View Full Version : User experiences when selling HSV
Hi guys,
I was wondering what experiences people have had when selling their HSVs privately.
I've put mine up for sale, priced it competitively and a week later haven't even received 1 inquiry.
It's a VE 2007 Clubby and although there are 15 or so other ones already listed on carsales, so maybe I'm expecting results too soon.
My previous car (06 WRX) was listed on Friday and sold on Monday, so you can see why I'm a bit concerned this time around.
Have any of you sold your cars recently and whats been the average turnaround (listed to sale)?

Only a week mate, don't be to concerned. I have had a VS 5 litre ute up for sale for the last month and not one single phone call. Had people stop and write details down and that but no calls.
Your car being a lot more attractive then mine, don't fret too much yet. I think it is this time of year too.

What is your asking price, in comparison to others and Redbook, etc?
To sell a car privately is a PITA at times - on one occasion you'll get a kajillion tyre-kickers and at other times, the first to see will buy.....
Good luck with it.
What is your asking price, in comparison to others and Redbook, etc?
I've set asking price at $43,990 to give some room for negotiation. It's done 50,000km and its Nov 2007 model.
Redbook shows 2007 model with 60,000km as ~43k (looking at min/max values).
Compared to other cars around the same year and same k's, I think I'm in the ballpark.
I know selling is PITA however, trade in only gives me ~37k at best. :bawl:
I'm more than willing to negotiate, just need someone to do it with!
I know selling is PITA however, trade in only gives me ~37k at best. :bawl:
That's how much I got for mine as trade, though I screwed them down on the car I traded it in on, which doesn't bother me - less stamp duty and I claim the difference on sale vs depreciation as a tax deduction.
Are you looking to trade on another vehicle? Don't look at what they're offering as trade value, look at what the changeover price is. People often focus too much on the value of their own car to be reamed in the back end by a salesman that's done it a thousand times. I don't care what they offer me as trade, I only care how much it's going to cost me to get into a new car - if they can't negotiate on that price then I go somewhere that can.

I'll be getting the new Golf R. At the moment its either buy whats in stock or wait 8 months for it.
And because of this dealers aren't willing to negotiate on the price.
Hence, its get the best deal of your trade-in or sell it privately.

It's a tough sellers market you are selling in... I've spent a bit of time looking for my next car.
Have you seen how cheap some of the cars are?
2007 E Series GTS for $34900 (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=10016971&YearFromShort=1650&__Qpb=true&Cr=8&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965530% 201650%20246&silo=1011&__No=15&seot=1&__Nne=15&trecs=1011&__sid=126A4BF72EA3) seems a bit too cheap this one
2007 E Series Clubbie for $35300 (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/dealer/details.aspx?R=9942418&YearFromShort=1650&__Qpb=true&Cr=1&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965530% 201650%20246&silo=1011&__No=30&seot=1&__Nne=15&trecs=1011&__sid=126A4BF72EA3)
2006 E Series Clubbie for $35999 (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=9871212&YearFromShort=1650&__Qpb=true&Cr=7&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965530% 201650%20246&silo=1011&__No=30&seot=1&__Nne=15&trecs=1011&__sid=126A4BF72EA3)
2006 E Series Senator for $36900 (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=9353351&YearFromShort=1650&__Qpb=true&Cr=14&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965530% 201650%20246&silo=1011&__No=30&seot=1&__Nne=15&trecs=1011&__sid=126A4BF72EA3)
It's a real buyers market at the moment.. the GTS got me tempted..!
Cashie,
The senator is in QLD and has 107,000kms... thats more than twice than mine.
The clubby is once again QLD, 80,000kms, all those mods and now selling it cheap, I'm slightly concerned about the "wear and tear" that car might have
The second clubby is in NSW, done 120,000kms and its auto.
4. The last one seems interesting. Wonder why its so cheap? Or better yet, wonder whats wrong with it, cause thats lower than what he'd get for a trade-in.
Also, Sydney prices are always higher than rest of Australia, so I was comparing like-for-like then setting the price.

Everyone compares apples and oranges differently...
I'm a buyer (regular used buyer too) and thought I would give you a buyers view.
Interstate has NO bearing on a car for me, I will buy from anywhere in Aus for the right price..
Also, I will guarantee that Perth prices are generally "higher than anywhere in Aus"...
Try a few more examples:
2007 E Series Clubby, 48,00kms, leather, in popular white, in NSW $37990 (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=10019124&YearFromShort=1650&__Qpb=true&Cr=8&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&MileageTo=750&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965530% 201650%20246%20%20750&SearchAction=N&silo=1011&__No=30&seot=1&__Nne=15&trecs=761&__sid=126A4BF72EA3)

I'm not trying to bag out your car, just give another view (that you asked for)...

It's very common to see late model HSV's being sold privately end up at dealerships. I've watched a few that I've contemplated on carsales etc, and have always seen the same ones later at a yard. Perhaps the dealers wait until they've been on the market for a few weeks then swoop to buy them wholesale anyway.

Indeed there are and your feedback is much appreciated.
That's why I posted here, trying to get people's views and opinions.
I'm honestly struggling to understand why people have listed their cars for so cheap.
Ahh well, I'll just sit around and wait for a couple of more weeks and see what happens.

from what i have seen over the last 3 months searching for an e series clubby if they are not priced under 40 they are not being moved on. i think it is priced a little too high for the market at the moment, but you do have room to move with that price. its not a good time sell right now

Selling a car is all about market forces.
If no one is biting then you are asking too much ..... pretty simple really.

1 week is not long enough to make a call on the public reaction.....
It all depends how keen you are to sell... my opinion (and you won't want to hear it :) ) is that the trade is a pretty decent starting offer, I would work this a bit harder and see where it goes... I know VW are not bargaining too much on the Golf R but surely there is some fat in it? (have you tryed discountnewcars.com.au or another buying service to see if they can get a better discount?)
If you can wait, play the carsales game and gradually lower the price over time until it sells..

maybe ppl are just biting the bullet and selling there cars at a loss just to get rid of them, you might lose abit now but its only gonna get worse.
Its probly the wrong time to sell a car atm anyway I reckon, start of the year and all, jobs still not fully back into work 100%, so ppls pockets are still pretty tight on what they wonna spend etc....
just my view.
But ya gotta give it a go for afew weeks first, then maybe drop the price if need be,
but at the end of the day its worth what some-ones willing to pay for it, not what you think its worth. Its hard to let it go when you want more :) , trust me I know.
hang in there you never know :)

At $43.990 you are probably competing with brand new Series 2 SS's as well
with 3 years full factory warranty. 4 year old HSV vs 2011 SS. You may have to drop a bit to make it more tempting. Sit on it for a while and see how it goes, I hate selling private though I have done it in the past.

Yeah, I totally understand that, however you need to give yourself room for negotiation.
At $43,990 I'll be willing to negotiate up to 10% off, but I guess people might see the "starting" price and get put off by it.
I guess at this stage, I'll just leave it there for the next few weeks.
See how it goes in a months time and if it's no-go even then, I'll just give it to the stealers as a trade-in.

If you are prepared to take $39,500 I would have it listed at $39,990 (this will ensure you get the guys searching for cars under $40k), it will also give you $500 to haggle off the car (to replace the windscreen or whatever minor the buyer brings up).
I think 10% is a big margin, especially as it has pushed you so far into the $40k's asking price.
If the car is a genuine clean car, a serious buyer will see it for what it is and won't be turning up pushing for a 10% discount, IMHO...

Advertise it for $500 more than your rock bottom price. The negotiate $500 the $500. If they dont like it, let them walk...then come back.

a lady friend I know just sold this 07 model last week $55.000 custom exhaust & motor work, guess she was lucky.
but I can get $45 for mine from 2 different people maybe I should take ithttp://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii286/black_bettyhsv/hsvmonarobonnet011.jpg
I've always taken up to 2 months to sell my Clubbys in the past and they are always the cheapest on the Market. I'm just happy to get enough to pay out the finance so you'll probably find a lot of those cheap ones are doing the same.
I bought my VE 6 months ago for $41,000 with 60k on the clock. Consider that E3 and GXP have been released since then also. There are still cars on there that were there when I was lookIng and there still trying to get low to mid 40s

My heavely modified Z series took 2 days to sell as i didn't try to recoupe the 22k that was spent on mods. Got 30K for it with 46000k's on the clock.

I hold the same opinion. Sometimes the difference in price is more than worth a trip for the family and a great drive home, still with plenty of change in the pocket.
As others have said 10% is a big margin to play with. Im in the market at the moment and I don't think I would expect anyone to drop their asking price by 10% in a $40k+ car. Maybe others have the same mindset as me and think your $43990 price may only go down to say $43,000. If your happy to take $40,000 for it then I would be advertising it for the $39,990 and be tough with your negotiation, as least with a competitive asking price you should have plenty of people to negotiate with!
The $40,000 price range is also a tough market- im considering very low km SSV's, Brand new SS series 2 and VE HSV's- so you may not only be competing against other HSV's Clubsports at your price.
Goodluck!
Also list it for sale here on the forum- like me im sure there would be potential buyers around that would prefer to buy from a private sale at a fair price than see it get traded and then pay through the nose for it at a dealer!

Can't list on the forums as I don't have the post count :(
As far as the final price goes at this point I'd be looking at $40.5k - $41k as the absolute minimum.
But as time passes, things change, so who knows what will end up happening.

Its strange to see the VE Clubbies owners wondering why their cars wont fetch the 40+k asking price. Lets face it they can be upto 5 years old now and based on previous models at that age mid 30's is in the park. All because the shape is the same as current it doesnt really make to much difference.I paid 34k for my VYII R8 when it was 4 yrs old with 28k on it and perfect inside and out. Whats the problem really? I know we all want a zillion for our cars but it just not the case especially when there are 4 trillion VE HSV's to choose from and in my books based on that along im surprised they arent flat30k. :1peek:
and in my books based on that along im surprised they arent flat30k. :1peek:
If my car was worth flat 30k 3 yrs and 2 months after purchase, I would never ever buy or recommend that manufacturer to anyone.
$72k on road when new - $30k after 3 yrs... Come on, seriously?
Thats a 41% resale. with that in mind, same year VE SS should be selling for $17k and we should be able to get Barinas for free...
All I asked was what people's experiences were...

$30k might be a bit low but I agree with what Thorpey is saying. I bought my VY for $28,000 when it was 3 years old but it had 100,000kms on it, bought my VZ R8 for $36,000 when it was 3 years old with 50,000kms on it. Bought my 3 year old VE for $41,000. The VE has definately held its value better than previoius models but they are advertised the same price as they were 12 months ago.
I think you'll be extremely lucky if you get over $40,000 though but I think it will be most likely that soon you'll wish you just took the trade in of $37,000. That's a very good trade in price.
Thorpey

Not having a go mate. Fact is resale is gay. That's the reason I have only ever bought one brand new HSV. Never again I'm sorry to say. What I'm saying is be happy that you may be able to get 40 if ur lucky but based on previous models I'm surprised u don't get 30. Remember 2007 was 4 years ago.
So what you guys are saying is that these cars are worth less than what Redbook has them listed for?
* Private Price Guide $39,200 - $43,300
* Trade In Price Guide $31,900 - $36,000
* Average Km 60,000 - 100,000
Shit, if I knew that 3yrs ago, I wouldn't have bought this car in the first place.
Remember 2007 was 4 years ago.
The car is November 2007 compliance, so it only ran out of warrant 2 months ago, thus making it just over 3yrs old, rather than 4.
But yeah, I get your point... Most ppl will just subtract 11-7 = 4 years :goodjob:
I'm just going by what Redbook says:
* Private Price Guide $39,200 - $43,300
* Trade In Price Guide $31,900 - $36,000
* Average Km 60,000 - 100,000
I do agree with you, never again another new HSV, or any holden for that matter.

dude, you need to listen to what people are saying, they are trying to help you out not bag you. you want the feedback, but don't want to listen to the truth. if you've had nothing at all you are not doing it right and i will bet you won't get any interest at all.
it is a buyers market unfortunately. best way to sell it is to put it at a selling price, which to me would be $39500, as others have said. the fact is it is 4 years old and out of warranty. there are heaps of other cars to choose from at that price.
good luck with sale. also, don't be lazy and accept $37k from dealer.

Problem is, he doesn't want to listen to commonsense and the undertones of this thread simply amount to an advertisement - when the bloke hasn't contributed enough to this forum to be able to post a classified ad.
