Standard replacement fluids are Dexron III ATF in gearbox and 80W140 GL5 gear oil with Sturraco 8098 additive in the diff, although most use Castrol SAF-XA which has the additive included

Being an angry VY, I suggest that you don't put in any diff oil with the diff chatter additive. It is not a good thing to have in any performance vehicle as it severly reduces the performance and reliability of your LSD. Have you fitted an aftermarket diff centre?

If you're producing over 300 fwkw then you should go for something more protective for your T56 and diff.
The Mainlube 154 series of Synthetic Solid Boundary E P gear Oils have proven many times to be superior to anything else on the market.
Hoe much oil a diff hold .... fark all, what's a diff worth .... Heaps

I visited Mal Wood last year. He rebuilt my Tremec 6060 to make it less clattery.
Before I sold my VY, I'd accepted advice from a workshop to fill the T56 with other than the Holden specified auto transmission fluid. I'm not sure. It may have been gearbox oil? I hope not.
If my memory is correct, I think Mal Wood suggested that gear oil in T56's stuffs the synchros. I guess I could check on that point. EP - does that mean it's a gear oil not a transmission fluid?
PAH
PS: If you by an XR6T, buy the 6 speed auto NOT the manual. Mal did a good job smoothing out my gearbox and diff clunks but I doubt it's as refined as a ZF auto. A torque convertor no doubt hids a multitude of transmission clunks.

A proper gear oil is an E P gear Oil, E P (extreme pressure) the chemical make up of E P gear oil when activated with extreme pressure releases and oxidising chemical the forms a light layer of oxidised metal over the gears (the smelly shit when you remove the diff backing plate (means the E P has been activated)
It's this chemical the T56 has a problem with, it dissolves the bonding glue the holds the syncros to the bulk ring. This is what Mal Woods is talking about. Most E P Gear oils have this problem with the T56.
Mainlube E P Gear oil has no reaction to the bonding therefore is safe for use in the T56.
Cheers
Steve
