torque without doing cam.

You want more torque - one word "Stallie".
Nice little 2800-3000 converter & it will be a different car almost as good as a little cam.

Coil-overs!
Car will seem almost "too fast" in the twisties!
It's a slippery slope though, first its good suspension, then big brakes... next thing you know the car is getting a cage and seam welded.

Agreed, but coil overs arnt the way to go.
Its a common mistake, but people think "hard" suspensions (like coil overs) means good handling.... Thats only partly true.
For a street car i would be going a decent set of springs and shocks, but rather than coil overs id install some sway bars and strut brace and possibly upgrade the bushes. This will firm up the suspension but it will still ride nicely.
Coil overs should be the last part of the suspension upgrade and only really relevant if your going on the track.
Brakes are a worthwild upgrade as well (even if its just better rotors/pads)

thanks for the input people.
Since its a Calais, im just going to leave the suspension standard as i dont want another car that rides as though its on the stops.
Brakes are on the cards but like i said ,i'll do it when i go to a set of 19's.
