03 VY SS, had the car for 5 days, and its developed a whine (no not from the passengers seat, I am separated LOL) After doing some searchs I thought it might be the idler pulley.

Anyways in the last 2 days I have been using the stereo, which I had barely even switched on since getting it, and whenever I have the stereo on at night, it cuts out, a stereo sign comes up on the dash that looks like a radio tower with interference around it, and also all the gauges drop to 0, and then when it comes back on the gauges come back. And it does this every couple of minutes.

Also my power window switches have backlights on them, even when the car is turned off and key removed and doors opened and I can operate the power windows in this state?!?!

So now I am thinking the whine might be an alternator bearing or something related to the alternator with this problem. The whine is there whether the car is idling or driving

Any help/ideas would be great, the car is still under a 3month stat warranty so hopefully I can get it fixed...

The power window buttons will remain illuminated and operable for about 30 seconds I think it is, or until you lock the car. That is how they are designed. Check whether they remain illuminated after locking the car, or leave a window down, lock the car, then reach in and see if they will work. They shouldn't now.
If the power for the stereo and dash goes off only at night I'd be looking at maybe a dodgy globe or socket in the car. Check to see if it's only when you press the brake pedal? Crap globes cause all sorts of wierd issues.

Had a very similar problem... Intermittent stereo On & OFF / Instrument panel gauges all dropping to zero &
and back-lighting on the Instrument - Stereo & Climate Control panels going off.

You may see the problem most frequently when car is cold (within first 10 minutes) or when you are pulling a full load (all the lights on - A/C on + blower
going at full speed - Stereo On + Rear Demister. You may also find it related to hard acceleration & hard braking.

If that sounds like it - It's usually an earthing problem...
and the main earths on the engine block and on firewall near the ABS mount.

Make sure you look at the ground points on the firewall behind the battery -that's the main earth
for the entire front body harness..
You may have to take the plug completely apart to clean all the pins...

If that doesn't fix the problem the next most likely cause is the Alternator (or its Earths).

Cracking and re-tightening the bolts that hold the alternator in position can sometimes fix the problem.

In my LS1 - VZ I took the alternator out - blew the carbon dust out - put it back in - no problems since.
