I'm looking for some info in regards to my rough gear changes in my vy ss auto. When taking off normally from first to second it holds in the gear for too long and jerks forward when it changes. From second to third it makes a slight clunk noise when it changes. Any info you guys can give me on this would be much appreciated. I have not had the car long and I'm just wondering if this is a problem I should be worried about? Cheers

i think it could be common? my vx does similar with first (holds gear a bit, then jerks forward into second)... don't have any other issues apart from that though.

Hi BIDZR,

I used to use Nulon gearbox additive in my VP 4 speed auto. I understand that it helps moving parts to slide up and down and open and shut more smoothly. It also helps to stop oil drips.

Contact Nulon and ask if they make an additive that is safe in your gearbox.

Has the auto been tricked up by a previous owner to firm up its shifts?

My auto does the EXACT same thing. Has the car been MAF or MAFless tuned? The tuner will usually tweak the way the auto behaves, firm up the shifts so this may be the cause.

I actually had my car in at a driveline specialist yesterday to find the cause of the 2nd-3rd change noise as I thought it was backlash in the driveline somewhere. They had a good look over it and couldnt find anything. Next stop will be taking it to an auto specialist to see if its related to the shift kit (boost valve) I put in.

But to answer your question, I dont think its anything to worry about its just a bit annoying

Thanks guys.

Aus07: Do you get the clunking from 2nd to 3rd as well?

Pah: I will give them a call and see what they say. No the car is completely standard no work done at all, I knew the previous owner.

Aratic: The car has not been tuned at all. I was also thinking about taking it in to a transmission specialist, I dont think it should be like this if no work has been done? Can you please let me know what they say if you do take it in?

bidzr - I don't get any clunks from 2nd-3rd. before I got the car tuned it didn't shift too well though. Now it's just a firm shift from 1st-2nd and that's it.

any idea when the auto was last serviced, sounds like what my VS did before the suto crapped itself. Held gears too long and eventually lost 2/4th and then wouldnt change out of 1st.

This doesnt sound to promising. Umm I'm not sure when the auto was last serviced. Sounds like I should just take it in to get checked anyway.

Have you checked the fluid in the auto?? I've heard the auto's like a little extra fluid in there for them to behave nicely.
You can also have the auto adjusted via the tune in order to smooth the shifting between gears - if needed.

Yeh I checked all fluids yesterday and all were good. I might enquire about the auto adjustment when I go in for a tune...if it hasnt been properly fixed up by then. It might just be something minor but its very annoying when I'm driving in traffic etc

Hey guys
Just thought I would post an update on this thread. I got the car checked out by a couple of tramission guys and they were happy enough with the gear changes and so was I after confirmation that nothing was wrong. Now recently I had a mafless tune done and it seems to have made the matter worse, first gear holds for far too long (in my opinion) and the change to second is quite rough (jerk forward). When I take off slowly it seems to change from first to second nicely enough but when I give it a bit it really holds in first gear and changes to second more roughly than before. I unserstand they stuff around with the shift point whilst doing a tune, should I be taking it back to my tuner and saying I'm not happy with the shift? I would really like to compare it to a similar car but dont know anyone with a VY SS auto. Any info/experiences on the subject would be much appreciated.
Cheers

The clutches wear differently due to different driving patterns, so it would be best to go back to the tuner and adjust the shift to your liking

Mine does exactly the same thing, Now i've got another issue also. P0756 - 2-3 solenoid stuck open.
Its certainly not a nice ride when its doing this. Anyone who thinks its normal needs their head read.

Thanks guys! Soopy - was yours like that before a tune and worse after or was it always like this? Will definitely be taking it back to the tuner and getting it adjusted. Also considering I just got it tuned will it cost me to get the shifts adjusted? Cheers

If you are having problems holding on to first gear too long and rough gear changes, it's likely to be a TPS issue.

My car has done it ever since I bought it.

How can you diagnose a TPS issue?
On the scan tool it seems to be accurate.
