hi guys,
this is my first time posting to this website. but have been reading the site for many years as i love holden v8's i just love ford sixes more hence driving an XR6
before i start let me say i know that this is a holden forum and i am asking a ford related question. so please no smart ass reply's telling me wrong forum or fords are shit. this is primarily a warranty question where i believe you blokes can give me some good advice.
im nineteen and i have a 07' Bf MkII xr6 with the four speed automatic. since i got the car the transmission has deteriorated and become extremely jerky and is around a few hundred kilometres from failing. because of this i have to drive the car extremely carefully and be very light on acceleration. although now this has become unbearable because it does not matter how slow i drive i almost have my head ripped off on up change from 1st to 2nd.
my question is i had the car fully serviced at 97,000 k's and tried to fix as many problems under warranty as possible and asked them to thoroughly check the car over. now at 107,000 k's this problem is unbearable. being nineteen there is no way im going to be able to afford a new gearbox, nor will i as the car is only six months 7,000 k's out of warranty.
my question is how do you think i should approach this with ford? i believe i have a relatively strong case to put forward that the car should be fixed under warranty what do you guys think?
anyone been in a similar situation?
cheers guys..

I thought BF's got the 6 speed ZF?
Did you mention to them at the 97,000km check you were having problems with the auto? If not your probably out of luck. Also I cant imagine that they wouldve been looking for warranty issues (esp non roadworthy/pink slip type) to fix if you didnt raise them at the time.

you will probably be told to buzz off, but it could just be bands or some clutches that need replacing
I would call a few places that specialize with building Ford autos and see how much for a service or reco, it may not be that much?

yes it is the four speed. i believe the ZF was an option at the time.
and i actually i did ask them to look at the transmission at the time because it was jerky sorry i thought i mentioned that.
thats why im so angry its deteriorated to almost failing in 10,000 k's

I think you should start saving..
Were your complaints recorded in any way when you took it in at 97k? It'll be the only shot you have. I had an issue with aircon in my BA (which is a common and inevitable fault) at 75k. Since it was the winter months, I wasn't in a hurry to get it fixed. At service I advised them of it, when I picked the car up they said they didn't have time to look at it. I made sure they noted it down. Same thing happened at the next service. I then booked it in and was told it was a 2 day fix. At this stage the car was ~110k. They tried to charge me $1500 but when I pointed out on their own records that they had declined to look at it twice within warranty, they waived it.

Rebuilding an auto isnt as expensive as you might think, just dont go through your Ford dealer to get it done.

Mate, can't help you much more than the advice others have given you so far in terms of warranty but i do know that the 4AT in the falcons can be replaced quite cheaply. The tranny in my dads BA ute went last year. Our mechanic quoted close to $2000 to either replace it or repair, (Can't remember which) but my dad did some digging and found this out.
If you go to a taxi specialist you'll get it done quick smart and for half the price. See he went to a mob who specialize in cab tranny's. They have transmitions waiting to go in cars all the time as all they do is swap it over and repair the old one and it goes into another car. he got it changed over, labour and all for $1000. Ask around and i'm sure you'll find one of these mobs.

Buddy it will be the shift solonoid.
Very common on those boxes, I have had plenty replaced on those 4 speed Ford boxes.
(It costs me around $200 to replace, just pan off, replace and change filter at the same time. I am in the trade in Adelaide.)
If you were in Adelaide I could organise trade price for you but as you are over there I suggest get out the "yellow pages" and call a few transmission shops in your area untill you get one that does not want to try and sell you a rebuilt transmission. Just ask them for a quote over the phone to replace the solonoid. It is not a hard job, I have even heard of a few guys doing it at home, it just all unbolts and plugs in.

Taxi specialist auto trans guy is a good idea, but you will not need to replace the transmission, it will just be the solonoid! :)

Having a read through your post it sounds like your S5 pressure control solenoid has packed it in, its in control of line pressures and shift changes, do a quick google search of BF S5 solenoid and have a read of all the problems people have and the symtoms they cause.

Just a bit of advice, get it fixed soon and drive it really gentle untill you fix it because the thumping or shock can crack the drum and do more damage,
then you might need to replace the transmission.

No problems, hey please come back on the thread and let us know when it is fixed.
Good luck finding someone decent, do you know anyone in the trade to give you a recommendation?
It is a very easy, quick job, any mechanic could do it in well under an hour. :)
Hi Jakey91 all you can do is go into ford and speak to them if that does not work. call Fordcare and speak to them they can be helpfull. if that fails take you car into an Trans show for a Greabox service they will change filter and oil that may fix your issue. also your car should have a 6 Speed ZF i have never herd of a BF XR6 without a ZF 6 speed auto.

+ 1 to the solenoid.
The one problem the OP may have is the warrantee. He says it is an 07 BF, but not what month, could well have been Jan 07 so it could be out of warrantee by 12 months.
Important to remember with warrantees is that they are x kms or y months whichever comes first.

Standard tranny was the 4 speed, 6 speed was optional.
On the FG's, 5 speed was standard up till march 2010, and 6 speed was optional. From March 2010 onwards, 6 speed was standard on xr's
