My wagon was driven til it ran out of juice today.

Is there anything i need to do to it now to ensure no damage has/will be done as a result?

Are the in tank and in line filters enough to stop any crud getting through? It is a march 2010 build, done 17xxx kms so i am hoping the tank didn't have too much crap in the bottom of it.

Tank has since been refuelled and no obvious issues.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hos

You should be fine just to put fuel in it I have done that a couple times as well. Just put fuel in let it prime then away you go.

You will be fine.
The sludge in the bottom of the tank thing shouldn't be a problem, the dirt wont settle to the bottom i wouldn't think given its being shaken around while the car is on the road.

You should be fine mate, unless there was crap in the tank but if it has started and drives ok then it should be ok. It doesn't take long for rubbish in the fuel to find the pump & injectors so it would be fairly obvious if there were any long lasting effects.

If you were pulling 7000 rpm under heavy load when it ran out then that might be a different story and fuel pump damage would be the least of your concerns :(

It is always best practice to refill your tank when it gets to about 10 litres of fuel and don't run out ever, simple. Not only will it prevent crap from the tank being picked up, but also saves your fuel pump from overheating as they are designed to run in fuel which cools and keeps the pump at operating temperature.

Whilst on this subject, if there is a tanker dumping fuel at the servo, go to the next one to fill up. The 20,000 litres being pumped in make a nice smoothy with the crap in the 30 year old tanks which can take hours to settle back down. This is also why you should keep the fuel dockets from your current tankfull and the one before. This can save you $1000's in repair bills that without a docket, makes it very hard to convince the already less interested console operator that you have a legitimate claim.........

Sorry for the rant... again :1peek:

Damn some old wives tales die hard....

The Pickup is at the lowest part of the tank so ios ALWAYS sucking from where all this magic crap is.....

This dates back to when fuel tanks were made from plain mild steel and if let run low would rust, then the rust/scale would end up in the tank and if run dry the crap would block the pickup or find it's way into the primative carburettor blocking the tiny orifices causing problems..

Modern cars run plastic fuel tanks.

Before that tanks were galvanised.

EFI Filters are pretty good at catching any contaminents other than Water which will cause issues but a litre of Metho will bond with the water and carry it through the fuel system.

Yes pickup is at almost the lowest point of the tank but not quite there will be about 5 ltr of fuel it won't pickup :):)

I dropped my oct 08 utes tank to install a duel pump for e85 and was surprised at the grit in the tank at only 11000km's at that stage, reminds me should do the fuel filter:1peek:

i had about 2 litres in mine when i dropped the tank, one ting atleast the VY gives you a reading the VE just says low or very low and very low means F all trust me ran out

Cheers guys. I don't normally let it get below 1/8th of a tank. Mrs had been driving it the last few days, said she didn't notice the two low fuel warnings come up........ Til it stopped in the middle of the road.

Took it for a drive tonight, no obvious issues thankfully.

I must have a good one, the Very Low warning came on as we were heading down the Calder Freeway and we managed to do 23kms until we got to the BP at Calder Park. I was sweating it for a while! Talk about an economy run!

I don't understand either how people run out of fuel however in saying that I did run out in the old VS ute but the needle was stuck on 1/4 fuel. Didn't occur to me the tank seemed to be lasting forever
